Dear Parents/Guardians:

The USD 345 School District is excited to announce an update to our online student registration/data validation system for the upcoming school year, powered by InfoSnap. The system is a secure and green process, which allows the district to verify all student demographic, emergency, and medical information for your child prior to the start of the new school year. The system will also allow you to electronically sign the annual permission forms for school district policies. Prior to online enrollment, which will be open beginning July 11, you will receive a letter/email from the USD 345 School District with instructions on how to access the system for your student. The email will contain a link/instructions and a secure “snapcode” that links directly to your student’s information. The primary custodial parent will create an account that will be used each year for this process and will then submit a form for each student in your family. To make the process easier for families with multiple students, you will have the option to copy all generic family information to all other students in your family. We would appreciate all families to take action and complete these forms as soon as possible after receiving the letter/email. Your student’s registration will not be complete until the forms have been submitted. Families that complete online registration do not need to attend the District Registration Day on August 4 at Seaman High School. If you do not have access to the Internet or have any further questions, please contact the Seaman Technology Department at 286-8483.

SEAMAN VIKING MARCHING BAND CAMP Mon., August 1 – Thu., August 11, 2016

8:00 a.m. – 12 Noon

August 1: Band Room (Staff, Leadership, Perc., Guard, Drill Team only) August 2: Band Room (Add All new students and 9th graders) August 3, 4, 5: Band Room (Full Marching Band) August 8, 9, 10, 11: Band Room (Full Band) August 11th at 6:00 p.m.: Cookout with family & friends in SHS commons, followed by hand-book information in Auditorium and marching exhibition in stadium (approx.7:30) *start of cookie dough fundraiser CAMP INFO Marching camp is held to get a head start on marching fundamentals, pre-game and half-time show prep, and for the band members to become familiar with each other in a band of about 220 members. It is imperative that all members are present every day of camp! When just one student is missing, it creates an empty spot on the field and becomes difficult for other students to learn movements, not to mention the missing student will be forced to catch up. Each student will be taught over 20 moves on the field and learn more than 10 songs in just 6-8 days of camp! If a student is unable to attend camp for any reason, then it is requested that a parent e-mail Mr. Stahly ([email protected]) as soon as possible so other practice arrangements can be made for the band during the student’s absence. Yes, it’s that important. WHAT TO BRING Instrument, music and marching folder. If the student’s instrument is one that is rented from the school, please make arrangements with Mr. Dease to get the instrument during the summer or exchange the SMS instrument at the beginning of camp. It will be very warm weather, so please wear appropriate clothing, bring a water bottle and wear tennis shoes! A white practice band shirt and insurance will be included in the camp fee of $30 due the first day you are at camp. This cannot be paid from a student's Band Account. MARCHING MUSIC Each student will be provided his/her own marching folder before the end of the current school year and should begin working on playing the music. It is important to get the cobwebs out and be able to play most of the music prior to the first day of camp. Please note that it is expected that students will have all pre-game and half-time music memorized for the first football game. Don’t worry about memorization over the summer, just be sure to practice! A Message From the Principal

Seaman Freshman CenterNewsletter

June 2016 Mrs. Shelly Prengel, Principal

4850 NW Rochester Rd.

Topeka, KS 66617 June 2016(785) 286-8300

www.seamanschools.org/shs

The 2015-16 school year was a memorable one with a great group of freshmen! I heard from teachers the last few days of school how they enjoyed this group, and I can attest to that as well. I hope the Freshman Center helped ease the transition from middle school to high school and that students are now ready to

take on their last three years of high school. In their Success 101 class this year they created a 10-year plan, which they will continue to visit and tweak as necessary throughout high school. Hopefully, they will continue to set goals each year and strive to reach their potential.

Just a reminder that students wanting to make any changes to their schedule need to do so at the time indicated by the counseling department. For sophomores (2016-17), this is Friday, May 27, 8:30am-4:00pm. Students can come in AFTER this time as well, or they can call/email their counselor.

Finally, if you are the parent of an incoming freshman reading this, I invite you to consider being part of our site council starting in the fall. If interested, please call the school at 286-8300.

To all Viking families, have a safe and wonderful summer!

2016-2017 Site CouncilIf you will have a student at the SFC next year and would be interested in being on the Freshman Center Site Council,

please contact Mrs. Prengel.

Success 101 students give back Success 101 is a required class for all freshman students.

This semester-long class is designed to help students foster academic success in their high school careers, and to aid in reaching life goals set by the individual student.

One important component of Success 101 are volunteer service hours. All students must complete 10 hours of service for any non-profit organization. This accounts for 15% of their final grade in the class. Many students volunteer at schools, churches, and other community organizations.

Success 101 teacher Daniel Ruda said, “Many of our students were already serving in their community, so we decided to start keeping track so that we could showcase the awesome things they were doing.”

At the end of the year, students complete a presentation reflecting on their experiences during the completion of their hours.

Mason Hartter (Left) and Jaiden Anderson (Right) take a break from serving dinner for Silverbackks SilverSuppers at Garfield Community Center. Supper is served to school-age children Monday through Thursday. If you would like to sign up to volunteer, please visit http://silverbackks.ivolunteer.com/.
