Pearland Theatre Guild presents“A RAISIN IN THE SUN”
by Lorraine Hansberry
A Raisin in the Sun was the first play written by a black woman, Lorraine Hansberry, to be produced on Broadway. Raisin was named the best play of 1959 by the New York Drama Critics Circle and is considered one of the great American plays of the 20th Century. They play is a moving portrayal of an African-American family on Chicago’s south side as their competing dreams collide, break apart and begin anew. A Raisin in the Sun features themes that are as relevant and universal today as they were 50 years ago.

PLAY DETAILSet on Chicago’s South Side, A Raisin in the Sun tells the story
of divergent dreams and conflicts within three generations of the Younger family: son Walter Lee, his wife Ruth, his sister Beneatha, his son Travis and matriarch Lena. With her deceased husband’s insurance money, Mama Lena dreams of moving to a new home and a better neighborhood. Walter Lee, a chauffeur, wants to buy a liquor store and be his own man. Beneatha dreams of medical school. The tensions and prejudice they face form this seminal American drama. Sacrifice, trust and love among the Younger family and their heroic struggle to retain dignity in a harsh and changing world is a searing and timeless document of hope and inspiration.
