Admission and Financial Aid Tips• Starting early is key! This ensures that all paperwork and financial aid are in place in time for
registration. You can be admitted in advance.• Complete an Application for Admission online or by submitting to any Student Affairs location.• Provide appropriate identification documents to validate citizenship.• Request transcripts/GED scores from all schools previously attended. • Ensure that the Admissions and Financial Aid offices have your most current mailing address.• Check your College e-mail regularly for important announcements.• Sign and return Admission Agreement, indicating admission status, and provide any other
requested documents. • File early for financial aid! You may apply for federal assistance online by completing the
Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) at www.fafsa.ed.gov. The College financial aid code is 001018.
• Check the College Web site at www.wallace.edu for scholarship information. • Respond promptly to all correspondence from the Financial Aid Office. Do not wait until
registration to finalize your financial aid. It should be complete before you register for classes.
• Take your placement exam prior to registration.• Attend scheduled Student Orientation, Advising, and Registration (SOAR) session; meet with
your advisor and register for classes.• Pay tuition by appropriate deadline.
Placement and Challenge Exam ProceduresAccording to Alabama State Board of Education Policy 802.1, students may challenge English,math, and/or reading ASSET®/COMPASS™ placement scores by retesting one time only if firstscores are unsatisfactory. A fee of $8 is charged to retake COMPASS™.
A CIS 146 challenge exam is also available. Contact Mr. David Cruz-Wells via email [email protected] (preferred) or 1-800-543-2426 (Ext. 2255). No more than 10 applicants pertest are allowed for this challenge exam. Students should be on time. No one will be tested after15 minutes into the test. Contact Mr. Cruz-Wells 24 hours prior to testing to allow time forscheduling and resource allocation.
The Alabama Community College System Biology Placement Exam is available for students whodesire to exempt BIO 103, which is the prerequisite for BIO 201—Anatomy and Physiology I andBIO 220—General Microbiology. A fee of $26.25 is required at registration, prior to biologyplacement testing. Students may not retest.
Payment forms must be processed in the Business Office or appropriate designated office on eachcampus. Students must bring a receipt and a federal or state photo identification to the Test Center. Technology-Based InstructionInformation About Online and Hybrid Classes
Wallace Community College uses Blackboard® to support its online instructional programs. This technology providesstudents with an opportunity to pursue courses in formats that meet all course requirements while reducing in-classtime. Faculty members are able to post course syllabi, contact information, and course content and ensure thatstudents are aware of online activities that require participation, such as communicating with the instructor andother students, completing online assignments and quizzes, and posting course grades. Students must be aware ofthe requirements for each course in which they are enrolled.
Online and Hybrid Courses with On-Campus LabsThe Internet is used to deliver instruction in the following courses:
• Online courses are delivered over the Internet using Blackboard®. Students will be given the option of completing exams on campus with their instructor or use an approved off campus proctor. It will be the student’s responsibility to meet all requirements if the off campus proctor option is chosen.
• Hybrid courses with on-campus meetings meet online for a portion of the course meetings. Students are required to attend scheduled on-campus sessions at the designated campus.
• Online and hybrid courses require use of the Blackboard® system. Students can access the Blackboard®
system at courses.wallace.edu.
Requirements and Assistance for Online and Hybrid Courses• Students desiring to take online courses MUST complete eLearning Training prior to registering for those
courses.• Students should contact the Center for Instructional Excellence if they do not have access to eLearning
Training in their Blackboard® course list. The Center for Instructional Excellence can be reached at...CAS 137 on the Wallace [email protected]
Information on computer requirements, accessing the Blackboard® system, and directions for completing theeLearning Training session can be found at the College distance education home page athttp://wallace.edu/programs/distance_ed.
Wallace Community College offers many classes that reduce the amount of time students must physically be on campus.These online and hybrid classes are indicated by “N” or “H” in the section number. Students taking online classes are notrequired to attend weekly meetings but are required to attend schduled on campus exams or receive approval for using anoff campus protor. If the off campus exam proctor option is chosen it is the student’s responsibility to complete all requiredapprovals well in advance of the exam date. Hybrid classes require students to attend weekly on-campus meetingsthroughout the semester. Wallace Community College does not offer classes that are entirely online.
Students interested in taking online or hybrid classes should carefully consider their learning styles. These classes requirestudents to be self-motivated and able to complete assignments with minimal supervision. Students should also possessstrong computer skills. The eLearning training will help ensure that students are ready for online courses. The eLearningtraining is highly recommended for all students, even those not taking online courses.

An eligible student can receive the Federal Pell Grantuntil the earliest of a bachelors degree or until thestudent has received the Federal Pell Grant for anequivalent of 12 full-time semesters. Financial Aid ChangesPell Grant Lifetime Eligibility Notice
The U.S. Department of Education recently established new regulations which reduce the duration of a student’s
lifetime eligibility to receive Pell Grant from 18 full-time semesters (or its equivalent) to 12 full-time semesters
(or its equivalent). This provision applies to all Federal Pell Grant eligible students effective 2012-13.

• Step 5: View the Financial Aid Review screenlisting your total Lifetime Eligibility Used. If thisamount equals 600% or more, you have noremaining eligibility for Pell Grant.
• Step 6: Be sure to LOG OFF when your reviewis complete.
Ability to Benefit
Students who do not have a high school diploma or arecognized equivalent (GED), or do not meet thehome school requirements, and who first enroll in aprogram of study on or after July 1, 2012, will not beeligible to receive Title IV student aid.
New Verification Requirements
The U.S. Department of Education has instituted somechanges to the verification process for the 2012-13award year. According to the U.S. Department ofEducation Dear Colleague Letter GEN 11-03:
Since most applicants can quickly and easily access
IRS data through the FAFSA-IRS Data Retrieval
process, we no longer consider it reasonable for an
institution to accept anything less reliable than IRS-
supplied evidence for verification of income data.
Therefore, if an applicant selected for verification has
not successfully transferred information from the IRS,
or transferred the information but then changed it, the
Department will expect the institution to require the
applicant, and if necessary the applicant’s parents, to
provide an official IRS transcript of their Federal
income tax information..
What This Means
Students and parents can no longer submit a signedcopy of their Federal tax returns as a means ofconfirming the income reported on the FAFSA. Whencompleting the income sections of the FAFSA, theapplicant is given the option to have this data retrieveddirectly from the IRS at the time of FAFSACompletion.
If applicants decide not to use the IRS data retrievalprocess and the application is selected for verification,
the applicant and the parents will be required tosubmit an IRS Tax Transcript.
If the IRS tax retrieved information is changed on theFAFSA, the applicant will be required to submit anIRS Tax Transcript.
However, the IRS data can be retrieved by theapplicant when a correction is made to the FAFSA. Ifthe retrieved data is not changed, then an IRS TaxTranscript will not be required.
Tax Filers with Special Circumstances
The IRS Tax Retrieval may not be available for theapplicant in the following circumstances:
• A joint tax return was filed for 2011 and thestudent or the student’s parents have filed theFAFSA with a marital status of separated,divorced, or widowed.
• If the tax filer is married to someone other thanthe individual included on the 2011 joint taxreturn.
• If the parent or student was not married in2011 but is married at the time the FAFSA isfiled. The current spouse’s income must bereported on the FAFSA.
• If the parents or the student is married but filedtax returns separately.
• If an amended tax return was filed.
Requesting an IRS Tax Transcript
This can be done free of charge from the IRS one ofthree ways.
Online Request
• Available on the IRS website at www.irs.gov.• In the Tools section of the homepage click
“Order a Return or Account Transcript.”• Enter the tax filer’s social security number,
date of birth, street address, and zip or postalcode. Use the address currently on file withthe IRS. Generally, this will be the addressthat was listed on the latest tax return filed.

• In the Type of Transcript field, select “TaxReturn Transcript” and in the Tax Year field,select “2011.”
• If successfully validated, tax filers can expectto receive a paper IRS tax return transcript atthe address included in their online request,within 5 to 10 days from the time the onlinerequest was successfully transmitted to theIRS.

• If the address has recently changed, includethe address listed on the latest tax return filedon Line 4.
• The tax filers (or spouse if requestinginformation from a joint tax return) must signand date the form and enter their telephonenumber. Only one signature is required torequest a transcript for a joint return.
• Mail or fax the completed IRS Form 4506T-EZto the appropriate address (or FAX number)provided on page 2 of Form 4506T-EZ.
• Tax filers can expect to receive their transcript

Qualifying Income for Automatic Zero EFC Reduced
Qualifying income for the Automatic Zero EFCdetermination has been reduced to $23,000 from thecurrent $30,000 beginning with award year 2012-13.Auto-zero applies only to EFC calculations fordependent students (based on parent income) andindependent students with dependents other than aspouse (based on the combined income of the studentand spouse).
