Despite their riders being rusty and lacking vital match practice, Peterborough produced a sparkling performance to open their campaign on a high note in front of a large opening night crowd. The Alwalton side dominated the action, always having their noses in front although Mildenhall pushed them hard especially Richard Knight who lives locally and reeled off three wins after a first race engine failure. Panthers newcomer Ashley Pullen stole the show brilliantly scoring 11 points on his debut to take the man of the match award. Pullen, though received plenty of support with Dave Allen and skipper Mick Hines also enjoying fine starts to the season. Kevin Brown - Speedway Star

The Easter Triangle is rapidlly becoming the Bermuda Triangle of the National League. Every year three teams turn up at West Row and one of them invaribly loses a rider. This time it was the FSO Tigers' turn as Carl Baldwin slammed into the safety fence so hard that he knocked a hole in it. He was taken to hosipital with a suspected broken ankle but fortunately got away with a sprain and bad bruising which may keep him out of action for a couple of weeks. The other top Tigers responded well to the extra responsibility, dropping only two points between them and got good backing from the up-and-coming Carl Blackbird. Randall Butt - Speedway Star

Throughout the final leg of the Easter Triangle only a handful of points seperated Rye House and Mildenhall but with Peterborough not producing the points, overall victory for the Fen Tigers was always on the cards. A number of good individual efforts from various riders secured vital points but, in general, team riding was scarce. The last three heats saw a cloudburst over the HoddesdonRaceway and the last heat decider turned into misfortune for Mildenhall when Robert Henry's over zealous riding landed him on the track to give the Rockets four points and the consolation of victory on their own track. Victory for Rye House was certain but a complete whitewash was prevented by impressive riding from a trio of visiting Invaders.In the final anaylsis the hosts showed an evenly balanced scorechart headed by Peter Johns with paid 14 points but just as worthy was the paid six scored by Andrew Silver who made an impressive NL debut.

Rye House were never allowed to establish a strong lead as the evenly balanced Scunthorpe team soon became masters of the vital starting technique but it was the superior knowledge f their own circuit which won the Rockets their points.Apart from Nigel Crabtree, top scorer for Scunthorpe, credit is due to Mark DeKok who made five faultless starts but could not maintain his lead for four laps.The Rockets trio of Marvyn Cox, Bob Garrad and Peter Johns lacked solid support and after three falls in his first four races Steve Naylor gave Julian Parr a thrilling race for second posiiton in the vital Heat 15 and took him on the final bend only to lose it again in the race for the flag.

Monarchs could have been in big trouble here. They were just four points aheadafter eight heats.But once the track had dried out and lost some depth they got it partially together and managed to make their home league match a winner, despite the persistent attentions of the night's top man Garrad.Only Trownson managed to beat him (in the first race and the placings were reversed in the last), and the Rye House skipper went on to supplement his 17 ppoints with an authoritative victory over Fiora to walk away with the Silver Helmet.Everbody warmed to wee Andrew Silver who didn't score in three starts but there was a certain charisma about his youthful abandon.Johns, three of four times the rider he was when he last rode Powderhall, was something of a revelation in a side acknowledged as a bogey lot for Monarchs. "We're glad to get them out of the way". commented Tom Cook.

Have you ever been to a speedway match where the result was announced as a draw, both teams assembled together for a shared lap of honour and then discovered a few minutes later the home side had lost?A seventh ride for Long Eaton reserve John Frankland in Heat 15 was correctly if belatedly adjudicated to be illegal, his third place point was awarded to fourth place finisher Marvyn Cox who had pottered around on a sick motor and Rye House had won 49-47.With Lng Eaton still without Paul Stead, Tony Featherstone now also out injured and Nicky Allott back but far from fit, a draw would not have been undeserved for the Invaders, particularly the gallent efforts of Frankland and Mark Stevenson. Additionally Dave Perks was handicapped mechanically, borrowing three bikes.On the other hand falls and machine trouble cost Rye House an almost certain four points in the early stages and outstanding maximum man Bob Garrad, the impressive Cox plus potential packed Andrew Silver could claim they had contributed enough to warrant a Rockets victory.

With only two riders able to match the home side, Rye House were clearly never in with a chance but Bobby Garrad and Marvyn Cox, who appeared in 14 heats between them, made racing interesting despite the track being once again affected by rain during the afternoon.Glasgow were solid with Kenney Mckinna a maximum man on his last appearance as a Tiger with fellow heat-leaders McMillan and Lawson backing him well and there were several interesting individual races to watch, not least Colin Caffrey's fight to peg Cox back into third place in Heat 10 and the sterling efforts of Steve Bryenton in the last three heats.

After a delayed start, track conditions deteriorated but the riders' enthusiasm was not competely lost.Dave Allen excelled for Peterborough with spectcular fence-scraping rides and full credit must go to Rockets' Kevin Bowen for his superb efforts.No effort, however was made by visitors Mick Spinks and ex-Rocket Ashley Pullen who decided to quit the meeting after Heat 4. Their action caused despair for the visiting supporters and prompted a £20 fine and a report to the SCB.

Canterbury proved convincing winners over Rye House in a match in which fortunes fluctuated on a track which seemed to cause problems for most riders. Indeed, the visitors lost services of both reserves in Heat 2 and Naylor later in the match.Silver suffered a broken leg, Bowen concussion and Naylor a severe leg leg injury.Rockets' Cox was undoubted star winning his races by comfortable distances. He was beaten only once, surprisingly by Luckhurst. However, he received scant support other than from Naylor before his injury.

Oxford held the Rockets to a mere six points advantage in this first leg match of their KO Cup with a determined, evenly balanced side.Rye House, however, were forced to rely on their top four men which included Steve Bryenton whose paid maximum was well deserved.In each of his outings he rose to the occasion and produced five excellent rides with full control on the outside of the circuit.The replacements for injured Peter Johns and Andrew Silver were Gary Monk and new signing Terry Broadbank but they failed to give the necessary backing and the Rockets are left under three weeks to improve their lower order for the second leg.

This meeting proved that even a challenge event can produce fine racing and Rye House never intended to be easy prey for the Hawks.Rockets Bob Garrad maintained a solid attack but the visitors trio of John Titman, Jens Rasmussen and Finn Thomsen proved to be too strong.Steve Naylor had a spasmodic afternoon but produced an excellent race in Heat 13 only to be robbed of victory by a close decision at the chequered flag. The following race saw a double tactical substitute for the Rockets but time ws running out and Hackney produced their expected vicctory.

The return to Rye House was not a happy one for Kelvin Mullarkey because after scoring only four points from three rides his last tow outings produced falls while attempting spectacular overtaking.Barney Kennett didn't gain the respect of the Rye House fans when he sent Steve Bryenton into the safety fence during a closely fought Heat 12.Bryenton had ridden excellently throughout the afternoon but just missed the paid maximum when beaten by Keith Pritchard two races later.Fit again Peter Johns returned and his wide riding secured a useful paid seven points.

Thrills and spills in the sunshine at the Hoddesdon raceway but the Rockets were not elated with their victory. An unfortunate tumble for Kevin Bowen in Heat 5 with Rob Grant saw Bowen stretchered off and taken to hospital with both shoulders dislocated.After five drawn races, Peter Johns, who made determined efforts all afternoon, led the Rockets to a 5-1 victory and from then on Rye House dominated the match.Berwick fought bravely and made full use of tactical substitutes with full credit to Steve McDermott and Grant who fought hard for every point.

Panthers opened their fours campaign in devastating style with a tremendous first leg display which boosted their hopes of qualifying for next month's Alwalton-staged finals. The home side were consistent throughout, managing a string of wins and second placings. In fact the only occasion they failed to score was when acting skipper Dave Allen suffered engine failure in Heat 5. Mildenhall gave Panthers a good run for their money but even they were overpowered in the closing stages as home stars Andy Buck and Ian Barney reeled off breathtaking wins in races 15 and 16 respectively. Rye House started disastrously - they failed to score from the first four races and lost Peter Johns after a heavy Heat 3 tumble - but they staged a spirted recovery to give themselves a chance. A closely fought battle developed between Rye House and Crayford for victory in this second leg match but Peterborough had established such a strong lead from the first leg that they couldn't be caught overall. Crayford gained the lead in Heat 4 and held on to win an exciting and keenly contested third leg; only seven points seperated the four sides at the finish. Thomas featured in several exciting tussles and recorded the fastest time of the season in Heat 5. Teager proved a splendid reserve until a spectacular Heat 15 crash in which the three other riders all laid down their machines in expeert fashion. Mildenhall, despite the loss of Knight's contribution following a heavy first ride fall, displayed their formidable expertise with Henry notching a couple of fine wins from reserve including his now customary defeat of Thomas. Harrison distinguished himself with his efforts from the back to win Heat 6. Rye House failed to present their expected challenge. Cox managed three excellent wins including a superb last bend to win Heat 8. Garrad after two opening wins faded whilst Naylor, on his former track, fell in his first two outings. The FSO Tigers turned this finely posed National Fours decider into a massacre as they romped away to win 11 of the 16 heats. Maximum man Richard Knight on his new Italian GM machine, Derek Harrison top scorer thorughout the qualifying rounds, and Carl Baldwin were quite simply in a different class, and the real race was always for the second qualifying place. Crayford grabbed that even though Barry Thomas was strangely subdued. A large and enthusiastic crowd witnessed an entralling local derby that contained all the essential ingredients of superb racing, liberally laced with thrills and spills, spiced with moments of controversy.With six of the first seven races drawn Crayford forged a six-point lead with a 5-0 in Heat 8, after the impressive Gray experienced machine failure whilst in the lead. Tactical substitue Garrad and Naylor hit back with a 5-1 in the next race and the scores were levelled when Garrad won Heat 11 and the tenacious Gray split home duo after an epic scrap.The tide turned in Kestrel's favour when Mogridge and Banks stormed to a rousing 5-1 in Heat 14 and, int the following face, hitherto brilliant Cox fell.The duels between Cox and Thomas with honours even, Heats 10 and 12 produced speedway of the highest calibre. Thomas also features in a dazzling four lap chase to defeat the spirited Naylor in Heat 6, whilst Sage's victory over Garrad in the preceding race brought the house down.Despite an indifferent match Teager, with a brilliant first turn successfully retained the Silver Helmet against Garrad. The Kestrel increased his lead in each lap and surprisingly, ran out an easy winner.

What a cliffhanger his match turned out to be. The Rockets hit by injuries before the start soon had their problems added to when Steve Naylor fell in his first ride and took no further part.Cheetahs could have been forgivenfor thinking they were home and dry then but they didn't count on the brilliance of Marvyn Cox and Bob Garrad.Cox roared to a brilliant 18-point maximum and Garrad woudl have mustered the same had his engine not failed when he held a long lead in Heat 13. It cost Garrad his top payout and Rockets the points, but that's speedway.For Cheetahs Graham Drury continued in fine nick with 15 points and kevin Smart into the team proper, contributed well with 10 from five finishes, as the Cheetahs gained revenge for their KO Cup defeat last month.

Middlesbrough required only three maximum heat victories to clinch the league points in this thrilling match and Steve Wilcock was instrumental on all three occasions.Wilcock's first success was Heat 3 as Marvyn Cox suffered mechanical problems while leading. In search of revenge Cox gated well in Heat 13 but was taken by firm outside passes by Wilcock and Mike Spink.Spink and Wilcock were partners again in Heat 16 when Rye House only needed a draw heat for victory but the effervesent Kerry Gray upended Wilcock and in the rerun Bob Garrad's wheel came loose enabling the Tigers to secure the honours.

Milton Keynes made a disastrous start by scoring only one point from the first two heats but they capitalised on the Rockets' mechanical problems in Heat 4 and 5 to bring the deficitto just one point.After Heat 5, however, the Chiltern Radio Knights could not muster the strength to overcome the runaway Rockets and they managed only one heat advantage from the last 11 races.In securing a worthy maximum Bob Garrad broke his own track record and led the Rockets to a convincing victory over the former league leaders, who sadly missed injured Charlie Mckinna.

Although the Knights finally paraded their new signing Craig Pendlebury, they were made to fight for every point and it wasn't until the final heat, that the outcome was resolved in their favour.Their first heat lead was quickly reversed in Heat 2, and despite heat wins for Craig Pendlebury and Keith White, the Rockets were still leading by the halfway stage. The Knights finally regained the lead in Heat 9, when Terry Broadbank was excluded for falling, and Steve Naylor for an untortunate wheelie, that impeded Pendlebury, in the re-run, which led to Naylor quitting the match.Further heat wins from Keith White helped the Knights maintain a slender lead, before being joined by Featherby in the final heat, to hold out Bob Garrad, and collect the vital 5-1 win.

Martin Yeates emerged from a three-man run-off to take the 1983 Herts Gold Cup, denying Bob Garrad a hat-trick of successes. Marvyn Cox, after a uncompromsing first-turn tussle with Garrad, was unable to catch the flying Wilcat and snatch a home victory. Yeates and Garrad were undefeated after three rides, with Cox having dropped a point to Yeates, who in turn was pipped by Garrad in Heat 16. A Heat 18 victory for Yeates left Garrad to defeat Cox in Heat 19 for his hat-trick. Spink proved a real stumbling block and Garrad just snatched second behind Cox for force a run-off between the meeting's dominant men. Crayford's Bosley and Galvin were the pick of the rest in a meeting bedevilled by rain showers. In a match that provided much good racing the solid scoring Crayford side emerged victorious after trailing at the halfway stage. Kelvin Mullarkey was in fine fettle for Canterbury and dropped his only point to Sage. David Mullett had another excellent match and his nine points included a superb last bend overtake of Bob Garrad in Heat 6 and an epic scrap with Marvyn Cox in Heat 15. New signing Andy Hibbs had a quiet debut as he encountered mechanical problems with his new GM engine. Cox was outstanding for Rye House, his battles with Jamie Luckhurst and Mullett being the highlights of the evening. Australian Kerry Gray impressed on his Kingsmead debut, but the Rockets were unfortunate to lose Steve Naylor and Steve Bryenton after a Heat 9 incident for which skipper Barney Kennett was amazingly excluded only to be reinstated after some discussion on the telephone. Boston got back on the winning trial with a hard-earned victory over Rye House, fighting back from a seven-point deficit after just five heats.Rye House relied heavily on Bob Garrad and Marvyn Cox and it was this duo who scored maximum points in the penultimate heat to set up a last heat decider, Boston skipper David Gagen made no mistakes as he top scored with 14 points, being beaten only by the impressive Cox, who performed a superb outside dash to deny Gagen his maximum.Boston welcomed back Steve Lomas and after a tentative start, he gained confidence to score a vital ten points.

Many moons have passed since Newcastle were last forced into a Heat 5 tactical substitution in a home match. But with the Rockets blasting off at searing pace and holding a 16-8 advantage, such was the situation.The Rye House tally had been boosted by a rare Hunter spill while leading in the opening race. But the Australian quickly made amends by winning Heats 5 and 6 and with good support from Emerson and Scarisbrick, the Diamonds were back on level terms.The Rockets thrice winners of league encounters at Newcastle in the past, were always a threat with Cox, Garrad and Gray matching the Diamonds best point for point. Cox was beaten four times but on each occasion only after narrowing the intial gap considerably.Garrad got the drop on Owen in Heat 13 to lead for a lap before the Diamonds skipper unceremoniously sent him flying on the pits bend. This incident started a spate of falls in the succeeding races. In Heat 14 three came down on the first corner, DeKok retiring from the fray with an injured foot. Raw reserve Pailor became something of a hero in the re-run by taking Bryenton from the back, though it has to be said the Rocket was struggling on a bent frame.At 47-42, Rye House needed a last heat 5-0 to salvage something. Barnsley took yet another tumble, but that man Hunter , on a new motor provided by sponsor Pat Whelan, was on hand to see the league leaders home.

From the start it was obvious that Exeter intended to take a good score bck to Devon fro the second leg and after nine heats they held a two-point lead.#the first half saw a number of falls and twice Rob Ashton hit the deck when challenging Bob Garrad but on the second occasion it was the Rocket whoe was excluded for unfair riding.The Rye House attack came too late despite magnificent efforts from Steve Bryenton who gave good backing to Marvyn Cox and Garrad.Cox recorded a faultless paid maximum and successfully challenged Silver Helmet holder Keith Millard who failed to win a race all afternoon.

Exeter progressed easily into the semi-finals of the National League Knock-out Cup with a 32-points victory over Rye House, which gave them an aggregate win by 18 points.It took Exeter just six heats to wipe out their 14-point deficit from the previous day's first leg, but a chapter of mechanical problems for Exeter meant that there were still only two points overall between the teams after 10 heats.Four 5-1 successes in the reaming six races, however, ensured Exeter's progress with Marvyn Cox the only visitor to win a race.Exeter were without veteran Bob Coles, who was not allowed to race as he was unable to produce an ACU rider's licence - despite the fact that the season is now five months old.

Canterbury avenged their narrow first leg defeat at the hands of the Kestrels with a good solid performance in which each rider played his full part. After a splendid opening race win by Thomas, who squeezed past Hibbs after a great scrap, Crusaders took the lead with a maximum win and remained in front thereafter. The Hibbs-Mullett pairing, after the first 3-3, secured three excellent 5-1's. If Canterbury can reproduce this form on their NL visit, scheduled to be Crayford's last league match of the season, then all hell could be let loose. Although all but Teager, who had an unusal off-night, managed heat wins for Crayford, only Thomas and Bosley proved consistant. Rockets, sadly weakened by injury, never posed any sort of threat, but Cox, after opening ride error, scorched to three fine wins and Garrad, too, demonstrated fine form. Dave Welch - Speedway Star

Stoke are making a habit of leaving it late before making certain of National League points at home and the Loomer Road fans were treated to another tight, tense match before Rye House were mastered.John Jackson, showing a welcome return to form, Peter Smith and Tom Owen countered the threat from an impressive Bob Garrad and Marvyn Cox although it took some doing in the case of Garrad whose first heat time was only a tenth of a second outside Phil Collins' track record that has stood for three years.In the end it was the steadiness of Ian Robertson and reserve Jim Burdfied that proved more valuable to Stoke who trailed by four points after two heats, clawed their way back to lead by two with seven races gone and were never afterwards behind although Garrad and Cox always kept the Rockets in touch.

While rider replacement was cancelled out in the first match, Rockets called upon the facility against Glasgow but it was not necessary to utilise it to the full as the Tigers provided only minor opposition.Glasgow lacked backing for their top two of Steve Lawson and Jim McMillan wh matched each other point for point during their defeat. Both riders scored 10 points from their programmed rides and after winning the toss of a coin McMillan successfully challenged Cox for the Silver Helmet.

Not a very convincing victory for the FSO Tigers against what was little but a two-man Rockets team. With Marvyn Cox and Bob Garrad working hard, Rye were only seven points adrift with five races to go.In the end they ran out of riders and Carl Blackbird made the vital difference with another double figure score on a day when Richard Knight and Robert Henry, both with mechanical problems,dropped quite a bit below their best form.

Mildenhall needed a victory at Rye House to boost their championship challenge but the Rockets were in no mood to concede defeat.The home side took an early lead against a lacklustre Fen Tigers team and after 10 heats , a 12-point advantage had been established. Mildenhall hit back with maximums in the two following races with good team riding efforts from Derek Harrison but in the closing stages Rye House were dominant.As usual, Bob Garrad and Marvyn Cox headed the Rye House scorechart with excellent support from Steve Bryenton. In each of his outings, Bryenton's efferescent style brought the crowd to their feet and his 11 (paid 13) total was a fine reward for his efforts.

With only two heat winners, Oxford never looked like taking the league points from Rye House. The Garrad/Gray partnership looked particularly impressive, and with Cox scoring 18, Garrad 17 and Gray paid 13, Oxford had nothing to match the Rockets top three.The ace Oxford could have had up their sleeve, reserve Nigel De'ath for some reason was only three points, but went out and defeated the unbeaten Garrad easily from the gate. In doing so, this boosted his ego for the Silver Helmet in which he easily beat an unbeaten Cox to retain the Helmet.

Exeter rounded off their home fixtures in the Natiional League with a 14-point victory over Rye House, but they were given a keen fight by the Rockets, who were only six points in arrears with four heats remaining.It proved to be one of the season's most entertaining matches at the County Ground with Steve Bryenton and Marvyn Cox leading the Rye House challenge.But Exeter again had the neccessary strength in depth to clinch victory despite the fact that Keith Millard suffered a series of mechanical problems. Alun Rossiter, newly promoted from reserve, had a fine evening , dropping only one point to the visitors.

Using rider replacement for injured Steve Naylor, Rye House provided plenty of good entertainment against Weymouth in this National League fixture at Wessex Stadium.The opening eight heats were tightly contested, and while the home side managed six race winners during this spell, their lead had been kept to just eight points, with the visitors' team manager, Hugh Saunders, using his resources wisely.Heat 11 produced an unusual incident, when both Bob Garrad and Steve Schofield fell on the final bend, Rye House's Kerry Gray won the race, with Weymouths new signing Kym Mauger second, being declared the only finishers.However, a very sporting gesture by Garrad, who explained to the referee that he was at fault in causing Schofield to fall, certainly earned the Rocket the accolade of the crowd, while the Wildcat was awarded third place.

This action-packed meeting was closely fought throughout with a maximum of four points seperating the teams until the last race.The Diamonds duo of Rod Hunter and Joe Owen were supported well and proved too much for the Rockets who, apart from Marvyn Cox, lacked consistency.Heat 5 saw Cox and Hunter clash but in a desperate bid to take command the Diamonds virtually fenced the home favourite on the last lap. Revenge for Cox was sweet and their later encountr in Heat 13 proved to be a convincing victory for the Rocket after taking Hunter from behind.Despite their defeat full credit to Rockets Chris Chaplin, Kerry Gray and Steve Bryenton who fought for every point and responded well to their additional rides.

After an opening heat victory Weymouth soon slipped into deficit despite the efforts of Martin Yeates.Wildcats' Simon Cross gave good suport and Gordon Humphreys attempts did not go unnoticed while for Rye House Marvyn Cox was unstoppable and Bob Garrad dropped his only points to Yeates.Steve Bryenton's progress continued with three fine wins only marred by a fall in Heat 7.

Although it was expected to be the usual end of season challenge match, both teams had other ideas. Their efforts warmed up a chilled crowd, and also earned praise from the referee.Knights' early lead was quickly pulledd back by the Rockets duo of Bobby Garrad and Marvyn Cox, who then put them head. Back into the lead went the Knights, and it was maintained with Kith White inflicting two defeats on Cox.Heat wins for Chris Pidcock and guest rider Dave Perks then settled the outcome, before Garrad got revenge for his opening heat defeat by White.

Hackney were worthy winners of this cahllenge match and Jens Rasmussen easily headed their scorechart.Rockets captain Bob Garrad was plagued by mechanical problems throughout the afternoon and was almost lapped in the opening race. Team-mate Marvyn Cox started by wining his first two races but was convincingly beaten by Rasmussen when they met in Heat 9 and 15.Reserve Chris Chaplin benefited from additional rides and scored 13 paid points which gave him the position of highest scorer in the Rye House team.

According to the form-book the four qualifiers for the final of the Rye House Club Championship should have been Marvyn Cox, Bob Garrad, Steve Naylor and Steve Bryenton but events were not so predictable. Cox was relegated to third place by fast-gating Chris Chaplin and Bryenton in Heat 4 and suffered an engine failure in Heat 11 when up against Garrad, Naylor and Bryenton. This gave qualifying places to Garrad and Naylor who were joined by Chaplin and John Barclay but Garrad again took command from the gate to secure the Clara Biddall Trophy with Chaplin a worthy runner-up.
