Local resident Brian Kinlan has been writing poetry for the past ten years, but more seriously for the past three years. His tagline is “Poetry, for people who don’t like poetry” – which the positive feedback has proven to be true. With Pockets of Resistance he didn’t set out to write an autobiography, he was just looking to write different material. Triggered by reminiscing whilst taking his wife to visit his mother, the whole thing came out in a flood and was all his memories that he had about his childhood and the things that he got up to growing up on an estate. It’s a wide range of material, both funny and sad.

Each short poem acts as a small window into Brian’s early life and as the reader gets further into

Pockets of Resistance, a poetic autobiography

the book a wider understanding of him and his childhood emerge. I found this to be a lovely little poetry book and it is great to see local poet producing such high quality. Brian’s quote on the back of the book says “This is the one I should have done, it’s just me.” I think he has managed exactly that, with every page telling a little story of its own. Other people who have read it have really liked it too and can’t put it down. It’s even

been purchased by Calderdale Libraries.

Brian grew up in Deighton, Huddersfield and now lives in Ripponden with his wife Antonia and their children, where he continues to write.

Following the end of World War 2, Leonard Cheshire, the most highly decorated bomber pilot of the war and a commander in the “Dambusters”, who came back from war physically unscathed, dedicated his life to helping those less fortunate than himself.
