EARTH HOUSEEschatology

Eschatology is the theological study concerning death, judgement, heaven, and hell; the ultimate destiny of humanity and the subject matter for an upcoming album by Florida based Earth House.

The eschatology project began with an image taken with a Holga 135c which was then seperated into four different sections, each representing one fourth of the eschaton. Opposing halftone lines were then placed meeting in the metaphorical space where judgement meets heaven, or where the mountains meet the sky.

In the summer of 2013 my employer assigned me the task of designing and developing a new website for the company to replace the existing one, which only had a single page with a contact field.

I chose Wordpress as my main site development tool because of its efficiency and ability to be updated frequently. I also chose it because of the way in which it has integrated Google’s web development tools and Analytics into its interface. Using these tools I was able to move the Screen Arts website from the bottom to the top of search engines.

III. SPACE:EIGHT

Page 12: RYAN PALM - PORTFOLIO 2014

In April of 2013 my employer gave me the task, upon completion of the Screen Arts website, to refurbish the existing website for his art gallery space:eight. The space:eight gallery has become very well known in the southeast for hosting high profile artists from the Lowbrow art movement, and for its recent exhibition Art Dorks Rise.

The space:eight website required more than just a bit of updating. When I took over responsibility of the site it was using a very outdated version of wordpress, and was completely disorganized. In response to this issue I had to go through the site page by page fixing everything from navigational errors to problems with images appearing correctly, using code more than often to correct issues.I also worked on trying to bring more people to the site by implementing the use of SEO’s and tools provided by Google to bring it higher in the search engines.

The image left demonstrates how we chose to archive artists exhibitions on the site, using imagery to navigate. Rollover text came in when the mouse was above each image and clicking on that would take the user to the artists page.

V. PENTAPRISM MEDIA

Page 18: RYAN PALM - PORTFOLIO 2014

In early 2010, my roommate and I began colaborating together on videos for various projects initially under no name or alias. Feeling the need to organize, we developed what became Pentaprism Media with the intention of creating an alternative source of entertainment.

To try and create a distinction between what we we’re trying to do compared to what people had done before we took an anti-media stance. We were no MTV or Vh1 and we didn’t want to be; we wanted uniqueness and an identity all our own.

LEFT: The image pictured left and on the page before were designs created to try to illustrate the bold identity of Pentaprism. It had to communicate that we weren’t just trying to recreate something that already existed. Pentaprism was going to be gritty, edgy, unique, and still something that people could relate to.

ABOVE: The video above was the first teaser we created for Pentaprism. You can watch it now by scanning the code below.

VI. PROMOTIONAL WORK

Page 21: RYAN PALM - PORTFOLIO 2014

In January of 2011 I began what would turn into several years of doing work as an independant promoter for bands and events in St. Augustine, FL. What began as something I did to help friends that were on tour turned into a nearly full time job. When I started I had no experience, help or formal training. I had to teach myself everything through trial and error. Consequently, I gained a wealth of knowledge related to being a promoter, having good public relation skills, and understanding how to effectively communicating through design what your event was going to be like. I learned very early in the process that a high quality flyer directly effected the turnout of an event. It also communicates to people that you work with that you are a professional and are capable of working in such a manner. Through this model of conducting business I was able to pay bands that typically didnt make much on tour hundreds of dollars a night while still covering my overhead costs.
