PROFESSIONAL WORK

City Public Works and the department of Policy and Communications recognized the need for improvements on portions of these sidewalks to support economic development in the downtown core and to create aesthetically pleasing streetscapes that are accessible for all users. In order to accomplish this, the city selected Hedstrom Design, a local landscape architecture firm to develop design concepts balancing these complex issues.

The project limits are the sections of sidewalk on Market Street between Cumberland Avenue and Church Street and on Union Avenue between Gay Street and Market Street.

My role in the project was to collect base materials, check and document site conditions, create a base map, and assist in the production of design concepts. Multiple concepts were developed into 2 options given to the city.

CHAPIN TERRACE STORMWATER PARK

SPRINGFIELD, MA Adaptive retrofit infiltration systems along streets reduce the impact of runoff on urban watersheds. Design interventions on a boulevard in Springfield, MA are presented as distinguishable aesthetic experiences to raise acceptance, increase the spatial use, and to make infiltration more desirable in urban environments. This interdisciplinary proposal was developed through collaboration with the Springfield Water and Sewer Commission with the intention of being implemented as a pilot project that could be replicated elsewhere in the city and region. The goal of the project is to develop a master plan for a healthcare complex housing a tuberculosis clinic in Takhar, Afghanistan that incorporates the desired functions of the clinic within the framework of a culturally sensitive design utilizing principles of contemporary restorative garden theory. The site will provide the patients of the complex and their families with a safe location to gather and rest while they are recovering or dealing with a loved one’s recovery. A clear circulation system will provide for patient movement, service access, and parking areas that keeps patient areas private and serene separate from service areas.

The Alden Street corridor is the primary connections between the intersection known as “Six Corners,” and Springfield College. It is currently avoided by most college bound traffic, instead serving as the main thoroughfare for many motorists commuting to the urban core creating a dangerous situation for immediate residents, pedestrians, and cyclists.

A new streetscape system forces a driver to slow down by using narrow streets with winding and splitting corridors thus creating a more pedestrian and bike friendly street.

The streetscape system is a modular system comprised of linear plantings that allow stormwater infiltration, linear recycled concrete planks, and bump outs that feature rain gardens and gathering spaces. These gathering spaces feature benches that formed in the shape of the footprints of former houses of the neighborhood attributing to the history of the place. New rowhouses will provide much needed off-campus housing for local students. The new development exhibits sustainable landscapes providing for both public and private spaces.

Reclaimed space becomes a network of pedestrian and bicycle corridors

McGrath Highway in its current state divides the city of Somerville geographically, socially, and physically. Three scenarios were developed to address issues. The gray scenario shown here addresses these and additional concerns that provide more immediate simpler solutions as the city transitions into a green multi-modal corridor. This proposal creates multi-modal transportation connections across McGrath and to local destinations, commercial infill that creates a stronger commercial corridor with more jobs, and improves the community aesthetics with streetscape improvements including new art facades, sculpture installations, tree lined streets, and a significant decrease in impervious surfaces.

The objective of the central focus area of McGrath Highway is to provide linkage from Brickbottom and Union Square located in the south focus area to the northern neighborhoods. Bike lanes along the major north-south residential roads such as Cross Street and Walnut Street as well as east-west roads including Broadway, Bonair Street, and Pearl Street creates better connectivity knitting the community together. This corridor provides opportunity for redevelopment of existing commercial spaces incorporating more diverse industries. McGrath Highway becomes a multi-modal hub of public art opportunities integrated into existing parks, neighborhoods, and commercial destinations.

A sustainable housing development was designed to support a lower cost of development creating a more desirable place to live. A range of affordable housing options are used to shape and define great spaces for individuals, family, and community. The layout is sensitive to the topography of the site, implements quality stormwater management, and uses passive solar design. A grading plan was completed for the site. Finish floor elevations were established to provide a detailing of private spaces and circulation. The site was laid out in accordance with town of Amherst subdivision regulations and conservation requirements for a multi-family housing devlopment.

HISTORIC CORRIDOR

2010 Knoxville Metropolitan Planning Commission Award of Excellence in Environmental Sustainability

Firm: East Tennessee Community Design Center

Client: Legacy Parks Foundation

The Urban Wilderness is a 1,000-acre urban forest connecting an existing nature education center, three civil war forts, a state wildlife management area, and ten city parks that promotes the value of parks, recreation, and land conservation as an economic driver for the greater community. This project will keep significant open space and ridgetops of South Knoxville preserved and protected in perpetuity for the benefits of current residents and those of generations to follow. After extensive landscape analysis and community design charettes, properties were identified based on connectivity potential, wildlife corridor potential, idyllic views, and ecological significance.

Since 2010, Legacy Parks has made 8 properties that create key connections in the corridor. The southern loop has been successfully completed creating a 15 mile loop connecting 5 parks with a multi-use trail system. This provides easy access to hiking, biking, and running trails that includes tours through unique rock features, mature forests, working farmland and views of the Tennessee River.
