February Winners Announced in Carpool Cash Raffle

February winners have been an-nounced in the cash raffle for carpool-ers, vanpoolers, and those who take buses or bikes to work.

One winner was chosen for each week in February from those who carpooled, and one winner for the month was chosen from the other entries. Each winner received a cash prize of $100.

Winners are:Diane Bickford, LPN, labor and deliveryGreg Bickford, OR Central Sterile Supply AssociateHeather Swales, assistant director, CICUSteven Boe, resident, Department of MedicineMarie Kuchy, RN, PACUDarlene Henry, security officer

In addition, one lucky person was cho-sen to receive an assigned priority parking space in the new garage for up to a year when it is complete. That win-ner was Steven Boe.

In addition, Catharine Bon, resource co-ordinator, is also a lucky winner of a reserved parking space in the new ga-rage, thanks to fellow staff member Car-la Burgess. Carla was the winner of the space for January, but offered to pass it on to someone else because she is now so hooked on taking the bus to work!

“I’d like to say that I was motivated to use the bus by some noble reason, like saving the environ-ment,” Burgess said. “In truth, it was a fight with my hus-band. We were try-ing to juggle two cars with four driv-ers (children with after school jobs), and we both snipped to each other that we’d take a bus rather than drive in with the other. All it took was one ride in and we were both instantly hooked.”

Burgess said there are many reasons she now loves to commute to work by bus.

“It’s so easy: There are lots of times to choose from to get into to work or back home; and we are helping to save the en-vironment. I’m sure we are saving mon-ey, but the greatest thrill is a stress-free ride. I come in from Avon, so it’s the high-way (ugh) or Avon Mountain through West Hartford (words cannot describe that trip.) I get on the bus, plug in my music and let the driver fight the traffic.”

She said she is also getting fitness benefits.

“I get dropped downtown where I could take a transfer right to Hudson Street, but instead I make an eight-minute walk through Bushnell Park. I burn calories for an afternoon snack.”

Burgess concluded that since she is now a devoted bus commuter, she would not need the reserved parking space in the new garage that she had won.

“If I had four cars at home I’d still take the bus; I’m never going back to driving in,” she said. “I’m actually very happy to return my parking spot for someone else to have a chance to win.”
