The RX2 International Series presented by Cooper Tires is the leading official support series to the FIA World Rallycross Championship presented by Monster Energy, developing and nurturing the discipline’s future stars.

All drivers compete in identical 310bhp machinery, with a single-round Supercar prize drive awarded to the eventual champion and a Supercar test day on offer to the second and third-placed finishers.

The 2020 calendar comprises seven events, with the first six taking place throughout Europe before a spectacular South African season finale. A range of options is available for participation depending on budget, from joining a professional team to rental arrive-and-drive packages – contact Operations Manager Russell Atkins for further information (details on final page).

WHAT IS RX2?

THE SERIES RX2 provides the perfect stepping stone for drivers climbing the rallycross ladder. In recent years, the series has welcomed competitors from disciplines as diverse as stage and cross-country rallying, cross-kart, folk race, karting, single-seaters and even SuperMoto – as well, obviously, as rallycross itself, attracting talent from the RX Academy, Super1600, TouringCar and national and regional series. While from a wide variety of backgrounds, all RX2 drivers share a common goal – that of reaching the very pinnacle of the sport, the FIA World Rallycross Championship. As a series, RX2 works hard to foster ever-closer links with World RX and World Championship promoter IMG, with RX2 drivers and teams regularly invited to join official activities from pre-event activation to autograph sessions and pre and post-race press conferences.

Taking place in front of the World Championship teams, RX2 offers aspiring rallycross superstars and independent competitors alike an extremely accessible, affordable and direct route to the top of the sport and is the perfect place for drivers to prove their potential in front of a loyal, engaged and enthusiastic audience.

BUILDING FOR THE FUTURE RX2’s primary goal is to develop the rallycross stars of the future, but organisers are similarly committed to ensuring the series remains relevant and attractive to competitors and stakeholders in an ever-evolving motorsport landscape. With that in mind, the future vision for RX2 – covering the next four years from 2021 to 2024 – will be presented in the first quarter of 2020, maintaining the well-proven format that has made the series the success it is today while continuing to innovate and move with the times. Exciting news is on the horizon – watch this space…

Nathan Heathcoate: Rising British RX star

Kent driver Nathan Heathcoate is the reigning MSA British Rallycross Champion and is making his RX2 debut this year for Team Färén, which ran another British driver, Dan Rooke, to the RX2 championship runner-up spot last year.

The 21-year-old Heathcoate competed in the RallyX on Ice series in Sweden and Norway earlier this year, impressing with his lightning starts away from the line. He kicked off his RX2 title campaign at the Mettet round in Belgium earlier this month.

RX2 is a ‘spec’ category for identical 310bhp, mid-engined, four-wheel-drive racecars, with Ford Fiesta-style bodywork, built by Olsbergs MSE in conjunction with Avitas Motorsport. It’s a support series for the future stars of the world championship, with rounds held on the support bill of selected FIA World RX events. In 2018, it’s running at Belgium, the UK, Norway, Sweden, Canada, France and South Africa.

THE World Rallycross Championship (World RX) is rapidly becoming the

next big thing in motorsport – and as WRC seems to be losing its appeal year-on-year, certainly in the UK, rallycross is increasingly where it’s at nowadays.

So much so that there’s a round of the championship at Silverstone this year, taking place on a brand-new purpose-built course, and with all sorts of feeder formulas to support it.

In the main event, manufacturers like Audi, Volkswagen, Peugeot and Hyundai hammer it out for overall honours, the cars being driven in frantic head-to-head races by the likes of Sebastien Loeb, former DTM title winner Mattias Ekstrom and Petter Solberg, among others.

But in the RX2 support category, the cars are all identical mechanically and the drivers less well known – for the time being. And that’s the machine we got to sample the new Silverstone track in.

TechniqueThe car we drove is run by Team Färén and its regular driver is the 2017 British Rallycross champion and all-round top chap Nathan Heathcote. Before we got behind the wheel, he showed us what it could do and, more to the point, what not to do around the new Silverstone rallycross track. Which – as we’d soon discover and as you can see from the pictures – has one almighty great jump in the middle that requires technique, and not just courage, to get right.

Not that the car itself is easy to tame. It makes 310bhp from a 2.4-litre engine, is four-wheel drive, costs into six figures to run for a season and is the ideal machine in which to learn the art of rallycross. Even from the passenger seat.

Off the line, Heathcote drops the clutch and the Fiesta fires itself to the first corner, a right-hander that tightens at the exit and leads into a slower, even tighter right and then to a really sharp left turn over mud before a longish straight that leads up to the jump.

Heathcote is very smooth, calm and controlled with his inputs, employing a mix of delicacy and aggression that enables him to hustle the Fiesta round the part-mud, part-tarmac course with some spooky speed and precision.

The Ford feels quick in a straight line but not wildly so, with a decent balance of power and grip, yet also a real sense of agility. We climb out after four laps, dazed by the noise and sheer violence of the experience, but reasonably sure which way the track goes and certain that we won’t be doing what Heathcote had been doing!

And then it’s our turn. Off the line, the acceleration is at least Porsche 911 strong, but it’s the speed and severity of

GETTINGAIRBORNE Huge jump is centrpiece of Silverstone’s newly built RX track

As the World Rallycross Championship hits Silverstone this weekend, we drive the purpose-built track in 310bhp RX2 monsterRALLYCROSS TAKES OFF

the gearchanges, plus the relative softness of the suspension, that initially seem most surprising. The car eats gears seemingly every half a second in a straight line (the six-speed sequential box is very short-geared) and the noise it makes in the process is deafening.

But the way the Fiesta glides across the rough ground on its smooth suspension is massively impressive. As is its pure agility, which is something that separates it from the 600bhp rallycross ‘supercars’ in the top class and allows it to feel more

at home, so the pros reckon, around the tight and twisty Silverstone track.

To us, and in this car, the layout of the track feels just right. There’s enough space to be able to overtake in several places and it should make for great spectating when the cars race here for real this weekend.

But in the end, the jump defines both our time in Heathcote’s brilliant little Fiesta RX2 and the track itself – because it’s fantastic… if you get it right. If you get it wrong, however,

the jump can be very painful indeed, not to mention rather expensive in broken car parts. The technique, as Heathcote demonstrated to us, is to give it full beans on the way up the ramp, but to then back off just before you get airborne in order to bring the nose down a touch so it doesn’t smash into the tarmac on the other side. Which is what several drivers had managed to do during practice earlier in the day!

The first time we went over the jump, we were probably a bit tentative and the landing wasn’t that bad; just a loud-ish thud and a surprisingly soft impact and away we went, down the next straight, up to a horribly tight hairpin, along another short straight then through a fast section of esses and across the start-finish line to complete the lap.

On our second lap, however, we went at it a bit harder, slid the Fiesta about quite nicely over the mud sections and then, well, got the jump ever so slightly wrong. And landed on the nose at heaven knows what kind of speed, accompanied by an almighty thump from which our back has yet to recover.

Fortunately, however, nothing fell off, and nothing started to leak out of

the Fiesta’s nose, either. We came away after another few laps grinning from ear to ear, convinced this car on this track is as good as it gets on four wheels.

Because even with a mere 310bhp, the RX2 is a proper weapon, especially around a track like Silverstone, which is maybe a little too tight for the rallycross supercars but just perfect for something as small, agile and capable as this.

So thanks Nathan and Team Färén for letting us have a go and the very best of luck for the rest of the season. And as for the future of World Rallycross generally, it looks very bright indeed.

After all, for a petrolhead, what’s not to like about some of the world’s best drivers going head to head in cars with 600bhp, and which can hit 60mph from rest in under two seconds, six abreast into turn one, sideways – for six laps?

It’s enough to make Sebastien Ogier’s dominance of the Word Rally Championship seem ever so slightly boring in comparison, so no wonder that rallycross is taking off. Literally, more often than not, in this instance!

RX2 HALL OF FAME

Kevin ErikssonKevin Eriksson won the RX Lites Cup (forerunner to

RX2) in 2014 before making his debut in the FIA World Rallycross Championship

later the same season – and immediately finishing on the podium. The Swede won in

Germany two years later with a spectacular first corner move, and spent 2018 competing for

family outfit Olsbergs MSE.

Kevin HansenKevin Hansen succeeded

namesake and countryman Eriksson as RX Lites Champion in 2015. The youngest driver ever to enter a World RX event, the Swede has made 40 starts at the pinnacle of the sport, reaching the rostrum on five occasions. He achieved his maiden victory in the 2019 curtain-raiser in Abu Dhabi en

route to third place in the World Championship standings.

Cyril RaymondCyril Raymond holds the honour

of being both the last RX Lites Champion (2016) and first RX2 Champion (2017), triumphing eight times over two seasons. The Frenchman stepped up to FIA Euro RX in 2018, winning on

home soil and securing third spot in the title table. He made his World Championship debut

with the GCK Academy the following year.

Niclas GrönholmOne of the most highly-rated prospects on the World RX

scene, Niclas Grönholm – son of rally legend Marcus Grönholm – made a one-off appearance in RX Lites in 2014 and proved

his potential with a podium on home turf. 2019 marked his

breakthrough year in the World Championship, as the ‘Flying

Finn’ won twice and was only ruled out of title contention by illness.

Jānis BaumanisLike Grönholm, Jānis Baumanis passed through RX Lites on his

way up the rallycross ladder, finishing third in Turkey in 2014. Crowned Super1600 Champion a year later, the

Latvian has gone on to make ten World RX finals to-date, with two podium finishes in 2019 propelling him to sixth place in the championship

table.

Guillaume De Ridder From a rallying background, Guillaume De Ridder made a

seamless transition to rallycross when he joined the RX2 grid in 2017. Two seasons yielded seven podium finishes – an

impressive 50 per cent strike rate – including two victories,

securing him the overall runner-up laurels in 2018 and a full-

time World Championship seat with the GCK Academy in 2019.

TESTIMONIALS

“RX2 is beyond doubt the best training ground for a career in international rallycross. In a single-make series in which everybody has the same car at their disposal, the driver and set-up really make the difference.

“The calibre of the competition is extremely high, so it’s essential to feel at one with the Supercar Lites car. It’s a lot of fun to drive – a bit like a four-wheel-drive version of a go-kart – and very easy to get to grips with and fine-tune, and I loved the two-and-a-half seasons I spent in the category.

“As an official support series to World RX, RX2 puts drivers right in the shop window and is an ideal opportunity to learn the discipline’s major tracks. For me, there’s no question that it’s the best series around for young drivers looking to step up to Supercar level.”

Cyril Raymond, 2016 RX Lites and 2017 RX2 Champion; 2019 World RX Driver

“Since its early days, RX2 has helped to create the biggest stars of the future. In allowing competitors to race on World RX tracks at a lower budget and providing them with first-class media coverage, RX2 has established itself as the place to be for young drivers aiming to raise their profile and reach the highest level of the World Rallycross Championship.”

Nicolas Dubernard, Journalist, Pure Rallycross

“RX2 is quite simply the best way to prepare for World RX. Supercar Lites is perfect for learning all the racing skills a rallycross driver requires and how to be efficient behind the steering wheel. The level is extremely high, and a lot of top Supercar drivers have passed through the series.

“Nowadays, being a quick driver alone is no longer enough if you want to progress. The RX2 organisers have clearly understood the need to help drivers to develop their profile and off-track skills to shape them into the complete package, arranging workshops on topics from media training to data analysis and tyre management, all led by industry experts with huge experience in the field.

“Last but by no means least is the outstanding exposure that competitors in RX2 enjoy. Being included in World RX activities and the Facebook livestream brings a lot of visibility, showcasing the series’ drivers to fans all around the globe as well as the World RX team principals. This offers great value to partners and sponsors, and is yet another reason why RX2 is unquestionably the best World RX feeder series around.”

Guillaume De Ridder, 2018 RX2 Runner-Up and 2019 World RX Driver

“RX2 is probably the greatest programme for any young rallycross driver. Identical cars mean everybody is fighting on the same terms, making it easy to see who is performing well and allowing talent to rise to the top. You also get to race on the same tracks as the World Championship, and the series’ good TV and social media coverage makes it easier to find international partners to do long-term deals with.”
