Assessment
First Phonics
First Words
Developing Reading and
Writing
Levelled Progression
Children are assessed and grouped according to their phonic knowledge. Each child is then taught at the level of their phonic knowledge to ensure quick progress.
The 44 sounds and corresponding letters are introduced and taught systematically.
Children read a series of levelled decodable texts, both fi ction and non-fi ction and do integrated writing activities, including handwriting practice.
Children learn to blend using sound cards. Then they use short ‘ditties’ to practise early reading and writing before being taught more letter/s sounds correspondences.
Ongoing assessment means that groups are constantly adjusted to ensure every child makes the quickest possible progress.

How is Read Write Inc. Phonics structured? Eligible for phonics
A systematic approach – a key element of the Read Write Inc. approach is that practice across the school is completely consistent. This is achieved because the Head teacher, all the teachers and teaching assistants from the Foundation Stage to Year 6, are trained to teach reading.
Transformational pedagogy – high-quality teaching is an essential part of the Read Write Inc. Phonics programme so that children learn to read and write as quickly and effectively as possible. Participation, praise, pace, purpose and passion are at the heart of every Read Write Inc. lesson, making every lesson count and every lesson fun.
The rst, most overt feature of headship in these schools is the determination that children will learn to read. Teaching reading is the avowed core purpose of the schools.HMI Ofsted report ‘Reading by Six’ 2010
Effective assessment and groupings – all the children are grouped across the school in terms of reading ability. This means that they are reading at their level, every day. The more homogenous the grouping, the more focused the teaching can be so that children make faster progress.
Inspiring training – all Ruth Miskin’s trainers are classroom teachers – they have a deep understanding of how to teach reading, and can help you by modelling lessons with your children.
Parental engagement – all schools using Read Write Inc. Phonics involve parents from the start, explaining to them the approach and getting their support. In addition, the black and white versions of the storybooks are perfect for take-home to ensure the child can practise the same book at home.

Read Write Inc. One-to-one Phonics Tutoring KitReview by John Dabell, Teach Primary, July 2011The Read Write Inc. One-to-one Phonics Tutoring Kit from Oxford University Press is a box of phonics goodies that you can literally pick up and teach with children. It contains everything you need for high quality, one-to-one reading tuition. Inside you will find a professional development DVD and handbook with demonstrations and words of wisdom from the highly esteemed phonics missionary Ruth Miskin – arguably the UK’s leading authority on teaching children to read. It includes video clips on teaching ‘pure’ sounds, sound-blending, high-frequency words, tricky words, comprehension and fluency. There are also plenty of detailed teaching notes that give you the confidence to walk the tal.
The Read Write Inc. One-to-one Phonics Tutoring Kit can be used comfortably by individual special needs assistants, especially after viewing the step-by-step guidance on the DVD, and would also be useful for more senior staff. It’s a kit for everyone to dive into as it is everyone’s responsibility to get every child reading.
VerdictThis resource is first-class for me and I would have no hesitation in committing to it, safe in the knowledge its contents would enable me to deliver the best teaching children deserve.
Children using these materials will learn to read very quickly because of the structured and rigorous approach to teaching phonics. It’s not hard to work out that children who read are more successful than those that don’t. As Ruth Miskin herself says, ‘Reading is not just the foundation but the whole building itself.’

Read Write Inc. Fresh Start
Case Study of Read Write Inc. Fresh Startat Matthew Humberstone CE School Written by Julia Hepburn, Head of Learning Support
Pupils have found the programme fun, stimulating and rewarding, giving them a feeling of confi dence never previously achieved. Members of staff have also enjoyed delivering and taking part in the programme. In the fi rst 6 month period the average reading age of Year 7 pupils improved by 14 months, and the spelling by 11.5 months. One pupil improved her reading score by 26 months. We will expand the programme to benefi t more pupils. Knowing about the dramatic success of this year’s students will encourage others.

Takes your pupils from learning to read to reading to learnRead Write Inc. Comprehension combines a wealth of fi ction and non-fi ction whole texts. It teaches comprehension strategies and improves and extends children’s writing. Read Write Inc. Comprehension can be used with any child who is a skilled decoder, by age 7.
Starting with debate around an issue, the teacher uses a ‘Big Question’ to introduce the fi rst reading of a linked real book or text
Talk for understanding
Children read and re-read the text in pairs. They discuss the questions to talk about, enriching their vocabulary and understanding of what they read

Structured activities support the children’s development. These include ‘building a sentence’, ‘vocabulary catch’, ‘hold a sentence’, spelling practice, drafting and redrafting
Developing Writing
The children’s imagination take off. They start to use sentences they would never have used before they did the Comprehension modules. Children love the ‘ ocabulary catch’ and the ‘Fantastic sentences’.Literacy Coordinator, Whetstone Field Primary Schools, Walsall
