:: Reykjavk Visual Music Punto y Raya Festival 2014

A feast of pure Colour, Motion and Sound. Non-representational Art took the lead at the first edition of Reykjavk Visual Music Punto y Raya Festival, which ran from January 30th to February 2nd 2014 at HARPA, the Reykjavk Concert Hall, and Listasafn Reykjavkur, the Reykjavk Art Museum (Iceland).

The programme featured live performances by major artists like Ryoji Ikeda and Ryoichi Kurokawa; specially commissioned opening concerts by Bret Battey + Hugi Gumundsson & Sigurur Gujnsson + Anna orvaldsdttir ; guest Austrian and Polish Film panoramas, and the selected works in the international live set & short-film Competitions, which brought together nearly 500 artists from 46 countries.

Born from a joint effort between RCVM (Reykjavk Center for Visual Music - Iceland) and Punto y Raya (Dot&Line Festival in Spain, now in its fifth edition), the Reykjavk Visual Music Punto y Raya Festival invited all audiences to leave preconceptions behind and give in to the overwhelming power of pure artistic expression, in what came to be the greatest event in the history of abstract live-cinema and film.

Parallel activities included the Cadences of Colour and Line exhibit at Listasafn Reykjavkur (February 1st to April 13th) and the 2014 Academy Programme, comprising workshops open to local students and general audiences, and tutored by renowned professionals in the field.

The festival also collaborated with Dark Music Days for the opening concert. >> myrkir.is

Juanjo Fernndez_Gnomalab 1974 | Terrassa Spain Juanjo is a creator, who conscientiously searches for the right channels for his contents; accurate vehicles for the discourse impregnating his work; if we take a quick look at his career, we can appreciate the strength of the formal aspect in formats such as video, which might mislead us to the point of stating that Juanjo is a formal artist. The how is important to him, but the what is crucial. This misconception may arise from his constant formal experimentation. He creates works in various formats, such as video, real-time visuals, interactive installations and mobile applications. www.gnomalab.es

Curated and introduced by Thomas Renoldner, co-curator of the Animation Avantgarde programmes at the Vienna Independent Shorts Filmfestival, and many other screenings. Under the eloquent title Abstraction and Organic forms / structures, this section proposes an intense journey through the history of Austrian abstract cinema and its particular relation to Nature, from the stroboscopic discs of Simon von Stampfer (1832), to the quasi-pictorial expressionism of Martin Anibas (1990), the complex computer-generated imagery of LIA (2008) or the flickering abstraction of Billy Roisz (2012). The films were screened in FULL HD, and we held a Q&A session to conclude.

Abstract Animation exploring Icelandic Music Visualizing sound with analogue techniques Treating Icelandic music samples as sources of inspiration, or musical score for a pictorial creation, this workshop aimed to underline the tight relationship between sound and image, music and animated film. The construction of animated abstract film may be similar to a musical piece structure, allowing for the free montage and multiplied reconstruction of the fragments, and operating in a sensory dimension. The participants were invited to discover the whole process of creating an animated film, using analogue and accessible techniques, and the most elementary prime matter for the creation of their own interpretations of the proposed musical sample.

Mapping and Light-Drawing on Location Live Digital Experimentation with Dots & Lines This workshop proposed an introduction to live experimentation using digital tools, trying to create enhanced realities by drawing in space with projected light. Participants were invited to draw on various objects and surfaces with the help of several programmes for real time video generation and manipulation, creating Site specific works without having any deep knowledge of the software, but using only some basic tricks. The goal was to show some of the most common tools for these kinds of stage works; to discover their possibilities and how to apply them without using pre-recorded material. The participants researched the location, the venues architecture, the room where the workshop took place; corners, ceilings or even the furniture itself were good options to create site- specific works. They didnt focus on any particular software, since their goal was not to go deep into the tool, but to create from basic multiple resources. These are some of the programmes they worked with (in no particular order): Madlabs (madmapper), VDMX, Quartz Composer and Modul8. This workshop was open to visual artists, VJs, architects, photographers, lighting designers and the general audience. No previous experience in programming or video editing was required.

Moving Dots & Lines in Processing The goal was to introduce the participants to the many possibilities that Processing offers through the animation of simple dots and lines. The participants created various applications with which they drew, moved and animated lines and dots. Ramrez showed how to monitor data from the real world through KINECT sensors to use them as parameters for the final animations. And finally, the participants created a visual instrument, which brought together the generative dotline graphics, the interaction from the real world, and sound. This way, they were also be able to play music LIVE. The workshop proposed a previous introduction to Processing for those participants whod never been in contact with code programming before, so that they could follow up with the rest of the course. Course Structure: 1. Introduction to Processing. Drawing dots and lines. 2. Introduction to Object-Oriented Programming. Moving dots and lines. 3. The libraries. Animating dots and lines according to Physics. 4. Interactivity. Moving dots and lines with our body. 5. Sound. Design and implementation of a visual instrument.

Tengia: co-creating mixed-media animation An animated cadavre exquis This workshop intended to create a platform for the participants to connect, collaborate and inspire each other in the process of translation of their experiences and observations into abstract forms and movements i.e. an Abstract Animation. With the use of varied materials and techniques, they explored the ever-evolving and expanding vocabulary of Animation. Each participant created a frame(s) and passed it on to the other to build upon. A few themes were shared with the participants, and one was selected to work upon collectively. The festival's energy and essence, combined with the participants' own memories, thoughts and reflections, were explored and translated into abstract forms, colours, sounds and movements in the creative expressions of each of the participants. The intention was to explore a process of co-creation or participatory design, and see what meaning emerged from the experiment. The techniques used were hand-drawing with pen/pencil & paper or stylus & Wacom tablets, still photography, and stop-motion animation.

Synthesizing Live Visual Music Combining Visual Music with Touch It is now possible to carry a visual music studio in your pocket. A studio that rivals the quality of the first classic films. Rendering in real time what used to months to prepare. Because it is possible to react to the visuals in real time, it is possible for you, as a performer, to immerse yourself in a feedback loop between playing and exploring. This workshop aimed to create such feedback loop. Warren demonstrated how to patch a Midi piano keyboard to a visual musical instrument and controlling parameters through tablet TouchOSC and a 3D body sensor to track head movement of a live performance of the piece EnterLeave. Participants were shown how to create their own patches and custom shaders with Pure Data, TouchOSC, and an iOS 7 app, called Pyrl, which was made available during the festival. Intended audience included: musicians, visual artists, VJs, animators, and coders.

Dot Matrix Dual 16mm screening Dot Matrix is a twin 16mm projection. Images overlap (ie are projected onto the same space). Images are of photogrammed 'dots'. Sound is also the sound of the dots as they pass the optical sound head of the 16mm projectors. Both films are 'flicker films' - ie alternate black frames with images of the dots. The two flickering images landing on the same screen generate amazing interference patterns. Sound is various 'tones', emanating from two channels. Tuohy held a Q&A session after the screening.

Improvising Abstract Film Master Class on Aquamation and other hand-made techniques The Improvising Abstract Film Master Class discussed the concept of improvised animated abstract film. Historical examples as well as clips from the instructors own films illustrated the thesis that film can be used as an improvisational, spontaneous medium in a way similar to abstract expressionist painting. The focus was put on a technique developed by the instructor which involves painting with water on Japanese disappearing image paper (used in gimmicks like the Zen Board or the Buddha Board). The presentation of the technique, known as aquamation, was part of the Master Class. The participants also had a chance to try this method by themselves.

Animations by NID students Abstract experimentation from India The first semester for postgraduate students at NID (National Institute of Design) consists of what is termed as the foundation programme. This twelve week course consists of courses in drawing, colour, composition and form. However, the professors thought that a synthesis of these subjects was lacking. In the New Media Design programme, they decided to introduce a four week course on experimental animation with the aim of synthesizing their learning. This is a challenging course, and requires the students to let their thoughts flow unconstrained, while learning the basics of animation techniques and at the same time, exploring the idea of movement in a cinematic medium. Professor Ajay Tiwari and Dr. Jignesh Khakhar introduced us to the work carried out at NID and screened a selection of abstract films produced by some of their students.
