but then something happened!
For second half of the 20th century, engineers had one “problem” to solve!!

8!
annual vehicles miles traveled increased on an annual basis for a century!

but then something else happened!
13!
annual VMT flattened out!
14!
and per capita VMT took a deep dive!
15!
states that drive less have a better economy!
16!
the simple facts!• millennials are now the largest generation in
the United States. !• people aged 16 to 34 drove 23 percent
fewer miles on average in 2009 than they did in 2001 !
• only 44 percent of teenagers are getting driver’s licenses within a year of eligibility. !
• 46 percent of 18-to-24-year-olds would choose Internet access over owning a car.!
why did this happen!
• millennial migration to cities!• after-effect of recession!• cost !• mobile devices!• shared economy!
but, we have another issue !
State of Good Repair!
“We’re in a mess in America when it comes to transportation, Every transit system is 50 years old and crumbling. The interstates are crumbling. Bridges are falling down.”! !–Ray LaHood, former Secretary of Transportation!
and. finally.!Urban areas account for 80.7 percent of the U.S. population’! !Cities have gained more people in the three-plus years since the 2010 Census than they gained for the entire previous decade.!

Premise!Innovative complete streets projects are being delayed because the public does not like change (and -- by their very nature -- complete streets projects represent change). Volumes of materials for complete streets design are readily available, but there are no good sources on how to talk about these projects. !!
Communications strategy, not design, is the large impediment to transforming urban streets.! !Proposal! The creation of a playbook on how to discuss the (1) need, (2) function, and (3) utility of complete streets projects with the goal to arm public officials as they push their new initiatives. !!!!!
