If you haven't made your will yet, here are somegood reasons for doing so;
• Manypeoplenowcohabitinsteadofmarrying, including same sex couples. They think that they will be provided for if their partner dies. Without a will your next of kin may inherit everything instead of your partner.
• Doyouhavechildrenfrommorethanone relationship? If so you will need to specify how much of your estate they are to inherit and why.
At Emmersons we have designed a comprehensive questionnaire covering a range of issues that you should consider when making a will. We can also advise on the best way to reduce the potential for care home fees. Our aim is to ensure that your wishes are carried out without anyone being able to challenge your will. It could cost thousands of pounds and a lot of heartache if a will is challenged.
We also deal with Powers of Attorney andContested Estates.

INDEX OF ADVERTISERSRIGHT UP YOUR STREET LEGAL MATTERS
by Jacqueline Emmerson
emmersonssolicitorswww.emmersons-solicitors.co.uk
We’ve just separated, how are we going to afford to live?
CollaborativeFamilyLawyer
When couples separate they can often afford to cope in the short term by living off credit cards or using their savings. If one party feels that they are not to blame for the end of the relationship, eg. because their partner has been having an affair, then they are unlikely to agree immediately to a reduction in their household income. Why should they have fewer holidays or fewer nights out and why should their home have to be sold?
Emmersons family law solicitors deal with this scenario on a daily basis. We always try to deal with the emergency issues first. For example when can each parent see the children and will the mortgage be paid next month?
Things do change throughout the legal pro-cess. A person who may have been in a state of utter shock or have been consumed with anger will start to move on and see things in more practical terms after the initial separa-tion. The reality of the cost of running two homes starts to sink in.
So how can you make ends meet in the medium term? If your mortgage is being paid on a repayment basis then you could both approach your lender to see if this can be converted to an interest only mortgage. This can often release much needed funds.
Then look at luxury items. Do you need to have your dustbin cleaned out? Do you need all of the sports channels on Sky?
Do you need lots of little insurance policies for all of your electrical items?
You should make sure that you contact your council tax department if you are now the only adult living in the house. You will be en-titled to a 25% discount. You should attend to this as soon as your partner leaves the house. You may also be entitled to council tax benefit if your household income has dropped. You may be entitled to child tax credit or work-ing tax credit and you may be entitled to help with nursery fees.
We offer Collaborative Family Law at Emmer-sons Solicitors. (See emmersons-solicitors.co.uk, family law) As part of this process the two of you can reach agreement about shar-ing your incomes in a fair manner until the matrimonial home is sold. Or the property could be re-mortgaged by one party in order to buy out the other’s share. In any event you should each prepare a list of your financial needs, rather than your wants at this stage. If your lists are reasonable it may be possible, using the Collaborative process, to reach a medium term agreement that will work for all of the family.

DAFT AS A BRUSH CHARITABLE TRUSTDaft as a Brush Charitable Trust was founded by Brian Burnie to provide free transport for Cancer outpatients that, be-cause of their illness, have to undergo Chemotherapy and/or Radiotherapy treatment. There is no charge to the patients for the service that entails collecting and transporting the patients in a safe and comfortable environment from where they are living, taking them to where they will be having their treatment and, if required, staying with the patient whilst they have their treatment and then bringing them back home. The patient’s transport is a fleet of brand new Nissan NV 200 seven seater people carriers that are staffed by two persons, a Chauffeur and a Companion. The target/goal is to create a world-class organisation that is capable of transporting 50,000 cancer patients per year.If you are interested in becoming a VOLUNTEER either visit our website www.daftasabrush.org.uk to download an application form or send us a stamped addressed envelope to 3-5 Hood Street, 1st Floor Grainger Chambers, New-castle upon Tyne, NE1 6JQ or call in to our Hood Street office (we are between the Vivienne Westwood shop and the Newcastle Building Society branch on the first floor) to have an informal chat with one of our staff. INDEX OF ADVERTISERSRIGHT UP YOUR STREET CHRISTMAS - IT’S A CRACKER BY RON CLARKE
having that if you don’t want it” and all before we have pulled the turkey apart. Then, long after Christmas Day has been and gone, you still go round the house finding bits of torn hats and discarded cracker gifts in the most unexpected places. Behind the sofa, top of the stairs and other random locations. They have been around for at least 150 years. Devised by an enterprising English confec-tioner who wanted to boost the sale of his sweets. It is now a huge industry and still an integral interval in our festivities. Go on, just a couple more then:
How do snowmen get around? They ride • an icicleWhat is tall and wobbly and stands in the • middle of Paris ? The trifle tower
Happy Christmas.
CHRISTMAS - IT’S A CRACKER!You know you love it really. Many of our fes-tive traditions may be a thing of the past but this is one that still remains as strong as ever. Yes, we may no longer get candlelit carol sing-ers at the door or chestnuts roasting on an open fire but we still like to pull a cracker. You see, I have started already. For some reason, come Christmas Day, we all like to descend into adolescent humour once again and groan at all those really bad jokes. Maybe putting the customary paper hats on our heads starts it all. It is the signal to take it in turns to tell the ones we have all heard before. Who cares? They always raise a laugh. Go on, the old ones are the best:
What happens when you eat too many • Christmas decorations? You gettinsel-itisWhat is furry and minty? A polo bear• What hides in a bakery at Christmas? A • mince spyWhat sort pizza does King Wenceslas • like? Deep, pan, crisp and even.
See, you are laughing already and that is just the start. The best is yet to come. All those mind-boggling gifts that fall from the cracker. Just what we probably never wanted and will never ever use. The awesome array normally includes everything from tiny tape measures and photo-frames the size of a postage stamp to miniscule screwdrivers and little combs.
We still swap them round like some kind of scramble at a car boot sale while muttering “oh yes, that will come in handy, don’t mind

Allen Banks &Plankey Mill
After turning right along the field edge path close to the river we went over the step stile back into the woodland. We then followed through woods and straight ahead following the curved path until just beyond footbridge where we reached a divide. We then took the left path leading up to Staward Pele
On reaching the top we passed a ruined pele tower where the path led us to wonderful views of the trees clothed in their Autumn colours, and the back down to retrace some of walk to Planky Mill and return to Allen Banks on river Allen finishing at the iron bridge near the car park. Today’s walk was in very muddy conditions and the going was heavy, we needed to be back to the coach before it got to dark. A great day had been had by all and some lovely memories, especially the sighting of the young deer we saw running through the woods, we are so lucky have all of this on our doorstep .
Check our website for details of our next walk. http://www.radioramblers.co.uk/
Today’s walk was to Allen Banks and Plankey Mill. It was led by Pam and Ron who had done the re-kky a month earlier. On that occasion the path they were hoping to take was blocked halfway through the 7 mile walk by a large fallen tree and they had to opt for an alternative route. On returning home Ron informed the National Trust who own the land, and he later received an email back from them assuring him that the obstruc-tion would be removed before we arrived with our group. On the day of the walk we were glad to see that all of our group had remembered to change their clocks to the wintertime setting and not turned up an hour early. We also had another new walker in our group.
THE WALK.After the bus had parked just before the low bridge near Ridley Hall, we took the short walk to the main car park at Allen Banks where we followed the riverside path at the back of the car park where the path divides, staying on the west bank rather than crossing the suspension bridge. Beyond the bridge the path tucks beneath Raven Crag and then bends to the right. We soon entered the nature reserve at Briarwood Crag. Here the ancient woodland has seen continu-ous growth dating back to the end of the ice age, some 10,000 years ago. With broadleaved trees like oak, elm, ash and birch this is a haven for wildlife, and 60 species of bird have been re-corded in the valley, these include sparrow hawk, tawny owl, woodcock and song thrush.
On Briarwood Banks we took the footbridge across Kingwood Burn, then turned left to cross the suspension bridge across the river Allen to Plankey Mill.

Right Up Your StreetJESMOND
Issue 69 - April 2012
Right Up Your StreetServing local communities since 2004
We have been producing our community information booklets every month for over 9 years. Starting with Wideopen & Cramlington, adding new areas along the way, we now produce 11 monthly issues.
That gives local businesses complete control over where they advertise. They do not have to commit to mass coverage through a single publication if that does not suit their budget or the geographical area in which they operate.
ALL our booklets are delivered throughletterboxes by professional distribution companies not left in supermarkets hoping passers by will pick them up. This givesguaranteed coverage for advertisers.
Many of our advertisers have been with us a long time, citing the effectiveness of this form of advertising and the open, honest, friendly, straight-forward way in which we operate. That relationship has proved beneficial for all.
