The capital of Russia is Moscow. It has a population of 10,563,038.  It is home to many of Russia’s famous landmarks.

St. Basil’s CathedralSt. Basil’s Cathedral is one of Russia’s most famous landmarks. It was built in 1561 to commemorate the capture of Kazan. The architect who designed it was blinded so he could never build anything to rival its beauty.

Russian Is a Slavic language that is spoken primarily in Russia. Also spoken by many other people in the countries of Ukraine, Latvia and Estonia.

WeatherRussia can get very cold and receive a lot of snow in its long winters.  The climate in Russia varies dramatically. It can be freezing cold in the far north, but very hot in the deserts to the south.  In Russia there are really only two distinct seasons, summer and winter. Spring and Autumn are only short spells of change in between.

OlympicsRussia hosted the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow and will host the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi.  Russian athletes have won a total of 392 medal, 141 of which are gold.  They are second only to the U.S. who have won 489 medals, 183 of which are gold.

The most popular holiday in Russia is New Year's Day. In Russia Christmas is on January 7th. Defender of the Motherland Day is February 23rd. International Women's Day is March 8th.
