What is the program about?

Rural Sustainability will give students the opportunity to learn about the how the

wine industry functions within Central Italy

Students will tour the communities and working wineries, markets and farms with proprietors, managers and agriculturalists to learn about the variety of cultural and economic connections between the local communities and the agricultural and wine industries that sustain them.  Students will also have an opportunity to visit several agriculture and wine museums and libraries including Centro Nazionale Vini Passiti and the Lungarotti Foundation Wine Museum.

Coursework GEOG 491: Rural Sustainability:

tourism, food and wine in Central Italy. Considers aspects of the agricultural landscape, including the

various factors affecting food systems, wine and tourism production in the region hikes and tours, and interpretive mapping projects.

The course also explores the evolution of regional food and wine identities, signature icons, and the broader picture of food and wine production and consumption.

Students will explore sustainable agriculture and agritourism in self-defined, individual projects that will become part of an interpretive plan for the cultural landscapes of the region and their rural surroundings especially as they may be applied at home in British Columbia.

Accommodations• Students will be housed in the Medieval Relais il Borgo Passignano at Lake Trasimeno in the

province of Umbria about 2 hours north of Rome. 

• Students will have access to all areas of the property as a living classroom.

• The hamlet’s outbuildings have been converted into 17 apartments of various sizes. Each apartment is equipped with modern comforts and furnished in simple Umbrian country style. 

Note:•You will be expected to share accommodations with other students; approx. 3 students per apartment.•WiFi is available on the property

Accommodations• You will find a washing

machine, telephone, safe, colour television, internet, fridge with deep freeze, gas stove with electric oven, and a dishwasher in each unit.

• Most apartments have a fireplace, and heating is centralized.

• Each apartment has its own fully modern bathroom with shower.

• The property is also complimented by an authentic wood-burning Forno oven for pizza cooking. Outdoor coal and wood-burning barbeques are also available.
