2 Teamwork New Year 09
Ouch! What a difference a year makes andwhat a challenging time
we are in!
In an earlier edition of Teamwork I referredto the seven lean
years traditionallyfollowed by seven good years as theeconomic
pendulum swings. Having nowhad some eleven relatively good years
Isuppose the adjustment has to be moresevere. It is certainly
hurting, particularly inthe retail side of our business.
However, it is times like these that sort outthe men from the
boys and we are wellplaced for success in this toughenvironment. I
am proud of all members ofour team for helping us to work for
ourcustomers and to get us through the currentworld crisis in the
best shape possible.Sadly there have been some casualties andsome
difficult investment decisions.
However, we have a huge amount to beproud of:-
• In Aerospace, the continuing exceptionalwork for the RAF C-130
Fleet, the recent
award of the TRIOS Contract for us tooversee the support of the
TriStar Fleetuntil it goes out of service, our work forEADS on the
A400M Flying Test Bed,development of our Boeing Tanks and thesteady
growth of Marshall ExecutiveAviation further reinforced by the
officialopening of the Marshall Business AviationCentre, and not to
forget our achievementin bringing the Vulcan onto the CAARegister
and enabling it to perform atAir Shows.
• In MSV the delivery of a world leadingField Hospital to
Norway, our highlyprotected Communication Shelters forSweden and
our delivery of over 1800Load Beds for the Support VehicleContract
for the MoD.
• In Motor Group, the continuing success ofMarshall Leasing,
winning manufacturers’accolades for being their top dealers in
theUK at a number of our depots and theembracing of change and the
need tofocus even more sharply on satisfying theneeds of our
customers.
• In Thermo King and VTR, our great stridesin stabilising and
building up both of thesebusinesses and the knowledge thatMarshall
Thermo King is still the largestThermo King Dealership in
Europe.
I am enormously proud of the work whichthe employees of our
Group have carriedout in contributing to so many
worthwhilecharitable causes in support of so manydeserving and/or
disadvantaged recipients.
It has been a year in which we have madehuge advances in spite
of the economicturmoil. You can all take great pride that weend the
year well placed to make the mostof the celebration of our
Centenary on 20thSeptember and to make 2009 a year toremember for
all of us.
I send you all every best wish forhappiness, health and
prosperity in 2009.

considerable timeunderstanding not just the top levelrequirement
but all the ergonomics of
the layout of the DMS in order to makethem efficient places to
work” said PeterCallaghan.
“Part of our success has also come from ourunderstanding of
shelter based deployablesystems and the experience we havegained
over recent years in building similartypes of solution including a
powerpacktesting facility”, he added.
The DMS will enable the engineers to carryout front line support

Challenge. Aunanimous decision by the judges resulted in the team
beingawarded the RJ Mitchell Trophy, which is named after the
designer ofthe Spitfire which earned legendary status for its
decisive role in theBattle of Britain.
Team Stellar’s system, SATURN, consisted of an integrated system
withone high-flying and one mini UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle), and
aUGV (Unmanned Ground Vehicle) with a control station fusing data
fromvisual, thermal and radar sensors - which gave them the
competitionedge. Team Stellar comprises Stellar Consulting,
Marshall SpecialistVehicles (MSV), Blue Bear Systems, Selex Sensors
and AirborneSystems, TRW Conekt and Cranfield University.
The MOD Grand Challenge is a competition launched by the UK
MoDto allow small, medium and large companies, universities
andresearch and development houses to demonstrate their capability
todesign and deliver vehicles which carry out reconnaissance
tasksautonomously. These tasks had to be done in a hazardous
areawithout requiring soldiers to be sent into harm’s way.
MSV provided the Ground Vehicle, one of the key elements of
theSaturn offering, which was required to enter hazardous
areas, autonomously navigate its way around, and identify likely
hazardsand threats to friendly forces. The competition was carried
out inadverse weather conditions on Salisbury Plain, a factor which
wasinstrumental in reducing the number of competitors that
completedthe challenge.
In designing and delivering the vehicle, the MSV team had to
deployits core skills including; system configuration, vehicle
dynamics, allterrain mobility and robust, rugged engineering.
Integration ofsensors and other electronics, as well as software
for managementand logic systems, were key skills provided by MSV.
These attributeshad to be integrated with semi autonomous
navigation. This required
project management and system design skills to bring the
wholeproject to a successful conclusion.
Peter Callaghan, CEO of MSV said “MSV, through its technology
andcapability centre, Marshall System Design Group (MSDG), set out
touse state-of-the-art capability in the most agile way to achieve
thisdifficult target in a really cost effective way. This is a
system that canbe rapidly taken forward into an operational
environment. Our wholeaim was to show that partnership, agility and
quality can be broughtto a rapid cost effective solution in
operational circumstances. I wouldlike to congratulate the whole of
Team Stellar, especially the threekey people in MSDG, and thank the
MoD for running a reallyinteresting and challenging
competition.”
Out of 23 teams who originally applied to the competition, 7
qualifiedfor the final held over the last 3 days at Copehill Down,
a village onSalisbury Plain specially built by the military for
urban warfaretraining. Vehicles designed and created by the teams
includedfuturistic-looking flying saucers, buggies and
mini-helicopters.
Following the signing of their cooperation agreement
atEUROSATORY in June, MSV and CSI (Camp SupplyInternational) held a
study day to see how the agreementcould be further progressed. The
day was broken up intotwo parts: the first covering each other’s
structure, products and capabilities; and the second, potential
jointworking solutions to deal with future programmes.
Morten Ramberg, Executive VP Sales and Marketing, and Geir Werner
Nielsen, Technical Director, represented CSI; the MSV Team was led
by Tim Otter,Future Business Director, who has responsibility
forthe relationship with CSI, and Rod Goodale, Head ofSales, who is
responsible for day-to-day liaison onjoint sales and projects. A
number of joint programmesand activities were identified and work
started onpreparation of quotations for a number of projects.Joint
marketing activities were identified and theseinclude a joint

Business Aviation Enters Innovative New Era at Marshall
Aerospace
Marshall Aerospace has commenced the structural design and
buildof the engine nacelles for the new advanced light HondaJet;
thecompany was contracted in August by Honda Aircraft Company
toproduce the nacelle.
Through extensive experimentation and testing, Honda
engineersdiscovered an optimal over-the-wing engine mount
configuration thatactually achieves lower drag than the standard
rear-fuselage enginemount design. This innovative and unique design
is to be producedby MA through the structural design and
manufacture of the nacelle. This work will be done at the Cambridge
facility, with the first set duefor delivery to Honda Aircraft
Company in early 2009.
MA was chosen for its ability to design and build a cost
effective, lightweight solution to a demanding schedule. Utilising
its wideengineering experience and expertise, MA has selected the
optimumtechnologies to build a cost effective total supply chain
solution.
“Marshall Aerospace welcomes this opportunity to work with
HondaAircraft Company on such an exciting opportunity,” says
PhilWindred, Head of Aerostructures, “Marshall is applying the
optimumtechnology to deliver the best possible nacelle for HondaJet
as ourcontribution to the success of this plane, which is clearly
one of thebest light jets available on the market.”

A400MEPI TP400EngineTakesOff for First Flight at Cambridge
The TP400 power-plant developed for the A400M by EuroProp
International (EPI) took to the air for the first time on 17th
December 2008 on MarshallAerospace’s C-130K flight test-bed. The
TP400 is installed on the inner left engine mount of the C-130K
which is otherwise powered by three of theusually four Allison T56
turbopropellers. The aircraft took off at 10h44 local time from
Cambridge airfield and lasted one hour and 15 minutes.
MA is conducting the flight test-bed trials for the engine.
During the flight, various flight characteristics such as aircraft
basic handling and TP400 responseat a thrust equivalent to the
maximum power generated by each of the other T56 engines were
tested to satisfaction in several aircraft configurationsup to a
speed of 165kts and an altitutde of 8,000ft. This was a first step
in the aircraft envelope opening. It will allow progress towards
tthe completionof the approximately 50 flight test hours planned to
reach sufficient maturity for the engine itself. Once this is
achieved and sufficient maturity andsatisfactory integration is
also reached for the global propulsion system, it will be able to
subsequently fly on the A400M.
EPI, which ccomprises Rolls Royce, SNECMA,MTUand ITP, started
testing the TP400 in October 2005.More than 2,100 hours of ground
testing have beenperformend with three engines on the ground
testbench. To complete the trials, Marshall Aerospacewas contracted
by Airbus Military to perform theFlying Test Bed trials on a
Lockheed C-130K. Theaircraft was specifically modified to accept
the newengine which develops about twice the power of theC-130K’s
standard T56 engine.
“The successful completion of this first flight of theTP400
engine is a significant step in the A400Mprogramme development”,
says Rafael Tentor,Head of the A400M programme. “This and
thesubsequent flights will comfort us in the performanceof the new
engine itself, as well as its reliability, in areal flying
environment. This objective also appliesto the global propulsion
system”, he added.
