• Choosing to be a chapter officer can be very rewarding and your first step to being a lifelong leader.

Page 4: Running for office cynthia

What Type Of Office Do I Want To Hold?

• There are many different officer opportunities available in every chapter.

• Some chapters follow the traditional rolls, while others take more of a creative style.

• As we evolve as a society, so will our rolls in leadership.

• Most chapters have the positions of:

• President• Vice President• Secretary• Treasurer• Public Relations• Honors In Action Rolls• Chairpersons

Where Do I Begin?

• In order to serve as an officer you need to be an active member in your chapter. (That does not just mean that you paid dues). Being active means you participate in campus activities, community activities, regional activities or international activities.

• Familiarize yourself with the your chapters By-Laws and the International By-Laws. You need to know who we are and why we do what we do!

Page 6: Running for office cynthia

Continued

• Talk to your current and past officers. What were their rolls, how difficult is it to keep up with a full class schedule, etc.

• Talk with chapter members. Do they see you as officer material. Would they help you if you became and officer.

• Talk to your advisors. Would they support you and believe in you as a leader.

• Talk to administration. Do they feel you would make a good role model for others.

Page 7: Running for office cynthia

Continued

• Believe it or not, some of you new Phi Theta Kappans are already thinking…Hey, I can do that!

• You can all do this! If you believe it you can achieve it!

Officer Responsibilities

• Officer responsibilities vary from chapter to chapter. What I’m going to do is give you a generalized case scenario of what your role might look like. Understand that your role will be specific to your By-laws and can interpreted differently.

• I want you to be ready to take on the challenge and succeed!

• EVERYBODY READY???????

Page 9: Running for office cynthia

Example of a Chapter President

• This role can be defined in many ways but most people see this chapter officer position as the person who does it all!

• They are wrong!• The President presides over chapter meetings, helps

create ideas for projects and programs, completes annual reports and DELEGATES responsibilities to others.

• The President is NOT a super hero, they are there to create a TEAM that works together toward the same goals!
