MicromachiningMicromachining is a basic technology of

fabrication of micro-components or features of size in the range of 1 to 999 micrometers.

RUM and its requirementIt is variation of USM in which a tool of

micrometer diameter is rotated at a high speed in addition to conventional USM process.

Using RUM micromachining up to 100 micrometers is possible , which is not possible in conventional USM. In addition to this there are many other advantages of this process over USM and other Non- conventional machining processes which will be discussed further in this presentation.

Process principle and workingRUM is a mechanical material removal

process used to machine hard or brittle materials by ultrasonic impacts (hammering, extraction, abrasion) and grinding action of the diamond abrasives impregnated on the tool
