Ruidoso police are looking for the man who abducted 79-year-old Bessie Ellis between 10 a.m. and noon Thursday. Ellis said she was getting into her car in the parking. lot of the Hospital Auxiliary Thrift Shop at 140 Nob Hill Drive when the man put his arm around her neck and pressed what felt like a gun against her. She had looked around the car before unlock- ing all the doors, but appar- ently he was hiding behind it, she said. "He said, 'Don't do any- thing foolish and you won't get hurt.' I said, 'I'm hurting already,' and he loosed up," Ellis said. The man took her purse and all the money in it and had her drive first to State National Bank on Sudderth Drive to cash a check through the drive-in teller, and then to State National Bank on Highway 70 in Ruidoso Downs to cash anoth- er check. "I pulled into the center lane and pulled way over to the right and told him I could- n't reach out over from the right and said I'd have to step out of the car," Ellis said. "I said 'What name should I put'?' and he hesitated. He almost told me. I stood up and mouthed to (the teller) in the bank to help me, and she didn't get the message and started talking about me tutoring her daugh- ter." Ellis continued to mouth that she needed help but the teller put the money through before she got the message. Then she told Ellis she needed to go into the bank to sign a card, but the abductor grabbed the money and told her to drive.
