Fetch ListThe Dubuque Regional Humane Society is proud to be a recipient of the Hill’s Food,
Shelter & LoveTM program. We feed all of our pets Hill’s Science Diet, delivered fresh
each week thanks to the generosity of Theisen’s Home Farm Auto.
If you’d like to make a gift to the DRHS, please consider one (or more) of the following:Monetary Donation (tax deductible): Last year $0.80 of every dollar donated
went directly to animal care and community outreach programming.
Gift Cards: Gift cards to stores where we can purchase supplies are always
appreciated! (i.e., PETCO, PetSmart, Target, Theisen’s, Wal-Mart, White Front Feed)
Cat Supplies: Non-clumping clay kitty litter, kitten replacement formula
Dog Supplies: Small, medium and large Kongs, peanut butter, food dispensing
toys, towels and blankets
Critter Room: Critter food (rabbit, Guinea Pig, rat, hamster, gerbil), aspen or pellet
bedding, hay feeders, small food dishes, critter exercise balls
Many thanks to the Sandy Hook Tavern for choosing the DRHS as the
recipient of their June 12 BIKE NIGHT event. They held a 50/50 cash
raffle for our shelter pets!
Million Cat ChallengeThe Dubuque Regional Humane Society is participat-
ing in a national shelter-based campaign called the
MILLION CAT CHALLENGE which is focused on saving
the lives of one million cats in North America over the
next five years. The core strategy of the campaign in-
cludes five key initiatives that offer practical choices
to reduce euthanasia and increase live outcomes for
shelter cats. For more information visit their website
at www.millioncatchallenge.org.
The MILLION CAT CHALLENGE advocates five techniques
to improve outcomes for shelter cats.
1. IMPLEMENT MANAGED ADMISSIONS
Slow down the flow of incoming cats by requiring an
appointment for surrender and only accepting new
intakes on specific days. The DRHS implemented Owner
Surrender by Appointment in June. This initiative has
worked very effectively for shelters nationwide. See
page five for more information.
2. OFFER INTAKE ALTERNATIVES
Cat owners often surrender their cats because
of behavioral or financial issues, including food
and vet costs. Providing free or low-cost vet care
or food donations is often less expensive than
sheltering a cat and ensures the animal remains in its
home.
The DRHS has established a free Pet Pantry for families
experiencing financial difficulties. See page five for more
information.
3. FOCUS ON PROVIDING QUALITY CARE
When shelters offer a bigger space and enrichment,
cats are healthier, happier and more adoptable. The
DRHS utilizes our large cat condos whenever possible.
Our other cat enclosures are expandable by opening up
retractable panels, with a separate litter box area, to al-
low our cats as much space as possible. A scratching pad
and enrichment toys are provided for all shelter cats.
4. REMOVE BARRIERS TO ADOPTION
Expensive adoption fees make it harder for families to
adopt. The DRHS reduced our cat and kitten adoption
fees effective January 2. Cats over one year are now only
$25 and kittens under a year are $50.
5. PRACTICE “RETURN TO FIELD”
This initiative advocates returning strays to their origi-
nal neighborhoods after they are evaluated for health
and altered. There is currently no “Trap-Neuter-Release”
(TNR) program in the Tri-State area, which requires the
cooperation of government, shelters and community
members.
From the MailbagIt was late afternoon and my daughter Jadie and I ventured to the
Dubuque Regional Humane Society in search of a puppy. Little did
we know that we would soon fall in love with Franky, a 6-year-old
American Bulldog/Blue Heeler mix. The look in his eyes said it all,
“Adopt me!” So, as we left that day, I felt that Franky truly was the
dog we needed in our family. We were hooked—line and sinker.
We pondered for a few days just to make sure there was no conflict
with him and our other dog, Jake. We had them meet. It was a
success and today they are best of friends. Franky even shares his
bed with Jake. So on March 11, 2015, we got to adopt Franky into
our family. The DRHS is the BEST! The animals are treated with the
utmost respect and care. We are so blessed to have Franky in our
lives and we are happy to give him a forever home. Franky truly is
a rock star! Terri
