Uni supporters joined the 1st Grade players in the traditional after match club song rendition in the middle of the
pitch on Saturday when 1st Grade broke their finals hoodoo in progressing to our first Grand Final since 1977.
This gesture showed to all 22 players of 1st Grade that the Club is not only behind them but part of them as well.
1st Grade showed what they are capable of all season in defeating Cottesloe 19-18 tin a tense but confidence building
victory. Cottesloe cam into the game on the back of a 14 game winning run and full of confidence. They had just
pipped us for the Club Championship and had great depth. They came off a semi final victory against Associates
whilst we had struggled against Nedlands in the major semi
But the character of this team showed through. Uni dominated territory and possession and held a tight defensive
line. Alan Kingsley’s boot kept us in the battle with several penalty goals but we trailed at half time 8-6. Alan
kicked us ahead and when Andrew Finn crossed we led 16-11.
Cottesloe held their nerve and we held our line until several minutes form the end Cott crashed over under the posts.
With the conversion the game seemed gone at 16-18.
The last play of the day it seemed as Uni kicked off. A penalty at the restart against Cottesloe saw Alan Kingsley
calmly convert the 35 metre shot into the sun and wind to secure a famous victory and march us into a well deserved
Grand Final.
After finishing 2nd on the season ladder and losing narrowly to Nedlands on both encounters during the home and
away season this premiership is there for the taking. The Club encourages all Uni supporters to get to the games on
the weekend—wear your green and gold and cheer the boys to victory!

4TH GRADE SEEKING THREE IN A ROW Three in a row…. Reaching three grand finals in the last three years is something to be proud of stand tall
and pat the guy next to you on the back and say well done old chap (Washy).
The feeling amongst the ranks was one of confidence, not just in themselves performing, but in the whole
group stepping up from what was an average and disappointing performance against Neddies the week
before and getting the job done.
The game pattern was set early with Uni promoting a fast wide attacking style using their pace and skills to
gain inroads into the West's defence. Sometimes haphazard in style and sometimes sublime, led by
Robbie’s impetuous flicks from scrum half, the backs hit their straps early running direct, hard lines and
only through gritty defence and a few missed penalties prevented an early dominance in the scoreline
which would of put the game to bed. Ultimately something had to give and some strong running by Kang
on the right wing and a clever piece of law stretching by the legend Washy, enabled quick ball for a
backline move with Cogsy hitting the line at pace and leaving an easy stroll over for Paddy on the left
wing.
Although continuing to play with confidence, the scoreline stagnated and frustration began as Uni crossed
the line again but was pulled back by the ref for something illegal (it all looked good from the bottom of a
ruck). Then towards the end of the first half West's strung together an excellent passage of play interlinking
in the forwards and running some good direct lines up the guts and in their first attacking move of the half
scored a try and conversion to finish the first half 7-5 up.
The second half was a similar story. Uni started as they had played for the majority of the first half and
focused on building more phases of play. For the first 20 minutes of this half everything went to plan, Uni
continued to dominate the wider encounters and although the backs were making the inroads it took the
forwards to step into the back line to help them finish. Similar to the first try, a phase or two of play from
right to left ended with Mousse crashing it in, supported by Franklyn to set up quick clean ball that
whizzed back to the right hand side where the Uni boys were lining up. For the second game in a row
Waddo stuck his hand up to show his acceleration, pace and guile in beating three players and steam-
rolling over the line for Uni's second try.
Not to be shown up, the backs took a bit of a front to this demonstration of skills by the forwards and
Knuckles decided to produce the mystery ball for Cogs to burst onto and take the West defence by
surprise, not just by the speed and disguise of the move but also by the fact that Cogsy was wearing the ball
as a hat for at least 5 seconds before bringing the ball down and placing it over the line in front of the posts
for Kang to convert.

17-7 up with 6 minutes to go saw the first drop of intensity by the Uni team all game. The West's team
countered attacked some of our badly placed, and at times unlucky, kicks very effectively and the second
time in the game they attacked our line and managed to interlink with some excellent rugby to get over for
their second converted try of the game. With West's fired up, the last few minutes were intense and a dubi-
ous decision left West's with a penalty 40 metres out to the left and a chance to draw the game… with the
last kick of full time they kicked it through the posts to level and pushed the game into extra time.
Uni began dominating possession and pushing wide for the breakthrough which led to a penalty conversion
by Cogs and then a swift backline move after multiple phases where Johno went over in the corner. An-
other Cogs penalty left Uni 28-17 up with about 5 minutes to play… could it happen again? After Willo
taking a right hook in front of the linesman, not retaliating, then getting sent to the bin you could see why
the players were a bit miffed and lost a bit of concentration. West's got a roll on, drove up through the guts
of the Uni defence to score under the posts in what was their third attack of the game inside with Uni 22.
However, there was no repeat to the full time comeback and with a couple of scrummage collapses to en-
sure some loss of time and another one of the many Fab ball turnovers, the final result ended 28-24 to Uni.
Well done (especially Washy) and well deserved. Good luck to everyone next week.

U/18 COLTS TO CAP FINE YEAR
The U/18 Colts will meet Wests in the Grand Final that brings to three the number of UWA teams seeking
a premiership. This has been the best team ll year and the Minor Premiership proved that. This was
reinforced by the 33-22 disposal of 2nd placed Perth Bayswater who went don in the final to Wests.
The try and points scoring talent of the backs is built off a hard working tight five led by nuggetty hooker
Adam Negri. The back row is fit, fast to break downs and industrious. The pace out wide of Kurt Penney,
Jono Ashton, Nick Wolman and company brought

UWA WOMEN
UWA could not make it a fairytale ending as they were defeated by Wanneroo 0-18 in the final. Last
weeks elimination semi final win over Kalamunda of 22-10 was the first finals victory for the womens
team and finished off the most successful season in the girls 10 year history.
UWA supporters are very proud of the fact that no other Club has entered a women’s team every year as
we have.
