Burn wound is probably the most devastating of all the wounds – physically, psychologically, socially and economically. Early, expeditious burn wound closure is crucial for survival of patients with large burn wounds. After successful initial management, burn wound infection leading to systemic sepsis is the single most major cause of death in burn patients – especially in India. 11 Million is the approximate number of burn injuries and about 2,65,000 deaths in a year. The demand exceeding the supply. Biosynthetic skin substitutes are extremely expensive and unaffordable for most of the burnt patients in our country. The availability is also uncertain. Then the only alternative available is Skin Allografts obtained from a human donor. The skin can be removed without disfiguring the body within 6 hours of death and can be stored up to 3 years. The skin, just like the cornea (Eye), does not require any matching. It is essential to understand the social relevance of this noble act of giving a gift of life even after death. The act of skin donation after death can help save a life ; most often a young woman of 25 years or may give lease of life to a young man.The facility for skin banking should ideally be available in every medical college hospital as maximum numbers of burnt patients seek treatment at these institutions. We should all be an example by donating so that others can follow. Rtn Y. S. Jagadish Dist.Chairman, Polio plus spoke on the success of its eradication programme. He said the amount spent on it, though very large, is worth it. Sadly due to its failure in two countries, a huge amount has to be spent to finish it once for all. Rtn PDG Gulam Vahanvathy explained about various levels of donations. He wanted the endowment fund to reach at least 20 to 25 million dollars so that interest earned by it will cover all the Grant expenses. Any donation to Polio plus is equally matched by Bill Gates Foundation. If 25% of TRF collection comes from large donors 55% comes from donors who give $100 and $500. Rtn PDG Ananth stressed the importance of stewardship at every stage of the project. Larger the amount greater is the need for stewardship. Rtn PDG Dr.P. Narayana said the club should not assume the need of the community and decide the project. After a survey, meeting with local people, a project of their choice should be chosen. Partners should be chosen carefully. Rtn PDG Ramesh gave a detailed account of steps involved in planning a project right from survey of the community up to stewardship at the end. The panel discussion by Dr P Narayana, Dr.R.N.Bhat, Dr.Ashok and moderated by Rtn Sudheer concluded that junk food and lack of exercise are the root cause of all the problems. Dr. Sathishchandra, WHO officer, explained with statistics how polio has been eradicated.
