The pace of this development is continuing to accelerate and has changed the nature of what we think of as embedded systems. It is hardly possible to imagine an embedded device that is not somehow connected to a local network and ultimately to the Internet. This allows not only remote control and monitoring but also the collection of staggering amounts of data. Because of the importance of this development, which is expected to soon hit more than 30 billion connected devices worldwide, we have created this new section devoted to the development and security issues of the IoT. We will be bringing contributions with our traditional standards of high technical detail and relevance for developers seeking the latest in innovation and insight into the issues affecting this field. The new section will cover all aspects affecting development and deployment of IoT technology with special emphasis on perhaps the most challenging factor—security.
