EDITORIALSummer’s sounds

It must have been her febrile imagination that madeKamala Das, one of India’s foremost poets, com-pare Calcutta’s harsh April sun to a nourishing,

fruity drink. “What is this drink but/ The April Sun,squeezed/ Like an orange in/ My glass?”, Das won-ders in her poem, Summer in Calcutta, apparentlyreminiscing about a day in Chaitra. To the less poeti-cally-minded Calcuttan, April, borrowing the wordsof T.S. Eliot, is, indeed, the cruellest month. It turnsthe sun into a scorching orb from which the ideal pro-tection can only be a room with its curtains drawn, itswalls chiaroscuroed, lulling the parched soul into theblissful realm of bhaat-ghum. Of course, the siestacocks a snook at the revered laws of Bengali excep-tionalism. This form of repose — a short nap — iscommon across cultures and landscapes, ranging fromsouthern Europe, the Mediterranean, the Middle Eastto the Indian subcontinent and China. Bengalis evenhave domestic competition in this sphere. The Goanshave turned siesta into a fine — philosophical — en-gagement by fusing it with the concept of susegad —its etymological roots lie with the Portuguese word, sossegado — a celebration of quietude, stillness, un-hurriedness. Except that the siesta is in trouble.

Some years ago, a survey found that 60 per centof Spaniards — they adopted and nurtured the Romantradition of resting during the Sixth Hour or hora sex-ta — did not indulge in the siesta. Eyes have stayedwide open at noon around the world since then withthe predations of Work From Home, heightened anx-iety induced by the pandemic, and shifts in labour cul-tures. In fact, The New York Times had reported thedeath of the siesta way back in 2006 when Spain’sgovernment proscribed the midday break for its work-ers.

Now new-age technology is helping people dozeoff, once again. Spotify, the audio-streaming and me-dia service provider with an estimated 180 millionpaid subscribers, has a collection of ‘summer sounds’to facilitate deep slumber. Even a cursory examinationof these notes would reveal their disproportionate em-phasis on melody. And this lays bareone of the ironiesof modernity’s relationship with the distinct aural reg-ister of each season. Our cacophonous lives — Cal-cutta is among the 15 global cities that is subjected toextreme sound pollution — have made it difficult forus to distinguish between noise and sound and, worse, appreciate the importance of existing, and extinct, soundscapes that are central to the architecture of ourlives and lived spaces. This is not to say that ethno-graphies of city life and living have ignored the auraldimension.

The RecallThe night was dark whenshe went away, and theslept. The nightis dark now, andI call for her,"Come back,my darling; theworld is asleep; and no onewould know, if you camefor a moment while stars aregazing at stars." She wentaway when the trees were inbud and the spring wasyoung..

China's economy slowsdown, unemployment rises

China's economy has slowed down, with consumption slumping and un-employment rising partly due to the

COVID-19 lockdowns in Shanghai and therestrictions on private enterprise, media re-ports said.

The International Monetary Fundcut its growth forecast for China to 4.4 percent, down from 4.8 per cent, citing risksfrom Beijing's strict zero-COVID policy. This is well below China's official forecastof around 5.5 per cent.

China is seeing deep foreign capi-tal outflows as doubts increase regarding itsbasic investability. Investors are ditchingChina at an unprecedented scale as a cock-tail of political and business risks, and ris-ing interest rates elsewhere, making theworld's second-biggest economy a less at-tractive place to keep their money. Chinawitnessed $17.5 billion worth of portfoliooutflows last month, an all-time high, ac-cording to the most recent data from the In-stitute of International Finance (IIF),Hongkong Post reported.

According to experts, China'seconomy is hitting a great wall as its econ-omy slowed sharply in March - consump-tion slumped for the first time in more thana year, while unemployment in 31 majorcities surged to a record high. Some econo-mists are even talking about the possibilityof a recession this quarter, as Beijing looksdetermined to hold on to its zero-COVIDpolicy despite the hefty price.

China is seeing deep foreign capi-tal outflows as doubts increase regarding itsbasic investability.

As per the reports by HongkongPost, data from the Chinese governmentalso showed a record bond-market retreatby foreign investors in recent months.Overseas investors offloaded a net 35 bil-lion yuan ($5.5 billion) of Chinese govern-ment bonds in February, the largest month-ly reduction on record, according to ChinaCentral Depository and Clearing. China'ssupport for the Russian invasion of Ukraine

was clearly the catalyst for capital to leaveChina, say analysts. According to the re-port, possible factors for investors to sellinclude concerns about the geopoliticalrisks of investing in China, broader eco-nomic uncertainty, and China's marketyield advantage over the US bonds is wan-ing. International investors also pulledmore than $7 billion from onshore Chineseequities through the Hong Kong market inMarch. Some international fund managerswere concerned about holding Chinese as-sets after Western countries imposed tougheconomic sanctions on Russia.

In addition, with Russian assets inthe US, Japan and Europe effectivelyfrozen, the Russian central bank is likely toreduce its holdings of Chinese bonds to

raise cash and repay foreign debt. The war in Ukraine has also height-

ened concerns that China could use militaryforce against Taiwan, triggering a massiveflight of capital from the Asian island. Butgeopolitical tension is not the only reasonbehind the exodus. The rate hike in theUnited States and China's strict COVID-re-lated lockdowns have also played a role inscaring investors. The flight was notewor-thy because authorities had avoided majoroutflows in previous market stress events, including COVID-19, during the epidemicand the trade war with the United States. The pandemic is not the only reason behindChina's slowdown.

A lot of the country's current eco-nomic pain can be traced back to the

sweeping regulatory crackdown on the pri-vate sector, which was unleashed by Presi-dent Xi Jinping in 2020. There are fearsthat the government will continue to clampdown on sectors ranging from education totechnology this year. The crackdown re-sulted in a steep sell-off in Chinese stocksworldwide. Some of the money flowing outof China may have gone into US dollar as-sets, while there is also a notable switchfrom China to India, according to marketobservers, Hongkong Post reported.

China's rigid 'Zero-COVID' policyled to the complete shutdown of scores ofcities and towns, including Shanghai, itsports and airports is now halting manufac-turing and trade in the nation, causing a dipin the country's economy.

Bus "Do" Minute!Last week during my trip

to meet my friend, I spentsome time with her 12

year old. The super cute 12 yearold was trying to make mecomfortable. "Should I turn onAlexa for you?', "Should I or-der something on Swiggy","lets post our pic on Snapchat","why are you using Dictionary, just google". After this ren-dezvous, I started observingyoungsters around me mainlyGen Z (between 8-23 yearsold).

Youth and teens today areaccustomed to 'instant'ification. From binge watching all theepisodes of favorite series onNetflix to be the most famousstudent in the college, fromscoring maximum goals in amatch to getting promotion atwork, from being the best gui-tarist in the band to be the bestplayer in 'fortnite', they wanteverything promptly.

Inka bus chale tu nokari keche haftoon mein hi CEO bannjaye! (If in their hands, theywant to be CEO after 6 weekson the job!) The food prefer-ences are also instantaneous. They just want everything eas-ily in their "do" (two) minute.

These days when kids arestuck in 'Ghost of Tsushmia',they very conveniently search'walk throughs' on YouTubeand quickly move to the next

level rather than troubling theirbig brains to look for the solu-tion.

You tell them to 'wait', theywill ask you 'why'? What theydon't realize is ki do minutemein tu maggi bhi nahin banti!(Maggi also takes more than 2minutes). Even Zomato takesminimum 10 minutes to deliv-er! Every single thing needs pa-tience, time, effort, dedicationand perseverance. Nothinggreat can be achieved withoutgoing through the required pa-tience drill.

But it's not their fault. ThisGen Z is born in unsteadinessof the modern world whichworks on higher, faster and fur-ther mode. They have beenbombarded with the options. Ascompared to having access to'Duck Tales' only on Sundaymornings to having a dedicated'cartoon network' to access towatch anything to everythingon OTT platforms on any

screen near them, their brainshave been rewired to be impa-tient!

It's not only Gen Z which isfull of impatience. In fact, theprevious few generations hadtheir share too. I guess we allare on lower patience levels ascompared to our predecessors. But 'Zoomers' definitely are thefastest ones to hang up! This in-stant gratification attitude isn'tvery healthy. It can lead to rest-lessness, anxieties, insomnia, increased irritation levels andmore.

Quietly sitting with your-self for 10 minutes withoutturning on the earplugs, a quickmeditation session once in awhile without being withfriends, open mind conversa-tions with parents without con-sidering it as lecture can dowonders. A hiking trip wherethere is no access to internet, re-visiting old times with familyand friends without any agendaand without any rush can actu-ally help in building patiencelevels.

If you've managed to readthis without losing your pa-tience or focus, good job! Bus'do' minute aur. Always remem-ber you control your level ofpatience and it's up to you tohelp yourself.

Trump says he has no plans torejoin Twitter after Musk dealFormer President Donald Trump

said Monday that he has no in-tention of rejoining Twitter even

if his account is reinstated followingElon Musk's agreement to buy the so-cial media giant for roughly 44 billion.

Trump told Fox News that he willinstead focus on his own platform,Truth Social, which has been mired inproblems since its launch earlier thisyear. "I am not going on Twitter. I amgoing to stay on Truth," Trump wasquoted telling the network. "I hopeElon buys Twitter because he'll makeimprovements to it and he is a goodman, but I am going to be staying onTruth." Trump was barred from majorsocial media platforms after the dead-ly Jan. 6 insurrection, with Twitter cit-ing the "risk of further incitement ofviolence".

The decision denied him themegaphone he had used to generatemedia attention and speak directly tohis followers, which had been integralto his political rise. At the time, theformer president had roughly 89 mil-lion followers on Twitter alone.

Musk, the world's wealthiest per-son and a self-described free-speechabsolutist, had said he wanted to buyand privatize Twitter because he be-lieved it wasn't living up to its poten-tial as a free speech platform. It raisedquestions about whether he might re-instate Trump's account as the formerpresident lays the groundwork for an-

other White House run in 2024. Trumphas continued to spread lies about his2020 election defeat in speeches andstatements since leaving office, and itis unclear how Musk would approachthose statements if Trump were ever toreturn to the site.

In recent weeks, Musk has voiceda number of proposed changes for thecompany, including relaxing its con-tent restrictions, and said he would be"very reluctant" to delete content andcautious of permanent bans. After be-ing kicked off social media platforms,Trump launched his own social mediaapp and sued Twitter, Facebook andGoogle's YouTube, claiming he andother conservatives had been wrong-fully censored, even though posts byconservative commentators are rou-tinely the most widely shared.

On Monday, he said he welcomedMusk's purchase and told Fox Newshe didn't see Twitter as his own prod-uct's competition. "Truth Social willbe a voice for me," he said. "And that'ssomething nobody else can get."

Harvard University earmarks USD100mn for legacy of slavery fund

Harvard University Presi-dent Lawrence Bacow an-nounced that he has ac-

cepted the recommendations of acommittee studying universities'ties to slavery and has set aside$100 million to continue studyingand documenting that issue.

"As the committee's reportpowerfully documents, Harvard'shistory includes extensive entan-glements with slavery. The reportmakes plain that slavery in Amer-ica was by no means confined tothe South. It was embedded in the

fabric and the institutions of theNorth, and it remained legal inMassachusetts until the Supreme

Judicial Court ruled it unconstitu-tional in 1783," Bacow said in apress release on Tuesday. The

Harvard president said slaveryplayed a significant part in theuniversities' institutional history.

"Enslaved people worked onour campus supporting our stu-dents, faculty, and staff, includingseveral Harvard presidents. Thelabor of enslaved people both farand near enriched numerousdonors and, ultimately, the institu-tion," he said. Bacow noted thatsome faculty supported and dis-seminated bogus positions thatgave a scholarly imprimatur toracial superiority and racism.

Even after the 13th Amendmentabolished slavery in the UnitedStates, Harvard continued a slateof discriminatory practices thatseverely constrained the numberand presence of African Ameri-cans on campus. "Consequently, Ibelieve we bear a moral responsi-bility to do what we can to addressthe persistent corrosive effects ofthose historical practices on indi-viduals, on Harvard, and on oursociety," he said. Bacow ex-plained that the $100 million willcreate an endowed "Legacy of

Slavery Fund" that will continueresearching and memorializingthat history, working with descen-dants of Black and Native Ameri-can people enslaved at Harvard,as well as their broader communi-ty. In addition to Harvard, a num-ber of other educational institu-tions in the United States, includ-ing Georgetown, Brown, Colum-bia, University of Virginia and thePrinceton Theological Seminary, have set aside financial resourcesto make amends for participationin the system based on slavery.

Vaccination: The Key to Preventing Influenza Infections amongst At-risk Adults: Experts

handigarh, April 27, 2022: India witnessed 778,070 cases of severe acute respiratory infection in 2020 between April and June alone.[iii] Fortunately, the country has historically overcome various infectious diseases with the Chelp of vaccinations. Influenza, one such vaccine-preventable disease, is a seasonal viral respiratory infection that

spreads easily from person to person. In India, seasonal influenza or ‘flu’ outbreaks are typically seen during the monsoons or peak winter, with slight regional variations. Influenza affects people of all ages. Health workers and people with comorbid conditions, like diabetes, kidney, heart or liver diseases, asthma, blood disorders, and other immunocompromised individuals are at higher risk of complications.[iv] Prevention is thus key. Vaccines for children as well as adults including those at-risk are the most effective strategy to avoid influenza infection and related adverse effects. A flu shot reduces the risk of flu-related complications by around 70% to 90%,[v] and WHO thus recommends annual influenza vaccination with the latest prevailing flu strain, especially for all high-risk groups. While flu shots for children are far more common, the uptake of influenza vaccination amongst adults, even those with comorbid conditions like diabetes and hypertension, is low.[vi] For instance, even in a country like the United States, adult influenza vaccination coverage was 46.1% (during 2017-18)[vii] and similarly, India too has a long way to go in increasing immunization uptake, more so for adults with underlying conditions. For instance, influenza vaccinated patients with diabetes saw a 56% reduction in any complications as compared with unvaccinated patients with diabetes, along with a 54% reduction in hospitalizations.[viii] With India considered to be the diabetic capital of the world – with more than 74 million people with diabetes – enhanced vaccination coverage would greatly benefit the population. Commenting on the need for increased influenza vaccination uptake, Dr SK Jindal, Medical Director Jindal Clinics, Chandigarh, Former Professor & Head, Pulmonary Medicine, PGIMER, Chandigarh said, “In Chandigarh, there are roughly 60 to 70 cases of influenza every season. Of these, about 50 to 60% with mild to severe complications had chronic conditions. Vaccines are the safest and most effective option available to avoid such infections.” Dr Jejoe Karankumar, Director, Medical Affairs at Abbott commented, “At Abbott, we are committed to helping people stay healthy at every stage of their lives. Raising awareness about the need for annual influenza vaccination not just for children, but also at-risk adults, is key to ensuring greater protection against infection across the population. To ensure ease and convenience while getting a flu shot, flu vaccination services are also offered in the comfort of people’s homes. Influenza is a vaccine-preventable illness, and the benefits and simplicity of prevention outweigh the complications of illness later.” Influenza strains mutate every year, with WHO constantly updating their guidelines on the virus strain currently in circulation. It is important for not just children but adults, especially those with underlying conditions, to get their annual influenza vaccination, in consultation with their doctor. The current global context also continues to create confusion for many, given the similar symptoms of influenza and other respiratory infections – including fever, cough, shortness of breath, fatigue, headache, runny nose, muscle pain and more. It is important to note that COVID-19 vaccination will not protect against the flu, and vice versa. Flu vaccines and COVID-19 vaccines can be given at the same time and do not impact the safety profile or effectiveness of the other.

DC, KKR seek momentumto revive IPL campaigns

AGENCYMUMBAI, APR 27

Delhi Capitals will look to put the 'no-ball' controversy behind and gainmuch needed momentum against an-other side seeking course correction, the Kolkata Knight Riders, in the In-dian Premier League here on Thurs-day.

Delhi suffered a 15-run lossagainst Rajasthan Royals, a gamemarred by a no ball controversy overa high full toss that resulted in a onematch ban for assistant coach PravinAmre.

Head coach Ricky Pontingwatched the tight finish in quarantineand felt helpless. Now he is back withthe team and is confident of findingmomentum which will allow his play-ers to play to their potential.

Delhi Capitals are currently sev-enth on the points table with threewins in seven outings. KKR areplaced eighth having lost their lastfour games.

With the Delhi batting line-upcomprising David Warner, PrithviShaw, Rishabh Pant and Powell,KKR's varied attack has to be onguard to stop the rampage.

Warner, after striking three backto back fifties, faltered against theRoyals and would need itching to playanother impactful knock. Ditto forShaw, who needs to convert his startsinto big scores.

Delhi's latest option at numberthree, Sarfaraz Khan, also failed and itremains to be seen whether he isbenched or not.

Pant will need to take greater re-sponsibility along with the likes ofall-rounders Lalit Yadav, ShardulThakur and Axar Patel.

Pant can single-handedly turn anygame, but he hasn't played to his po-tential and come Thursday at theWankhede, where the tracks havehelped batters, the skipper would lookto come good. Add to it, Powell's six-hitting prowess, Delhi have all thenecessary firepower. Delhi's bowlinghas fared well, but will need to forgetthe hammering at the hands of JosButtler. Khaleel Ahmed has been tak-

ing wickets upfront and has beencomplemented by Mustafizur Rah-man, who can also be effective at thedeath. While Kuldeep Yadav has re-deemed himself, the other spinnersAxar and Lalit have also played theirparts to perfection. The trio has com-bined 20 wickets and their 12 overswould be vital.

Meanwhile, KKR need to gettheir combination right and the bat-ters, including skipper Iyer, will haveto put up an improved show.

Shreyas failed in the last gameand so did the opening pair of SamBillings and Sunil Narine. If they con-tinue with the same openers, the twowould need to give an aggressivestart.

Great players go through phases like this:RCB skipper Faf du Plessis backs Kohli

PUNE: Virat Kohli's form for the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 remainsa cause for concern but the batting stalwart was backed by RCB skipper Faf du Plessis who on Tuesday said 'great play-ers go through phases like this'.

Chasing a 145-run target, Bangalore's top-order failed again as they lost the four wick-ets for 58 runs and failed to recover from that. Talking about Kohli's lean patch, the RCBcaptain said that great players go through the rough patches and they are going to back himto turn things around. Kohli was dismissed on just 9 runs while attempting a pull shot buthe managed to get an edge and got caught. The batter has been going through a very roughpatch this season with just 128 runs in just 9 matches. "We have to try to change the battingorder and see if that works. We have to try and play positively. That's what we discussed af-ter the last game, trying to get the best out of him [on Kohli]. Great players go through thesethings. Great players go through phases like this. We wanted him to get in straight away sothat he doesn't sit on the sidelines and think about the game.

Plan was tokeep it on agood length, says RR'sKuldeep SenPUNE: Rajasthan Roy-als’ bowler Kuldeep Sensaid that he intended onbowling good lengths inthe match against theRoyal Challengers Ban-galore at the Maharash-tra Cricket Association(MCA) Stadium on Tues-day.Kuldeep picked up a four-wicket haul against RCBand helped the Ra-jasthan Royals’ to over-take the Gujarat Titans(GT) and Sunrisers Hy-derabad (SRH) to the topof the table. The pacer said that hegot an idea of the pitch’snature after watchingRCB bowlers Josh Ha-zlewood and MohammedSiraj."I missed the last fewmatches with an injury atthe nets, it’s coming upwell now. Watching thefirst innings and the waySiraj and Harshal bowled,I realized that the ballwas stopping from agood length, so Sanjutold me to hit the deckhard, the plan was tokeep it on a good length. We didn’t want to con-cede easy runs," saidKuldeep Sen in a post-match presentation.Kuldeep scalped the all-important wickets of RCBskipper Faf du Plessisand hard-hitting batterGlenn Maxwell. After thetwo wickets, he foundhimself on a hat-trick, buthe couldn’t achieve themilestone.Coming to the match,four-wicket haul byKuldeep Sen and an un-beaten knock of 56 runsby Riyan Parag poweredRajasthan Royals to vic-tory by 29 runs over Roy-al Challengers Bangaloreat MCA stadium. RCBwere never really on thechase, and in the end, they were bundled out for115 in 19.3 overs.

GLAMOURGLAMOURAamna Sharif to headline new web show 'Aadha Ishq'

ctor Aamna Sharif is all set to come up with a new web show titled 'Aadha Ishq'. Directed Aby Nandita Mehra and produced by 24

Frames Media, the romantic drama is set against the picturesque backdrops of Gulmarg, Srinagar and Mussoorie, and captures a turbulent love story rife with major twists and turns.

The show also sheds light on modern-day romance and complicated human relationships.

Excited about the project, Aamna said, "Aadha Ishq deals with the repercussions of entangled relationships, and to portray the trials and tribulations that my character Roma goes through in the show, was a challenging task. However, essaying an emotionally inclined character has been a learning experience of a lifetime for me. I'm excited for the audience to see this unusually thought-provoking tale of love, pepped up with drama and beautiful locations. Looking forward to the show."

'Aadha Ishq', which also features Gaurav Arora, Pratibha Ranta, Kunal Roy Kapur and Suchitra Pillai in key roles, will premiere exclusively on Voot in May.

Was scared to refuse projectsto not upset seniors: Shreyas

here was a phase in Shreyas Talpade's career when he featured in several multi-starrer comedies and the actor says The did those films to keep working rather than "sit on the fence"

and wait for the right project to come his way. Talpade made his debut in 2005 with the acclaimed drama "Iqbal". The Nagesh Kukunoor film, along with the maker's next, "Dor", established Talpade as a bankable performer, especially in the independent cinema space. Though the actor further explored the space with Shyam Benegal's 2008 comedy-drama "Welcome to Sajjanpur", he soon moved to multi-starrer comedies like the "Golmaal" series, "Paying Guests", "Aagey Se Right" among others. In an interview with news agency, the 47-year-old actor said some of his earlier choices reflect the phase of the industry when biopics or big dramas were not in vogue. "When I look back, I don't regret it. But today I am wiser. I might say no to something I don't like or don't want to do. I had to take those chances. I couldn't be sitting on the fence and thinking, 'Now something will come and I will do it'. Now, we have content-oriented films and biopics which are loved by people. It was a different time when I started my career," he said. Asked how his career came to be dotted with big budget and mid-sized comedies, Talpade said it finds roots in him not belonging to the industry and thus being largely unaware of how to navigate it. "I came from a typical middle class Maharastraian family with no film connection whatsoever. So, suddenly, when you're thrown in this big world of Hindi film industry, where there are people approaching you, appreciating you, for a moment you tend to get I won't say lost but confused, as to what to do," he added. Before Talpade made a switch to comedies, the actor recalled how he was asked to audition for a comedy franchise by a director, who told him that his audition was nice, "but I had a serious image so he was apprehensive" Talpade said the perception got him "worried and upset" but things soon changed when he got a call from Subhash Ghai for his production "Apna Sapna Money Money", a comedy also starring Suniel Shetty, Ritesh Deshmukh, Anupam Kher among others.

There's a set audience that comes back for sequels, says Tara Sutaria

tarring in successive sequels is not a calculated move for actor Tara Sutaria, who believes the Srecall value of hit film franchises propels a

section of audience to return to the theatres for the second part. The 26-year-old actor forayed in Bollywood with 2019's "Student of the Year 2", which also featured Tiger Shroff and Ananya Panday. "It is not a conscious decision, I said yes to them because I loved the idea and I thought I would enjoy being part of them. I do feel there is a set audience who perhaps loved the first part and they would be in to watch the second part," Sutaria, who is looking forward to the release of "Heropanti 2".

"Besides, these are all family films and I have grown up watching family films. I don't think about commerce and all, to me it is about entertaining family audiences through my work," she added. In July, the actor will star in "Ek Villain Returns", the sequel to the 2014 film "Ek Villain". Directed by Ahmed Khan and also starring Shroff, "Heropanti 2" is a sequel to the 2014 romantic-action film of the same name.

The film, slated to be released on Friday, is written by Rajat Arora of "Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai" fame. Sutaria said the makers of "Heropanti 2" approached her in 2020 for the project and she immediately boarded the cast. She plays Inaaya, who she described as a "loud and endearing" character. "I tend to listen more and talk less in real life. But it was fun to play a character who is loud and funny," the actor added. Sutaria's last release was "Tadap", which released in December.
