Things to Avoid

Page 19: RPI IEEE Student Branch 2/28/13 GBM 2/7/2013RPI – IEEE | RPI Branch of the IEEE 1.

Connections Don’t just use the generic

message option, take a few moments to write something personalized.

Sending a thanks for connecting with a sales pitch is asking to be ignored. Show interest, be genuine; networking for a job is a two-way street.

Don’t be afraid to request connections, help remind people who you are in your invitation, having a large network is always a good thing.

about connecting and building relationships.

Some company career websites have “Apply with LinkedIn” plugin , which submits your profile as your application.

After submitting your profile, a list of your connections at the company who may be able to provide a referral for the job will appear.

In addition, you can manage your job submissions using the Apply with LinkedIn button when you go to your LinkedIn.com "Saved Jobs" tab to view the jobs you have applied for.

Twitter Developing a presence on Twitter is a great way to increase

your knowledge of technology, social media, marketing and your industry

Create your bio as if it's an online resume, or an introduction at a professional conference. Include a professional picture of your face, a website and an "elevator pitch" of your professional experience and interests.

Think of Twitter as a conversation at a work-based social gathering. Keep your topics educational, news related, entertaining and slightly personal.

Networking on Twitter

Find former and current colleagues on Twitter.

Go to WeFollow or Twellow to find industry leaders on Twitter.

Don't be shy, if you find a post that you want to respond to.

Tweet consistently, but not constantly.

Follow trending topics and hashtags.

Ask for advice on Twitter.
