President’s Foreword

As the new President it gives me great pleasure to welcome visitors and contributors to the 203rd exhibition of the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours. Our aim this year has been, as always, to bring together a selection of the very best in contemporary watercolour painting. We hope that you enjoy the show.

In curating the exhibition we sought to include the widest range of subjects, styles and methods used by member and non-member artists today. Watercolour is a wonderful medium capable of a vast range of expressive possibilities from sublimely subtle and delicate to confidently forthright and powerful. And now artists working in newer water soluble mediums are moving the boundaries and widening the expressive possibilities even more.

Water mixed with natural pigment was the very first artist’s medium - used by early man to paint on the walls of caves. Since then it has moved on more than a little but still retains its natural quality and elemental power. In the past decade or so there has been a resurgence of interest in watercolour painting across the world and we are especially pleased this year to welcome the work of several distinguished artists from as far afield as the USA and China.

We are honoured and delighted that HM The Queen continues her Patronage of the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours and similarly pleased that our Honorary Member HRH The Prince of Wales has again sent us two of his paintings for inclusion in the exhibition.

We are also pleased that several new awards have been donated by generous sponsors at home and abroad. These include a prize to encourage innovation in watercolour painting from the Shenzhen International Watercolor Biennial, China and a new award to encourage young artists given by the venerable London guild - The Worshipful Company of Leathersellers.

Throughout the past year RI Officers and Council have worked hard to plan this exhibition. The standard of submission for the open entry was as high as ever and deciding which paintings to include was not easy with many excellent works not making it into the final selection. Eventually the final choices were made and the exhibition hung over a two day period. We hope you like the result and that it gives you as much pleasure and food for thought as it has given us.

Enjoy!

Andy Wood

Andy Wood: The RI’s New President

Andy Wood has been a member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours since 1981. After serving on Council for a number of years he was elected Honorary Secretary in 2009 and elected President of the RI in 2014.

Born in 1947 in Porlock, Somerset, he showed promise as a painter from an early age. Encouraged by his grandfather, a gifted amateur artist, he took up watercolour painting at the age of 14 and has been heard to say that fifty or so years later he is still trying to master it.

Andy is focussed on encouraging the use of the medium of watercolour in contemporary painting. He is also keen to attract young artists to the RI both as exhibitors and as members. He designed and built the RI’s website at a time when there was some opposition within the society to new technology. More recently he has encouraged the Institute to embrace social media such as Facebook and Twitter. He sees his role as being to keep the society in the present while always looking to the future.

Ronald Maddox: President EmeritusIn recognition of Ronald Maddox’s 25 years as President of the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours it has been decided to award him the unique honour of the title of President Emeritus.A highly respected landscape painter, illustrator and designer Ronald Maddox was born in Purley, Surrey, in 1930. A member of the RI since the 1960s he served on Council before being elected Membership Secretary in 1974 then, five years later, Vice President. In 1989 he became the fourteenth President of the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours. He is currently Chairman of the board of the Artists’ General Benevolent Institution on which he has served for many years. While President Emeritus is an honorary title Ronald will of course continue to be a full member of the society while his uniquely long experience and knowledge of the Institute will no doubt be called upon when required.
