Family’s fund helps newborns at RCHWhen Isabella and Brooklyn Wilson
were born at 23 weeks, they weighed just475 grams and 480 grams, respectively.
The twins were delivered at RoyalColumbian Hospital on May 15, 2011; twodays later, Brooklyn passed away after amassive brain hemorrhage.
Isabella spent another 138 days in theneonatal intensive care unit, one of theprovince’s high-risk neonatal care sites, before being able to go home with herfamily, and is now a healthy one-year-old.
The twins’ parents Tanya and Joel, along with big sister Charlotte, recentlyannounced they were starting a $5,000trust fund in Brooklyn’s honour, in sup-port of families whose newborns areadmitted to the NICU.
“The NICU nurses made Brooklyn’spassing a peaceful, intimate moment forus, and for that we will always hold themdear,” said Tanya in a press release fromthe hospital.
“I really felt like the NICU nursesnurtured me throughout her (Isabella’s)long stay. They allowed me to share mylife, my stories and my feelings. Theyhelped both Joel and me feel OK with allthe emotions that we had. Over time, itstarted to feel like our second home. Wewould look forward to going in to seeour little girl, but also to see the NICUnurses.”
The family had to make daily 82 kilo-metre round trip commutes to and fromRCH and their home in Aldergrove.
“By creating the Brooklyn Wish Fundwe hope to ease some of these logisti-cal costs for other RCH NICU families,”says Joel. “The fund will provide sup-port for families to access items such asbreast pumps, food vouchers, parkingand TransLink passes.”
RCH Foundation president AdrienneBakker called the Wilsons “an extraordi-nary young couple” for their efforts.
“Their generosity demonstrates a deepempathy for and commitment to other
families who may find themselves in asimilar situation.”
Bakker said the wish fund was a “trea-sure in (RCH’s) fundraising portfolio”that they would help grow over the
years.“It is a privilege to be entrusted with
such a profound gift and the memory ofBrooklyn.”
In memory: From left: Tanya, Isabella, Joel and Charlotte Wilson have recently established the Brooklyn’s Wish Fund to helpsupport families at Royal Columbian Hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit in memory of their daughter and sister, Brooklyn.Brooklyn and Isabella were born 23 weeks early.
THE LOSS OF THEIR DAUGHTER, BROOKLYN, INSPIRES TRUST FUND
City past danger period for floodwatersThe Mighty Fraser is losing steam after
several weeks of rising waters. The B.C. River Forecast Centre ended
a high streamflow advisory for the lowerFraser River on Monday, July 2. The FraserRiver reached a peak level of 6.25 metres atMission on July 1, but had dropped to 5.97metres by the next day.
“Although the river is still a bit high,
it is not at levels of concerns,” said DaveJones, the city’s manager of emergencymanagement. “For the boating community, there is still a lot of debris in the river.”
The B.C. River Forecast Centre statesthat flows on the lower Fraser River areexpected to continue to recede through theweek, and are expected to remain belowlevels of concern.
Jones said the threat around high waterhas ended and river levels will beginto return to normal. Jones said the only
impacts of high water in New Westminsterwere some backing up of storm drains, and some water in underground parkadesat the Quay.
“Those are normal places for highwater,” he added. “That happens all thetime. They were designed that way.”
In the days ahead, city staff will beginto remove temporary measures that havebeen placed in low-lying areas of the city,in case they were needed to be used toaddress flooding. Signs alerting residents
to be cautious around the river will alsobe removed.
Jones said staff will meet for a debrief-ing to discuss the city’s response to the2012 high water situation in B.C. He looksat the recent high water response as a“learning opportunity” that serves the citywell.
“It reinforces our bonds with otheragencies,” he added. “We have alreadyhad good relationships but it only getsbetter.”

Trachta, a mother of two,is an architect.
“I think that’s one of thereasons I was asked to bePAC president,” she said, laughing. “So that I couldhelp translate this processand try to do my best tounderstand what’s beingdone, and what’s beingsaid and what it means inlayman’s terms.”
The school district andthe city held an open houseon Wednesday on the sta-tus of the school project.
The three firms in therunning are BouygesBuilding Canada Ltd., DGSConstruction CompanyLtd. and YellowridgeDesign Build Ltd.
The school is expectedto be occupied by Januaryof 2014, Trachta said.
Board of educationchair James Janzen said theschool district wants air-quality testing done.
“We actually have justsent off some letters to thecity, Metro Vancouver andTransLink outlining thoseconcerns and, in particular, asking the city and MetroVancouver to do more air-quality testing around thearea,” Janzen said.
Janzen was told at aneighbourhood trafficadvisory committee meet-ing that air-quality testingwas recently done at cityhall and that, “everythingwas fine.”
School trustees are alsoconcerned about the impactof a six-lane bridge. InMarch, the board of educa-tion unanimously endorseda motion to oppose expan-sion of the Pattullo Bridge.
The school district helda series of public work-shops in 2009 to determinethe best location for a newmiddle school for studentsin the city’s West End.
The options that came
out of the workshops wereto build a middle schoolat Lord Kelvin, then eitherreplace Kelvin on the highschool site at the corner ofEighth Street and EighthAvenue or expand capacity
at the surrounding elemen-tary schools, or build a mid-dle school on the Robsonsite and replace Robson atSaint Mary’s.
Saint Mary’s squeakedby as the favourite, with
about 38 per cent of attend-ees saying it was their topoption compared to theKelvin plan, which receivedjust slightly less support at35 per cent, according to adistrict report.
Prior to the public work-shops, Grimston Park wasproposed as a possiblelocation for a new elemen-tary school.
Under that plan, a newmiddle school would
be built on the LordTweedsmuir Elementaryschool site. Grimston Parkneighbours, who didn’twant a school built on theirpark, rallied against theplan.

Downtown New Westminster resembleda cement truck convention on Thursday.
Cement trucks descended on the areaaround the site of New Westminster’s futurecivic centre.
While a number of footings have alreadybeen poured for the future civic centre in thepast few weeks, Thursday’s pour required alot of cement. More cement will be poured atthe site as the project proceeds, but the June28 pour was an all-day affair.
“They were pouring all day,” said TerryAtherton, the city’s manager of civic build-ings and properties. “This was a big one.”
Atherton said the concrete pour was forthe large raft foundation of the office corethat extends from the top of the office downto the bottom of the parkade.
“There were about 120 concrete mixertrucks, total volume of concrete was approxi-mately 1,000 cubic metres, with 350 tonnesof rebar,” he said. “This will be the largestsingle pour of concrete on the project. It tookapproximately 10 hours to complete, evenwith using three concrete pump trucks.”
In addition to being at the civic centresite at Eighth and Columbia, the concretemixer trucks were staged in front of the Keg,the northbound lane of Eighth Street andAlexander Street.
Work is underway on the $94 million
City pours it on at civic centre siteA 10-hour job: 120 concretemixer trucks pour 1,000 cubicmetres of cement into site
Laying the foundation: Numerous contractors were on the future civic centre site June 28 for the largest cement pour of theconstruction project. All totalled, 120 concrete mixer trucks transported cement to the site, with a total volume of 1,000 cubicmetres of cement.

Although we share a border and along history with one of the largest coun-tries in the world, there are times whenwe really wonder about our neighbours.
This past week the SupremeCourt of the United Statescame out with a decision thatallowed – barely – for thegovernment to continue imple-menting a new health-care plan.
In a 5-4 vote, the court allowedPresident Barack Obama to continue withhis pledge to ensure that every American
can receive health care without losingtheir life savings. A plan, dare we say, that we Canadians take for granted, andconsider less than controversial.
The new health-care plan inthe U.S. is not even a distantcousin of Canada’s Medicare.Private insurers are still essen-tially in charge of the U.S.
system – but now they have to abideby some rules such as providing healthinsurance to people with pre-existingconditions. The fact that U.S. citizens
actually allowed insurance companiesto stop insuring kids with disabilities, cancer survivors and those with chronicconditions still boggles our mind.
And, to be sure, the court did notmake its decision on what we mightconsider moral principles. It did so on atechnicality – labelling the assessment forhealth care as a tax, and therefore in thegovernment’s power to impose.
This past weekend we celebratedCanada’s 145th birthday. It was alsoSaskatchewan’s 50th anniversary of the
introduction of Medicare.Universal healthcare may have its lim-
itations, but the principle that healthcareis a Canadian right and not a company’sright to profit from, is not only a compas-sionate moral position, but also one thatmakes sense for our society. We are allconnected – whether we like it or not.
After the Supreme Court’s decision, some Americans said they were going toprotest by leaving the U.S. and relocatingto Canada.
Please, spare us.
Who will leave theB.C. Liberals?
So B.C. Liberal MLA KevinKrueger is packing it in(well, eventually) and is
taking his boombox voice out ofthe legislature for good come thenext election.
But he won’t be the onlyhigh-profile MLA to call it quitsby then and announce that he orshe won’t be running in the nextelection.
As the re-election prospectsfor the B.C. Liberal governmentlook increasingly dim, expect anumber of others to opt out ofrunning for what may likely be aseat in Opposition.
I suspect any veterans of aprovincial government cabinetwould dread the idea of sittingin Opposition, of going fromwielding genuine political powerto having none.
The ministers on mostobservers’ most-likely-to-go listsinclude Finance Minister KevinFalcon, Education MinisterGeorge Abbott and EnergyMinister Rich Coleman. All areveterans, all have been in cab-inet a long time, and they surelymust dread the idea of sittingacross from a government, ratherthan being part of it.
Falcon also has a very young
family, which must be a hugefactor as he weighs his politicalfuture. Rumors abound thatColeman is fishing for a seat inthe federal Senate, and Abbottwill have served more than 15years as an MLA by the time thenext election rolls around.
Many have speculated thatFalcon may leave politics for afew years, only to return downthe road to lead a new free enter-prise coalition party that emer-ges from the rubble that may bethe B.C. Liberal party after theMay, 2013 election.
If people like Falcon, Abbottand Coleman do indeed throwin the towel, it will present aninteresting challenge for PremierChristy Clark. Traditionally, apremier will remove from cab-inet any minister who isn’t seek-ing re-election.
However, I don’t think shecan afford to lose ministers ofthis stature. Falcon will mostassuredly remain as finance min-ister, to allow him to bring in theimportant pre-election budget.
Coleman has a lot of respon-sibilities (including being houseleader), and it’s hard to see any-one from the backbench fillinghis shoes, while Abbott’s steadyhand is needed in cabinet.
Other B.C. Liberals who maybe rethinking their politicalfutures likely include currentChildren and Families MinisterMary McNeil, former cabinetministers Colin Hansen, RandyHawes, Moira Stilwell, KashHeed, Bill Barisoff, and Murray

Thanks for ‘wonderful’ actDear Editor:
On June 28, I received the news that my grandmahad a stroke and that she was at Royal ColumbianHospital on life support – and she wasn’t going tomake it. I rushed to the hospital emergency park-ing lot and quickly went to pay for three hours ofparking.
My credit card stripe wasn’t working and I justgave up and rushed in to be with my grandma. When I returned to my car three hours later (expect-ing a ticket), there was a note on my windshieldfrom the lady behind me in line at the parkingmeter stating that she had paid for my parking forthe three hours and was sorry to hear about mygrandma and wished she could give me a hug.
It was so very kind of this total stranger to helpme out while I was in such an emotional state.
To that woman – I say a sincere thank you. Thereare wonderful people in this world – and you areone of them.

Re: City should be cautious about changing dogbylaw, Letters to the Editor, The Record, June 23.
Diane McQuade believes that the City of NewWestminster should not change its current discrimi-natory dog bylaw language.
The reason? Her 40-pound terrier was allegedlyattacked by a 150-pound bull mastiff one day.
Which part of the breed-specific language wouldhave adequately prevented or even addressed theissue, since bull mastiffs are not listed as one of the

Bigger issues at play inElizabeth Fry decisionDear Editor:
Re: City let residents down, Letters tothe Editor, The Record, June 29.
Well said, Catherine. It is truly sad thatour elected officials are using the greatand important service that the EFry pro-vides to pave the way for development ofthis historic community.
Anyone with a computer can GoogleElizabeth Fry Society and look at themap to see a huge gaping empty lot onColumbia Street right beside the existingEFry building.
The owner of the lot approached theSapperton residents association a fewyears ago to look for support for a vari-ance in developing this lot.
I’m sure it would have been easy towork out a deal where the variance wouldbe granted in exchange for ample spaceset aside for EFry.
This has never been mentioned by citycouncil nor has any other option otherthan the OCP change.
I would suggest this is because there isa larger plan afoot and this is the perfect
opportunity to start that plan in motion. Before the cries of NIMBYism rain
down on me, I will say that I pass bythe EFry all the time walking my kids toschool and always smile at whoever is outfront of the building, sometimes stoppingto talk as they pet our dog.
These are people in need of help and Ibelieve we should try to help them, but Ifeel they are being used as pawns.
Take heed New Westminster, todayit is Sapperton but tomorrow this kindof underhanded action could be takenagainst your community.

Is Mayor Wright up to thechallenge of TransLink?Dear Editor:
Maybe TransLink should make (thePattullo Bridge) eight lanes or how about10? It doesn’t matter because a precedenthas been set.
A city can change existing traffic byimplementing bike lanes. Just like MayorGregor the Good has done to various heavytraffic streets in downtown Vancouver.
TransLink gives us a six-lane bridgeand we change McBride and Queens intoone lane for cars and one for bicycles.
All in the good name of “going green.”Coquitlam looked like idiots by build-
ing the “highway to nowhere” from UnitedBoulevard to a single lane Bailey BridgeTransLink may go down the same road.
Of course Mayor Wright will have tostand up to a lot of political arm twisting.
Let’s see if he is up to the challenge.Les Whyte, New Westminster

Coell (MLA Harry Bloyhas already announced hewon’t be seeking re-elec-tion).
If departures of thisscale do indeed occur, itmay allow Clark to argueher party has changed sig-nificantly from the GordonCampbell era, but I suspectit will be difficult for her toattract a lot of high-qualityreplacement candidates.(Again, who wants to sit inOpposition?)
The pending depar-tures on the NDP side area smaller group: MichaelSather, Dawn Black andperhaps Gary Coons andDiane Thorne.
When we get an officialcount of those not seekingre-election, it will likely bereflective of the directionsthe two parties seem to beheading.
One looks like it’s head-ed for government, theother for electoral disaster.
If the polls are accur-ate and don’t changemuch, the number of B.C.Liberals leaving should beabout three times that ofNew Democrats not seek-ing re-election.

A number of observ-ers have wondered ifthe tentative agreementbetween the B.C. TeachersFederation and theiremployer could have beenreached well before now.
Remember, for monthsthe BCTF had been look-ing for a 15 per cent wageincrease, and the employerwas seeking a fair numberof concessions from theteachers at the negotiatingtable.
Here’s what I wrote inthis space last December, more than a half year ago,as I suggested how a dealcould be struck:
“Now, there is abso-lutely no hope of the BCTFachieving anything evenremotely similar to whatit is demanding when itcomes to financial com-pensation … but whatif the BCTF dropped itswage demands and said,in return, get rid of theconcessions?”
Well, that’s preciselywhat happened, and whatit took to get a deal in theend. The BCTF agreed toa zero per cent wage hike, and the employer droppedthe concessions.
I hate to say I told youso, but …

project that includes a civic centreand an office tower. The civic centrewill include a 350-seat theatre withflexible seating to accommodate avariety of productions, conferenceand meeting space, art studios, an artgallery, tourist information centre andthe city’s museum and the CanadianLacrosse Hall of Fame.
Several weeks ago, the portion ofColumbia Street between Eighth andBegbie streets was closed to traffic forseveral days so tower cranes couldbe erected at the civic centre site. Thestreet closure was required becausethe only way to lay the cranes downflat was to close off a section ofColumbia Street.
Atherton said both cranes wereplaced at the site at the same timeto limit the disruption to traffic. Atthe same time, a large excavator inthe “hole” at the civic centre site
was removed because it’s no longerneeded.
The crane now located on the eastend of the site has a hook that’s about170 feet high, while the crane on thewest side of the construction site hasa hook that’s about 230 feet high. Thecrane on the east side has a higherload capacity.
The $94 million project beingundertaken by the City of NewWestminster includes $41.5 millionfor the civic centre, $12.5 millionof the underground parking struc-ture and $40 million for the officedevelopment. Casino revenues, debtfinancing, and reserves will fund theproject.
The city announced April 30 thatit would proceed with constructionof the office tower component ofthe new multiuse civic centre facil-ity on Columbia Street. Although theUptown Property Group had planned
to build the office tower, it later with-drew from the project.
Mayor Wayne Wright says the cityisn’t rushing to find a partner for itscivic centre project.
“We are not rushing on that. Whatwe are doing is making sure weare building it properly,” he toldThe Record. “It is in good shape.Everything is right on schedule.”
Wright is confident in the city’sdecision to move forward on con-struction of the office tower and thecity’s ability to lease or sell the officespace.
“Sites like this are gems,” he said.“There are not many of them around. We are right on SkyTrain, we are rightin a downtown. We have to makessure ours is the best – that is what weare working toward.”
The City of New Westminster willspend about $90,000 to conduct adetailed parking study for the down-town.
The study will collect data on cur-rent parking regulations and sup-ply, and future projected demandand supply. The process also includesconsultation with area stakeholders, development of policies and strate-gies based on city objectives, commu-nity feedback and best practices.
Mayor Wayne Wright said thestudy will consider a range of parkingprovided in the downtown, includingparking at the future civic centre, theFront Street parkade and the Plaza 88development. He said the informa-tion obtained in the study will helpthe city determine its parking needs
in the future. While some people believe that the
city should demolish part of the FrontStreet parkade, others have stressedthe need for parking in the down-town. Before any decision is madeabout the fate of the parkade, Wrightsaid the city needs to evaluate park-ing needs of today and the future.
“Once we find out all the informa-tion, we can make a decision on whatto do,” Wright said.
The study, to be done by UrbanSystems, will identify short-, medium-and long-term measures regarding thequality, type and locations of parkingin downtown New Westminster.
“While recent studies show a sur-plus of on-street and off-street park-ing in both public and private facili-ties, parking is not always availableclose to destinations and there areconcerns about parking and the long-
term viability of downtown business-es as the area redevelops, particularlywith respect to the future of the FrontStreet parkade and the attractivenessand accessibility of the city’s water-front,” said a staff report.
The first step of the process is toconduct on-street parking surveys. The city expects the study to be com-pleted by January 2013.
“The downtown parking studyprovides an opportunity for the estab-lishment of a comprehensive databaseline for parking in the down-town, a dialogue with stakeholderson addressing current issues andfuture directions and the identifica-tion of policies and strategies,” saidthe report. “The process and deliver-ables will help move the city towardachieving the objectives of the down-town community plan and a morelivable, successful downtown.”

New Westminster city council is urgingTransLink to continue supporting the Taxi Saverprogram.
TransLink had announced it was cutting itsTaxi Saver program and reinvesting the fundsin HandyDART services, but later indicated itwould consult with affected groups. The programprovides a 50 per cent subsidy on the cost of taxicoupons to eligible users of HandyDART.
Mayor Wayne Wright is pleased that the pro-gram is being reviewed.
“In New Westminster we have many peoplewho need it,” he said. “Personally, I have been 100per cent trying to keep that alive.”
New Westminster city council has approveda recommendation from the city’s special ser-vices and access committee to “strongly support”the continuation of the program because it’swidely used and depended upon by some NewWestminster residents. The motion approved bycouncil states that the service is essential and pro-vides needed transportation for persons with dis-abilities and provides urgent short-notice service, including to areas where transit isn’t available.
By Theresa McManus, staff reporter
A downtown construction project isproceeding just in the way it’s beenplanned.
Residents living around the futureNorthbank building at 125 ColumbiaSt. questioned why construction activityseems to have halted at the site.
“We have completed our bulk exca-vation,” said Peter Newall, presidentof Ballenas Project Management. “Youtake out the bulk of the material youneed to take out.”
According to Ballenas, about 6,000metres of material has been removedfrom the site that’s located near Elliottand Columbia streets. Heavy-dutymachinery that’s no longer needed forexcavation has also been removed fromthe site.
“We finished the excavation and theshoring,” Newall said. “We are donethose stages.”
Neighbours have reported seeing anumber of SkyTrain officials at the sitein recent weeks.
“We are finalizing some structur-al details with TransLink,” Ballenasexplained. “Once we finalize what thosedetails are, we will get on with that nextstage which will be to get on with pil-ing.”
Newall noted that TransLink has aright of way that is over the Northgateproperty.
“We have been dealing withTransLink for quite a while,” he said.“We show them our structural plans.”
TransLink has its own structuralexperts who then review and respondto Ballenas’s plans.
Newall said most of the work hasbeen finalized. He anticipates that con-struction activity will get underway onthe site in about a month.
“Nothing unexpected at all,” he saidof work now taking place at the site.“We are proceeding as I had expected.”
A TransLink spokesperson could notbe reached before The Record’s dead-line.
Some residents had wonderedwhether high water on the Fraser Rivermay be impacting the project.
“It has no bearing at all. We are wayup,” Newall said. “There is groundwa-ter running through the site. We havesome sumps in place, some pumps. It isnot anything unusual.”
In July 2011, city council votedfour-to-three in support of a rezon-ing that would allow Ballenas ProjectManagement to build a 21-storey build-ing on Columbia Street. The buildingwill have just over 100 apartment units, eight townhouse units and 740 squarefeet of commercial space.
Many residents attending the pub-lic hearing spoke against the project.Residents living in the tower next doorvoiced concerns about traffic and safetyon Elliot and Clarkson streets, accessto the building, parking problems, lossof views for neighbouring buildings, potential damage to a neighbouringbuilding during the construction pro-cess and suggested the 21-storey build-ing doesn’t fit into the neighbourhoodand will clash with other buildings inthe area.
Northbank is scheduled to open inthe autumn of 2013.

Duglas Cruz hopes to giveRoyal City residents a taste ofgardening with one of his latestcreations.
Cruz, a gardener with the Cityof New Westminster, recentlycompleted a garden display atthe entrance to Queen’s Park.Aiming to do something “kindof different”, he sought a way toincorporate food-production intothe garden.
“I said, ‘I have to do somethingwith vegetables’. I said, ‘wheredo people produce vegetables?’It is in the fields,” he said. “I saidI am going to create a little minifarm.”
The centerpiece of the newfarm-themed garden in Queen’sPark is a small barn that was builtby city carpenters.
Once the wood structure wasbuilt it was covered in a meshthat holds the plants.
“The top is very interesting,”he said. “The roof is made withsedum.”
Trying to incorporate differentcolours and textures, Cruz used anumber or different plants on thesides of the barn.
“Back home, I owned a farm,”said Cruz, who immigrated toCanada from El Salvador. “I hadin my mind a farm. We don’thave that kind of barn over there, but the meaning is the same.”
Cruz, who has a degree inagricultural engineering, had atough time landing a job in thatfield when he arrived in Canadaa decade ago.
Instead he found work on afarm in Delta, as well as sea-sonal work with City of NewWestminster.
The “fields” around the barnin Queen’s Park are currentlyhome to crops including lettuce, cabbage and corn. Tomatoes, gar-lic, onion and other vegetableswill also be grown.
One of Cruz’sgoals was to demon-strate to local familiesthat they can have abeautiful garden thatalso produces food.
“It’s going to growyear-round,” he said.“The succulents I willhave to replace forwinter. The barn ismade to be like thatthe whole year. Wewill be changing thevegetables. There is atime when we have toharvest them.”
Another goal ofthe garden is to showpeople that vegetables can begrown year-round.
“People say vegetables are
only for our summer season,”he said. “We would like to showpeople it is not – it can be all yearround.”
While insects and other crit-ters haven’t posed any problemsfor the small garden, some plants
have died after beingstepped on by littlefeet.
“It looks so cute– sometimes momsand dads put littlekids in the area,” Cruzsaid about the barn.“It is the same pic-ture I had in mind.It is so great whenpeople approach thatand start telling com-pliments. It’s a goodfeeling when peopleappreciate what youdo.”
Cruz said he appre-ciates the creativefreedom he receives
from Claude LeDoux, the city’shorticulture manager.
“Claude always says to us to
be creative, be innovate, use dif-ferent plants, use new plants forthe community to see,” he said.“We get really good support withour projects.”
LeDoux said he’s extremelyproud of all of his staff and wantsto give them the freedom to cre-ate unusual and fun things forthe enjoyment of citizens.
“That is the whole reason wedo these things – for our citizensto enjoy and learn from.”
Cruz, who took a self-employ-ment program at Douglas College, also owns his own landscapingcompany.
A full-time employee with thecity for the past three years, Cruzoversees gardens at Queen’s Park, the New Westminster PublicLibrary, Moody Park Arena,Columbia Street and Sapperton.
“All the areas for me are pri-ority,” he said. “People deserveto see beauty. We have to do thesame quality of job and do ourbest in all the places.”

Tim Delesalle had aheart attack two years ago,in May 2010, at the age of57.
He had just returnedfrom a run, and collapsedat his home.
He was taken to RCHwhere cardiologist Dr.Jean-Francois Dorval dis-covered that one of Tim’scoronary arteries was com-pletely blocked.
Dorval performedsurgery to open the block-age, and he has now fullyrecovered.
“The angels all linedup for me perfectly thatday. From my family, to
the paramedics, to Dr.Jean-Francois Dorval andthe staff at RCH,” saidDelesalle, who is one ofmore than 2,400 patientseach year who receiveangioplasty treatments atRCH.
The multipurposeinterventional suite willhelp expand cardiac andstroke care at the regionalhospital.

The coalition says thatmany people associatetetanus with rusty nails, but the toxin is actually
found in soil and dirt.Infection usually occurswhen an individual isexposed to the toxinthrough a cut or puncture, such as from a rose bushor a cut from a gardentool.
Symptoms of the pot-entially fatal toxin includestiffness of the jaw, knownas lockjaw, along withsevere muscle spasmsabout eight days afterinfection.

Former New Westminster Chief Const.Ken Brown passed away on June 19 atSaanich Peninsula Hospital.
Brown was born on July 31, 1933 inPeace River, Alta., moving to BritishColumbia as a child.
He lived in Surrey before making NewWestminster his home with wife Edna andtheir young family.
Brown served in the RoyalCanadian Navy before starting hispolicing career in 1955 as a con-stable with the Vancouver PoliceDepartment.
Brown was promoted to detec-tive in 1963, sergeant in 1969,staff-sergeant in 1971, and laterto inspector in charge of the vicesquad.
Brown joined the NewWestminster Police Departmentas its 19th Chief Constable in 1978,taking over from Rod Keary.
In the next 14 years, before his retire-ment, Brown served on a variety of pro-vincial and municipal committees, includ-ing a stint as the president of the B.C.Association of Chiefs of Police.
During his tenure in New Westminster,Brown was a big proponent of promotingcommunity involvement in policing, evenbefore the term “community policing” wasin vogue.
An example of this was the creation ofthe New Westminster Police DepartmentSoccer School, which started in the 1980sand runs to this day.
Approximately 300 kids per year par-
take in this weeklong event.Brown also brought New Westminster
police into the modern age, ensuring thatmembers were given the best equipmentand training possible, including the intro-duction of body armour, better holstersand police vehicles and the creation of theemergency response team in 1981.
Brown was the city’s top cop in1990 when a hostage taking and shoot-ing occurred at the New WestminsterCourthouse.
Two police officers werewounded in an exchange ofgunfire with a man who hadsmuggled a gun into the sheriff’sholding cells.
The man took several hos-tages and during an attempt torescue the hostages, the policeofficers engaged in a fierce gunbattle from a distance of only afew metres.
Both officers returned to activeduty, but the male suspect diedin hospital.
Brown received multiple commenda-tions throughout his career.
After Brown’s retirement, he movedwith Edna to Vancouver Island, wherethey lived in Youbou and then BrentwoodBay.
Brown is survived by Edna, his wifeof 59 years; children Teresa (Jack), Debbie(Ken) and Ken (Lorie); eight grandchil-dren; two great-grandchildren; and twosisters, Verna and Ellie.
By Brown’s wishes, there will be no ser-vice, but donations to the CKNW Orphans’Fund can be made in Brown’s name.

Last October, myfriend Vanessa invit-ed me to her home
for her mother’s surprisebirthday party.
I had been teachingher meditation over thepast year. As a combinedgraduation and house gift,I gave her a framed posterof my seven mantras: the“answers” to the sevenquestions I use as angles ofreflection in daily medita-tion.
The seven questionsremind us that we exist
at many different levels, though we often restrictour conscious gaze to anarrowed aspect of ourexperience.
When we are caught upin the busyness of the day, preoccupied with a crisis,or reacting to the heat ofan emotional moment, wecan get stuck in unhealthymental or emotional states. In panic, in anger or ininattention, we may act orspeak in ways out of syncwith our deeper valuesand true selves.
How often do we saythings we don’t mean? How often do we regretacting rashly?
Without reflection, itis our nature to take ourrelationships for grantedand be blind to the beautybefore us.
Last week at Vanessa’sown birthday party, I saw
that she had mounted theframed mantra poster inan appropriate place fordaily reflection – the bath-room. I also noted a longcrack in theglass.
My firstthought wasthat I shouldreplace thatpiece of glass. Not only mightit pose a safetyhazard, bro-ken glass maymake it diffi-cult for a medi-tator to makeher mind astill pond. Butupon reflec-tion, I realizedthat it may be best left asit is.
Just as it is easier forstudents to study in aquiet library, meditation is
easier under perfect con-ditions: alone in a quiet, peaceful setting.
It is easier to think kindthoughts and to speak
mindfully whenthe other personis not shoutingat you.
It is easier tosee beauty andnurture lovingfeelings whenour children aresweet babiesand not angryteenagers.
The true testof a student’slearning is thetest in the field– how what hasbeen learned is
applied to the challengingconditions of real life. We– and our world – are notperfect. Yet we are stillbeautiful and worthy of
love.Meditation is worth-
less if it does not enhancepeace, meaning andhappiness in our messy, unpredictable lives. Thetest of spiritual growth isto live meaningful livesin alignment with ourgreatest values and to seebeauty and experience lovein this imperfect world.
Wabi-Sabi is theJapanese aesthetic thathelps us see beauty in theimpermanence and imper-fection of nature. In ourdaily lives, we complainabout imperfections inothers and in everythingelse.
We are not happy whenthings don’t go as planned, when service is poor, whentraffic is slow, when appli-ances break down andwhen others disappoint us.
But when we think
about even our worst days,it is never true that “noth-ing went right.”
In fact, most things dogo our way. Most peopleare good and decent mostof the time.
A beautiful cherry blos-som is not completelysymmetrical. The peoplewe love do not have per-fect athletic bodies andmovie stars’ faces. Yetthey are still beautiful andworthy of our love.
So are you.A simple and natural
crack in the glass is a gen-tle reminder to see throughto the beauty in our dailylives.

The New Orleans Ale Stars startedbrewing back in November of 2004.Simon Stribling, fearless leader and
multi-instrumentalist, was looking for anoutlet for his boundless energy, musicalenthusiasm and consummate knowledgeof traditional jazz. He wanted a band offine players whose hearts were really in themusic, and who knew how to have fun!
While the original vision was to playstraight ahead in the New Orleanstradition, the band couldn't help but paytribute to the many masters in the field...
Jimmy Noone, Duke Ellington and Simon'shero Louis Armstrong are all representedin the band's repertoire. Add to that theoccasional bop tune and a fine smatteringof Australian jazz tunes and you have thesound of the Ale Stars.
This high energy musical team will beplaying live on the Columbia Street Stagebetween 12noon and 4pm! ■

Local thrower London boundOne young man’s
dream became a communi-ty’s pride at the Canadiannational Olympic trackand field trials in Calgarylast week.
Burnaby Central gradCurtis Moss achieved hisathletic ambition at thefinal Olympic qualifyingmeet of the season, win-ning the men’s javelin atthe national event with athrow of 77.83 metres.
With the win at thenational trials, coupledwith earning AthleticsCanada B standards lastmonth, Moss qualified forCanada’s Olympic Gamesteam.
“I’m just super excitedto go to represent Canadaand Burnaby as well,” saidMoss about being namedto the national Olympicteam.
But the notificationcame with a couple ofdays of suspense for Moss, despite the assurance froman Athletics Canada offi-cial prior to the medal cer-emony that he had madethe team.
A selection committeetook nearly two more daysbefore finally ratifying the40-member team.
“It was so hard,” Mossadded. “I couldn’t believeit. It was like I was goingto wake up and somethi-ing bad was going to hap-pen.”
It didn’t. Throwing bet-ter than the 82-m A stan-dard would have automat-ically earned Moss a spoton the national Olympicteam.
His main rival was ScottRussell of Ontario, whothrew 84.41m last year toestablish a new Canadianrecord.
Russell needed a B stan-dard throw this season tomake the team. Russellplaced third at the tri-als with a throw of 71.73,nearly two metres behindB.C.’s Kyle Nielsen.
Moss earned his twoB standard distances in
the local National TrackLeague series meets lastmonth.
At the Harry JeromeTrack Classic in Burnaby,Moss threw better than80m for the first time ever, hurling the spear over thatdistance on two occasionsat the Swangard Stadiummeet.
Three days later, hedid it again in Victoria, throwing a personal-best
81.21m.At the national trials, the
25-year-old athlete openedthe competition with whatwould have been a win-ning throw of 77.13m intothe swirling headwindsat Foothills Stadium inCalgary on June 29.
“I just salute him,” saidBurnaby throws coachDon Steen.
Moss went into this sea-son with a drive and a
determination to achievehis dream, and withoutthe athletic carding by thesanctioning athletic bodyother athletes enjoy.
Moss and his family andfriends fundraised to sendhim to high-performancemeets in order to get theexperience and competi-tion he needed to reach hisgoals.
Moss started with a winat a Grand Prix meet in
Puerto Rico in May.He then ventured to
Europe, where he finishedsecond in a top Europeanthrowing meet in Halle,Germany, where heachived a then personal-best 79.27m.
“The support was crazy– that was really motivat-ing. … You think aboutthose things that you aredoing are important to youand to other people,” Mossadded.
That support from hisfamily and close friendswas there in Calgary, too.
After his final throw,Moss ran back to the stadi-um fence where his coachand family were standing.
“It was really cool. Itwas great to share all thatwith them and to be soclose. I was crying like ababy,” said Moss.
“For the journey from(high school) to now, it’sbeen great to share myknowledge with him,”said Steen. “It’s an egothing for me. I feel good. But you know, it’s been ajourney, and at this point,he’s not finished. From myperspective, the journeyhas just started.”
Later this week, Mosswill compete at a couple ofhigh-performance meetsin Moncton, N.B. and inToronto this Sunday.
Moss will then returnhome in time for theB.C. championships inCoquitlam on July 13.
The national team willalso travel to Germany fora pre-Olympic trainingcamp later in the month.
At the London Games, the men’s javelin throwqualification is scheduledfor Aug. 8.
Second bestJavelin thrower Krista
Woodward of NewWestminster missedqualifying for the LondonOlympics following a sec-ond-place finish at thenational team trials inCalgary. Woodward bet-tered the championshiprecord, throwing the spear55.36m.
London calling: Javelin thrower Curtis Moss, seen here winning the Harry JeromeTrack Classic, was named to Canada’s Olympic team on Sunday.
Michael Valiante drovethe Honda of America No.93 Civic SI to a secondcheckered flag in the lastthree races in the GrandAmerican ContinentalTire sports car series onSunday.
Valiante took over thecar after a bad pit stopdropped the No. 93 Hondafrom third to 13th place.
Valiante took the leadfrom eventual runner-up Pierre Kleinubing ina Mazda Speed 3 on the33rd lap and led the restof the way, posting a race-high 27 lead laps to claimthe team’s second win inthe street tuner class atthe Continental Tire 150 atWatkins Glen, New York, the team’s third podiumfinish in less than a month
“It’s great to be on aroll. Hopefully we cankeep it up,” said Valianteon Monday.
“Pierre Kleinubing wasreally good coming up theEsses and into the InnerLoop. I was able to holdhim off two or three timesbefore I realized I had to geta really good run in the lastcorner through Turn 1 so Icould hold off his attack. It was very difficult,” saidValiante in a Grand Ampress release.
“It was a good day forpoints, but I was tryingto win no matter what,”said Kleinubing, the newST points leader. “Everytime I got close to Valiante,he dug deeper and pulledaway.”
Valiante and co-driverChad Gilsinger claimedHART’s first ST win ofthe season series at Mid-Ohio in June. The pair thenplaced second at RoadAmerica in Wisconsin lastweek.
The three consecutivepodium finishes moved theHART No. 93 car into thetop 10 in the overall series’team standings.
This weekend, Valiantewill be racing for JDXRacing in a Porschewith at the American LeMans Northeast GrandPrix at Lime Rock Park,Connecticut.
