Thoughts on the Royal Wedding of Prince William and hisbeautiful commoner Kate Middleton

 by Dr. Jeffrey Lant

After 8 years of dating, canoodling, breaking up, making up, breaking up the on-again-off-againrelationship of Prince William of Wales and long tressed Kate is officially on.

The airwaves of the planet dutiful report the expected congratulations. Her Majesty and Prince Philipare "absolutely delighted for them both". Prince Charles is "thrilled". And no doubt they are, for it'stime for the next generation of royals to get on with their important work. There is much to do.

Amongst the royals monarchy is referred to as "the firm"; they say they "live above the shop."Exactly so. It's time for the next proprietor and his spouse to start doing what they're supposed to do:

 bring Britain together.

help the tribe of those battening on the monarchy sell their trinkets and reap their profits.

provide us promptly with an equally photogenic man child ... and then promptly, another. "The

heir... and the spare."

And above all else do what's necessary for an endless stream of gossip, titillation and, best of all, scandal.

Yes, this handsome couple has much to do... and has already begun to do it.

Hidden Winners and Losers

The game of monarchy is a game of musical chairs, or more accurately, chair. For there is just onechair, the throne of England; one's place in the pecking order is determined by one's relationship tothis throne.

As all perspicacious royal watchers have known for years, the fate of a thousand year old institutionwas planted squarely at the feet of just one person, Prince William Arthur Philip Louis of Wales. Hewas, almost from the moment of conception, the white hope of a family which had lost its glamour, its allure... and it's way.

Father Prince Charles... a not so gay divorcee with the tendency for odd, awkward remarks andorganic vegetables. His cynical marriage to a woman he didn't love whilst carrying on with thewoman he did set the stage for the long, painful , glaringly public fall from grace.

Uncle Prince Andrew of York, a once beguiling, handsome tease of a younger brother who marrieda trollop and lived to pay the price, now disillusioned and fat to boot.

Aunt Princess Ann, Princess Royal who chose the handsomest man on the block to marry... only todiscover, in the divorce courts, that a marriage needs more than a shared interest in makingquadrupeds jump a fence.

This supremely privileged crew despite every advantage managed to accrue between them not onenotable achievement, although they have (it's true) kept the scurrilous tabloids of England over busywith talk of their high and (abysmally) low jinks.

These shop worn royals, their sometime lovers and spouses, have all had their day. Now they will all be regally pushed off the stage by the handsomest couple on earth. That is Job 1, and that couple isat it now.

Managing the Ghost

In the best tradition of royal tales, there is a ghost at this feast, an insistent ghost, the groom'sturbulent mother, Princess Diana. Now her unsettled spirit can be well and truly laid to rest, withlove and honor, her sons will see to it.

Diana alive was a nightmare for the Windsors. What would she do? What inappropriate man wouldgain her heart... then sell it to the tabloids in the shabbiest most cynical way? They cringed daily

wondering when the other slipper would drop for this out-of-control Cinderella.

Her death, of course, too soon, was tragic. But it was also a huge relief. Now they can safety lay thisghost to honored rest. This healing process began when Wills gave and Kate displayed Diana'sengagement ring on her finger.

Royal hustlers

What do royals do? They put a regal face on the real business of Britain: selling. Britain grants thesefolks an anachronistic lifestyle of unparalleled munificence; the catch is they must earn it byhustling things British. In Kate, they have found the perfect corporate wife. She is stunninglyattractive, bright, educated, savvy, and (above all else) agreeable to being shaped into the winning

marketer the dynasty requires. The cost for maintaining her in the style to which she'll soon beaccustomed is frankly a pittance compared to the tangible financial benefits to be reaped.

Her marriage alone will pump an extra billion or two into the fragile British economy. Well mightthe Cabinet shout "hear, hear" upon learning the news. The combination of Wills and Kate is afantastic money machine that no mere president can ever rival.

Intrusive questions we will soon have answered

So far the questions the newly affianced royal couple have been asked have been polite, cordial, asking for little, eliciting less. But all this is about to change. Both Wills and Kate have a price ontheir heads, and this price (with the showing of the haunted engagement ring) has escalated

radically.

This is now the situation. This regal couple have friends, pals, classmates, acquaintances, servantsand retainers, any one of whom might know the answers to questions the world is impatient to know:

when how how often where in what way.

These folks are only human. They have bills. They need money. And so, soon, the betrayals will begin, media mogul Rupert Murdoch, fueled by his persistent dynastic hatred and disdain, will see tothat.

These people even now, Judas-like, are mulling over their options: should they betray and prosper?Or let the opportunity of a lifetime pass them by. It's drama in the grand tradition. And it is sure tocome.

Thus, with the brilliant ring given, the opening phase of this deeply fascinating story begins. Weshall not have to wait very long for the next chapter to develop, even so we are acutely impatient tohave it.

For royal wedding guests of Prince William and his Kate,April 29, 2011 a list of does and don'ts, especially the latter.

 by Dr. Jeffrey Lant

By now I am sure you are aware that April 29, 2011 is a very special day in the prodigious annals of the British monarchy. H.R.H. Prince William, white hope of the dynasty, marries his Kate... and his

grandmama The Sovereign is adamant that all be done just so -- or else.Sadly, you have not been invited. Admittedly it is abashing, even humiliating. But you will be gladto know that the lot of the those precious few invited is not a bed of roses. The empire on which thesun never set is history, but protocol, the right thing done in the right way, is very much alive chezWindsor.

Let's take a look.

The Windsors are nothing if not keen on pageants that are meticulously planned and flawlesslycarried out. They know that it was not always thus in royal ceremonial. One way they know this was by careful scrutiny of my first book "Insubstantial Pageant: Ceremony and Confusion at Queen

Victoria's Court". (1979). I was the first American ever granted access to the Royal Archives atWindsor Castle... and it was part of the deal that The Queen and Prince Charles get advance copies toincrease their knowledge of the hopeless mismanagement of ceremonies by their regal ancestors.

Confusions, muddles, and disorganizations were the order of the day. It was supremely frustrating, irritating, and inexcusable that the English made so many mistakes, even lethal, in presenting themonarchy to the nation. Ceremonies of the highest significance and importance -- coronations even-- were so lamentably organized and delivered that the English monarchy became a byword for ineptitude.

We owe improvement to Prince Albert.

Queen Victoria, only 18 when she ascended the throne in 1837 had far better things to do than worryabout ceremonial derelictions. For openers she was free of the heavy thrall of the Duchess of Kent, her mother; perhaps the ultimate controlling Stage Mother of all time. The first thing the new queendid was order her bed to be taken out of the bedroom she had shared all her life with her mother...then order dinner to be served to her alone, the first time that had ever happened. She was free, freeat last! She was queen, her every wish a command instantly carried out. A few glaring mistakes incourt ceremonial counted for nothing.

But the German princeling she married, Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha was very, verydifferent. The insidious culture of royal errors and tolerance for same made him nervous, dyspeptic, and determined to apply Teutonic efficiency to the problem. He fumed, he fretted, he even wept at

the minuscule progress. But there was progress. Just not enough of it.As the grasping English built the largest empire ever assembled on this planet, their royal pageantscontinued to be notable for all the wrong reasons: they were lackadaisical about the protocol thatconsumed other royal houses; thereby causing endless hurt feelings. Their planning was always of the too little, too late variety. And like clockwork, security arrangements were so lax that everyceremony produced a bumper crop of dead, the victims of English inability to get it right... andwithout fatalities.

All this is no doubt known to Elizabeth II and the princes of her house and their constant motto is"Never again!" Thus, they are fastidious in the business of Getting It Right. When the English were agreat nation, the sovereigns themselves were scarcely punctilious about such matters; but with only

the shadow of empire remaining, they are all adamant that the royal ceremonies, in which they so prominently feature, be the very essence of polished perfection.

Hence the list of do's and don'ts now circulating amongst the honored guests, be they princes of the blood royal or (that democratic touch the royals are close to perfecting) personnel from the variouscharities patronized by the bride and groom. In Windsor eyes there is really no difference betweenthem. For them there are, after all, only two ranks: Sovereign... and the rest.

Now to the various admonitions, politely phrased of course as suggestions, recommendations. Butthey are in fact royal commands and must be treated as such.

1) Don't give the queen a friendly hug. Michelle Obama, First Lady of these United States didsomething akin to that and the royal reaction was a tad below frosty.

2) Don't tweet. You are attending an historic event. Curtail all distractions.

3) Be on time. On this of all days, there is no such thing as fashionably late, even by a minute. TheQueen is the last person to take her place; to upstage her is lese majeste, intolerable.

4) Ladies, select an outfit that blends in. You should wear a dress -- not too short, not too skimpy, and certainly not white. Most British women will complete the unmistakable (rather frumpy) look

that screams "We're English!" with a hat or a fascinator -- a small feathered or jewelled hairpieceattached to a clip or a comb.

More politely disguised commands.

5) Leave your cellphone in the car. No one wants your ring tone to the tune of "The Stripper" to be part of the record.

6) Make sure you have all necessary medications with you. You need to know that no one, absolutely no one, will facilitate your egress to get them... and you will not be allowed to returneither.

7) Visit the facilities as often as necessary to ensure bladder control. This means limiting liquids, justas you'd do for a colonoscopy, a not inapt comparison. (Avoid the solution adopted by one ceremonyattending gent. He brought a soft drink bottle and used it like a chamber pot. The name of the perpetrator and the incident itself was immediately classified.)

"I didn't really want to go anyway."

Upon reading these guidelines and rules, you may say, and actually believe, that you didn't reallywant to go to this critical event of "Rule Britannia."

But we're kidding ourselves, aren't we? For the chance to see Prince William and be able to tell your non-invited neighbor that he's taller than he looks on telly is just too good to pass up. Not to mention

the bride, and wasn't she lovely?Indeed, to secure lifetime bragging rights because we were well and truly invited, we'd all, if ordered, go naked with a full body search to boot. Honi soit qui mal y pense.

'Happy and glorious...' Kate marries her Wills and everygrumbler on earth has a field day. April 29, 2011.

 by Dr. Jeffrey Lant

What can you say about the quintessential non-event that has over 2 billion viewers showing up towatch with unfeigned interest?

Plenty, if you're Boston Globe columnist Yvonne Abraham, "God save me from the Queen," shewrote on April 24, as if her pen were filled with acid reflux. "And especially from their Wedding of the Century."

Then she goes on her hackneyed way, "I didn't embrace citizenship of a country defined by itsviolent rejection of monarchy to turn around and be surrounded by all things royal."

My, my Mother Abraham is in a pother today... and will, if she keeps on this way, be positivelyapoplectic by the time Kate becomes, at the touch of a golden ring symbolizing eternity, Her RoyalHighness and the world oohs and aahs.

Ms. Abraham is Australian (she has to get that in in every column she writes), and Aussies can beamongst the rudest people on earth; too often priding themselves on just how cheeky and brash theycan be. It's a sign of their often blatant need to "grow up" and abandon their egregious manners for  better ones. But Abraham just cannot let go...

"Come Friday, the birthplace of the revolution will be lousy with cucumber sandwiches, Pimm'sCups and jelly donuts shaped like hearts (Et tu Dunkin D?)"

Why does the lawful marriage of one young man of striking good looks, a mega-watt smile, good posture and average intelligence to one young woman of intelligence, undeniable beauty, a coalminer's grand daughter who once denied him and broke off their thing, irritate so many... turningotherwise sensible folks into grumps and bores on the subject?

Such people tumble over themselves to recite the reasons for their loud lamentations and hostilities.

* The day for a monarchy has, they assure us, passed... down with the Windsors and every other crowned entity on earth.

* No one should be so privileged as the Windsors are and their ilk. It's time for them to get with therepublican agenda.

* America, as Yvonne Abraham has naggingly reminded, went to war, bloody, long, vicious, to getrid of the very people the wedding glorifies.

* The monarchy is a symbol of all that's wrong with the world... being at once elitist, privileged,

coddled, protected, immune from the realities of life from which we should all be suffering, princeor pizza maker.

Let's examine these remarks. Is there anything here beyond unsubstantiated opinion, bias, and theneed to mouth off?

First and foremost: this is above all else the celebration of a fundamental rite, marriage, the selectionfor life of one smitten by another, hopefully equally smitten, or even more. A marriage celebratesthe decision to try to love, honor, cherish. For 50% or so of the people so venturing divorce andmayhem loom... but people want to try anyway. And they are glad that their princes, too, embracethe concept.

As clever 19th century British journalist Walter Bagehot (1826-1877) wrote in his insightful book "The English Constitution" (published 1867): "A princely marriage is the brilliant edition of auniversal fact, and, as such, it rivets mankind." Spot on.

This marriage will feature more carriages, more guests, more presents, and more media coveragethan you got at your wedding... but the heart of this wedding will be the same as yours: "Do you...?Do you...?" And they with all their palaces, wide acres, jewels and powdered footmen to spare willthen offer the same simple kiss that you gave your new spouse, the kiss that symbolized your desireto love and live for this now very special person and your sanctified relationship. And at thatmoment, with that kiss the two billion viewers will be thinking not just of the prince and new princess... but of themselves, of their marriages, their ceremonies... and their personal dreams andillusions. And of how not even princes emerge from fairy tales unscathed.

Their way will feature different problems than yours, but they will face problems all the same. Whatthey are saying is that they want to be with each other as they face these problems. They deserve thesame chance that you had and like all newly married couples the same generous good wishes fromthose of us who know better than they that even princes will need those good wishes in future sinceno one lives on this planet without costs of every kind and amount.

And as for the comments by designated commentators like Yvonne Abraham, angry that America, the first great republic of modern times, should waste its time watching people whose ancestorsrobbed, plundered and pillaged amongst us. Have we forgotten that, well have we?

Slow down, darling', most assuredly you have got your knickers in a twist... and every word besidethe point.

Our interest in this marriage and attendant events has absolutely nothing to do with being seducedaway from our republican constitution and government. Even the question is silly. First, manymillions amongst us have a high regard for the old countries of the United Kingdom, England,Scotland, Ireland. They are part of our history and heritage. To abjure them is to abjure a part of ourselves. Why would we ever want to do that? Even the Founding Fathers didn't advocate such a

course. The men who had toppled George III and his emblems in every colony worked hard after theRevolution to establish diplomatic relations with England. Then they worked long and hard to turnmere relations into an alliance of heart and mind, not just politics and commerce. The UnitedKingdom, whose monarchy we rebelled against and expelled from our land, is now our closest allyand friend.

Suppose for a moment that you had once quarrelled with your parents. Suppose terrible things, regrettable things were done and said by you and them. Would that end matters, in grief andrecrimination? Certainly not, for are they not your parents still and have you no regard for them andthe good things they did? And here's the point: if they invited you to an important event, say awedding, would you refuse to be friends again? You'd go of course, for auld lang syne.

That is why billions of people will gather round their television sets this Friday, April 29. for us onthis side of the Pond at very early hours indeed. We shall watch closely, commenting freely and, for nearly all, in good humor. And when these young now married people go onto the balcony of Buckingham Palace for The Kiss, our hearts will go out to them, not as gaudy royalty but as good people on whose slender shoulders a valued thousand year old institution will in due course be placed. Then they will surely need from us not just cheers, but support. They shall have it from me.

One last word for you, Mother Abraham. In 1999 the citizens of Australia voted in a nationalreferendum about whether to abolish the monarchy and become the Republic of Australia, or not.Your fellow citizens voted 55-45 percent to keep the Windsors and the monarchy.

'I am so happy...' Some thoughts on Their Royal HighnessesThe Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, the next incarnation of Wills and his Kate.

 by Dr. Jeffrey Lant

Author's Note. To get into the right and proper mood for this article, search any search engine for Sir

William Walton's resounding "Crown Imperial." This was the music Their Royal Highnesses heardas they walked the Westminster Abbey red carpet to their future subjects, the cynosure of every eye.Walton was the perfect choice... you'll see.

The State Landau, smart and polished had just driven up to the gate where the newly minted, newlymarried Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were waiting. The woman who started the day as KateMiddleton, turned to her new husband and said the magic words, so telling because we all felt thesentiment before she even uttered it. "I am so happy," she whispered to her prince, truly charmingand a bit abashed by his position this day and perhaps thinking, "Waiting was worth it. I am trulymarrying the woman I adore... and everyone is so glad about it. And I do believe she loves me for myself."

The pageantry and ceremony in general.

In the 19th century, the British and their monarchy were a byword for sloppy, disorganized, andoften dangerous royal ceremonies. The person who was most instrumental in changing matters wasQueen Victoria's "beautiful" (her word) hunk the German princeling Albert of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha.From his time at Court in the mid-1800s things got better, slowly but surely, as I detail in my book "Insubstantial Pageant: Ceremony and Confusion at Queen Victoria's Court (1979). By the early 20thcentury the overall reality of ceremonial muddle had been replaced by a professional approach toshowcasing the monarch to his people. The British are now justly renowned worldwide for theflawless pageants that punctuate each sovereign's reign and present him to his subjects and the world just the way he wishes.

The now traditional and punctilious pageantry we expect was very much on display on Friday, April29, 2011. It was a joy to watch the aspects emerge... particularly given the fact that this eventoperated under peculiar circumstances... the inevitable, could-never-be-avoided comparisons to the pageantry and circumstances of the marriage 30 years before between Prince Charles, Prince of Wales and Lady Diana Spencer. The marriage and ceremonial arrangements of Diana, Princess of Wales' elder son and his beautiful Kate had to be considered carefully so that all of the inevitablecomparisons tilted in favor of the soon-to-be Cambridges... as they most surely did.

Princess Diana's marriage to the heir to "this throne of kings, this England", Prince Charles was anaffair of the highest state; after all the groom was the heir to the imperium. In retrospect, what

seemed so beguiling at the time appears as more an event than a marriage. Splendor (and perfectcoordination) was there... love and affection were not. It was an omen for the tragedy whichfollowed, besmirching the reputation of Prince Charles and ending in Princess Diana's sad demise.

Both of Princess Diana's sons, groom Prince William and justly concerned younger son PrinceHarry were clear on what they wanted... a real marriage, a real wedding, true and heartfelt feelingsall round.

There is no question but that they got what they wanted... which was a decided relief to the Britishnation and its Commonwealth... and its Queen, Elizabeth II, who arrived back at BuckinghamPalace after the marriage ceremony and proclaimed the day's events "amazing." And so they were...

The Married Couple.

After the cynical, loveless marriage of the groom's mother Princess Diana, the nation and bodylanguage experts were on the qui vive for "the truth" about this couple, their wedding, and whether itconfirmed (or challenged) the good feelings they had about Wills and Kate, and their pivotal role inestablishing just the right reality (not merely image) that will allow the monarchy to flourish after themany crises of the current Royal Family, particularly the much married, much divorced children of Queen Elizabeth, a tawdry, shopworn crew.

April 29th delivered what everyone wanted: a grounded, affectionate, sincerely attached couple, people who are what they seemed to be, not a scandal waiting to happen.

Kate's gown was the first clue. Lady Diana's overdone gown made her look like a confectioner's bride. Who's idea was the taffeta anyway? But Kate, chic Kate, delivered exactly what one wouldhave wanted for one's own family wedding: a form-fitting dress that breathed classic good taste, undeniable (though understated) elegance. It is the dress of a lady of taste, breeding, good judgement, and, so very visible, care, every one a desirable trait for her future job asone-who-may-be Queen Consort.

The little clues so beloved of commentators and would-be cognoscenti began to stack up:

* The interaction between Princes William and Harry indicated just how close they are; they neededto be given the scandal and tragedy of their parents' relations. Harry, for all that he's a knownwise-acre, will be lonely now; Wills has other things to do which, even with the best will on earth, will limit time with Harry.

* The way he looked at his bride for the first time in her riveting marriage attire... and said, quitesimply, "You look so beautiful." And so she did... and what every bride longs to hear, thecompliment based on affection, awe, and a dawning awareness that he is really getting married, andto the person he has always wanted.

* The body language. As all the world knows, these two people took some eight years to get

acquainted, know each other, argue and make up with each other, and love each other. The time theywisely took enabled them to become and be a couple, then yesterday, a married couple. They movetogether well; I was interested to see how they left the Abbey, hand in hand, the new Duke of Cambridge putting down the heel of one shoe on the toe of the other, so as not to hurry his duchess inher gown and (not too long) train.

Mad for Kate.

I have long been a Kate Middleton admirer; I thought she had just the right traits of heart and mindto be a truly helpful, loving partner to her prince, the better enabling him to do the important work hemust do to transform and improve the monarchy in a world of relentless change. After yesterday, myalready substantial admiration has substantially increased. She played her part faultlessly and, more

than that, with her new husband's complete concurrence they turned their marriage from an event of monarchy and nation into a true wedding, dedicated to each other and their friends and family, including their great nation.

Everything was done well, thus delivering just what everyone wanted: two deeply devoted peoplewith a great task, historic task before them, ready now together ready to do the best we well knowthem capable of.

And so the newest Royal Duke is now His Royal Highness of Cambridge, the old shire, not theUniversity and Kate gets what the Duchess of Windsor could only long for, the coveted letters HRH.True, of the many new Royal Dukes of Cambridge since the 17th century, not one has been notable

for anything other than his capacity for strong drink and wrong women and oodles of FitzCambridgechildren, royal byblows. Queen Victoria always had trouble with the Cambridges of her day, butfrom these self-same Cambridges came a pillar of the dynasty. That pillar was Queen Mary,Elizabeth II's dutiful, God fearing, monarchy reverencing grandmother... may our new duchess findsuch traits in herself. God Save the Queen (to be) and may she remain happy and glorious!

'Glamis thou art and Cawdor; and shalt be/ What thou artpromised.' ('Macbeth'; Act 1, scene 5) The much anticipatedimperial child is born July 22, 2013, and history is made.

 by Dr. Jeffrey Lant.

Author's program note. You are sleeping peacefully now, and I for one am glad of that. For you are

the child on whose fragile shoulders the weight of empire shall in due course descend. And you must be ready...

For that reason we will all come to know you very well. We shall see you in a thousand pictures, inevery mood, in every costume, in every clime, and we shall be glad to see you smile and know youare happy and well.

You are the child who will soon grow accustomed to footmen with powdered hair and palaceswhose unnumbered chambers contain the treasures of centuries, treasures which will, God willing, all be yours. However, the greatest treasure of all will be your ability to touch humanity for from thattouch comes the love of your great peoples worldwide; the peoples who bow to you because you

personify their best and reign for them. You are the favored child whom prime ministers and statesmen crave the privilege to greet. Theycome and go but all know you stay, the very symbol of stability and the promise that there willalways be an England, and that this England shall remain sceptered -- and royal.

For you, prince, the greatest musicians shall compose their most compelling and meticulousmeasures... the greatest divas shall cast off petulant airs and, curseying low, rain their haughty bestupon you... the greatest dancers shall strain every sinew and muscle so you see only grace and perfection. And scribblers like me shall keep a thesaurus near at hand, the better to select the aptwords to extol you, the lyric words, the splendid words of our splendid language, the language thatshall be called, "The King's English"... and that King shall be... you.

You are to be the cynosure of every eye, today and every day of your life... the arbiter elegantiarum... the Fountain of Honor who can with the merest motion raise the lowest to the highestand with nothing more than a single radiant smile enrich a life and make one glad to be alive.

Today your apprenticeship for majesty begins... your me'tier... your life's work immediately athand... a subject you will master before the world whose heart will always beat faster the nearer youare... for we all want to see the divinity that doth hedge... you... and so be profoundly moved.

You, world renowned from the moment of conception, are the symbol of unity in a world sorelydivided.

You, without need to face election or any process of selection whatsoever, at any time, have theluxury of honesty, integrity and forthright statement... a right you will use to our frequent advantage.

Rich beyond avarice, you will want for nothing. From this pinnacle of wealth, you must advocate for those who have nothing and need everything, looking to you as the true friend they never had andsorely need.

Remember this: there will be members of your court who will try to keep you away and distant fromyour peoples, unapproachable, arguing that your exalted status forbids such contact. Listen to such pettifogging bureaucrats at your hazard. These knighted pomposities too often misunderstand whoyou are and what your mission is. It is not to be segregated from the people, but to be these peoples'most fervent and unwavering advocate.

You reign for all, to be sure; but you reign most for those whose needs are greatest... the young, theelderly, those who suffer, those who grieve, those who live without help or hope.

You are of the blood of Diana, Princess of Wales, your grandmother who died tragically young.Take up her cause but do so without her anger and pain and desire for revenge. Make it your objective to be the "People's Prince" but with none of the baggage.

"I will be good."

It is fashionable in our "wicked cool" days to deride every social skill as pedantic, ponderous, dull, demeaning, getting in the way of the constant partying and irresponsible behavior that some will tellyou is your right. This is wrong. Your objective must always be to represent the best of what is goodabout the young, their energy, their idealism, their acute and pressing desire to improve the world, whilst avoiding their often selfish and loutish behavior. The best role model is your very ownancestor, the great queen whose monumental statue abides for the ages just outside the main gate of Buckingham Palace, Queen Victoria.

Here is the famous story...

Like you, prince, Queen Victoria was born in the purple (1819), but the odds on her becoming

sovereign were long, nowhere near as good as yours. Preceding her was her uncle the Duke of York, second son of king George III, but he died in 1827 before his brother who reigned as George IV until1830.

After his death the next son of George III became king as William IV. Had he and his wife QueenAdelaide produced a living child, he or she would have reigned, but they could not; the stillborntwin boys they produced in 1822 were the last of many disappointments. And so Victoria, Princessof Kent, whose father had died in 1820 moved closer and closer to the throne.

Finally, it was decided to disclose her increasingly likely destiny. And so her governess BaronessLehzen slipped a copy of the genealogy of the House of Hanover into one of the princess's lesson books.

After perusing it for some time, Victoria came to see that her deceased father had been next in lineafter the king, and that Queen Adelaide had no surviving children. Thus she was the heir  presumptive, likely to be the next British monarch.

After a pause, Victoria is reported to have said "I will be good", and as it turned out, she meantevery word, living them through the longest reign in British history (1837- 1901).

What being "good" means.

Years ago, I saw an incident that told me everything I ever needed to know about the man inquestion, California Governor Jerry Brown, then candidate for president. As he was exiting a

backyard picnic in New Hampshire, an elderly white-haired woman, jostled by photographers, fellon the gravel drive way.

Brown looked... and walked away, literally leaving her crumpled on the ground. He said nothing. Hedid nothing. He was clearly too important to be bothered by one frail person in need... and in aninstant he gained my undying contempt.

Here, then, is what "good" means and what you must do.

Be gracious to all. It means so much and takes such little effort.

Always offer your strong arm to those needing it. They will never forget... and always recall that

moment as one of their happiest.

Listen. And while you're listening, look the person in the eye.

Compliment freely, lavishly, and smile when you do for your smile is one of the most important onEarth, making friends and building bridges whenever you release its potent magic.

Do the good deed... whether you get recognized for it, or not. It's the right thing to do.

Work the phones. Call people who work hard for others but get no recognition... use moderntechnology and the alchemy of your voice and kind heart to change lives and spread joy.

Be gentle with scoffing Americans and particularly our thoughtlessly carping columnists whoderide, disdain and denigrate the very idea of monarchy as obsolete. Remind them that you can goabout your important work without a phalanx of armed guards who are thought necessary for every president even when buying ice cream; that you have the love and respect of your people, and sohave real security.

"The King Shall Rejoice!"

Now, it is time for fanfare as the good, loyal people of the world thrill to your arrival. For this I have

selected one of the great panegyrics by the inimitable master of monarchical music, George FridericHandel, the "Dettingen Te Deum" (HWV 283). Written in 1743, it celebrates the victorious Battle of Dettingen (1743) over the French; the last time a British sovereign lead his armies to victory in person. Learn from George II, this often undervalued and much derided of your ancestors, for without him you may not have been born a prince at all, much less an heir apparent.

Now go to any search engine and listen to Handel at his most soaring and remember we play it for you, Prince of Cambridge, "The glorious Company of the Apostles praise Thee." May it ever bethus. God Save the Queen!
