SCSBOA ROWLAND FIELD TOURNAMENT Adjudication Reflection Assistant Drum Major William Su

This report is broken up into three categories as based on the adjudication brackets: Musicality, General Effect, and Visual. Percussion included in Musicality and Auxiliary included in GE and Visual.MUSICALITY

Overall Points-Contrast in percussion**-Change in dynamics**-Coordination with percussion/phase – tempo changes**-Low Brass/Woodwind Projection-Percussion too loud-Trumpet intonations-Release – Cut offs-Field balance with the music is slightly uneven-Pitch in the brass: Tuning/Over blowing

1. SAKURAMeasure 9+: Low brass needs to bring out the melody with projection.Measure 14-16: Percussion is stronger than the saxophone entrance, needs more balance. Percussion gives away the crescendo in Measure 16 by arriving at the top part of the phrase earlier.Measure 25-33: Graduation in dynamics needs equal commitment.Measure 33: Subito – Percussion needs to drop as well.Percussion is a bit heavy, covers the melody at the cost of pushing the pulse. Trumpets: PitchOverall Band: Dynamic changes, air needs to get moving through the horns. Woodwinds bring out more projection.

2. MATSURIMeasure 5-13: Good runs by the woodwinds, phrasing issues articulate and play with energy. A solid entrance is necessary on Measure 5.Measure 36: Accelerando – Low brass entrance not up to par with a transition from 152 to 164.Measure 45: Phrasing and pitch from horns and trumpetsMeasure 53: Clean up entrance, and keep the energy throughout the phrases in the latter runs. Phrases are getting cut short.Trumpets/Percussion: Alignment of pulse when spread out on the fieldPercussion: Dynamic changes

3. MYAKUMeasure 31-33: Dynamic drop to piano decrescendo and emphasized crescendo at end not matching to conducting, at the fermata.Pit: Ahead of the beat, marimba is a tad heavyOverall Band: SIDE 1 to SIDE 2 rhythmic issuesSuggestion from adjudicator: Extend the piccolo fermata, awkward gap at end.

4. DRUM SOLOPercussion: Contrast in dynamicsSnares: Clean up

5. KOTOEarly Measures: Rise and fall (Call & Response) uniformity on the passagesMeasure 31: Bring out the woodwind sound with energy, not together on the runsBaritones/Trombones: Pitch Measure 105: Needs a solid entrance from every woodwind player. Keep up the bottom ensemble sound even throughout the brass entrance. Brass pitch strays off in the latter of their runs at this point.Overall Band: Very evident of lack of familiarity (basic note accuracy) with the music of the fourth movement. Intervals for phrasing, tonic scale & chords are lacking or not existent at all. Percussion is cluttering rhythm, evident problem with tempo on acceleration.

Page 3: Rowland Field Tournament Adjudication Review Synthesis

Phasing/Delay: The overall tempo of all the collective movements can be summarized as slower than the actual par of the beat of the music. This is a result of not knowing the music to a fuller extent, not practicing with a metronome, and sound delay on the field.

GENERAL EFFECT

Overall Points-Finish the show-Coordination between instrumental and percussion-Dull emotion (2nd half of show)

-Running out of energy-Koto

-Attention to musicality-Holes in visuals

1. SAKURAFlutes/Clarinets: Sliding through the front is not cutting itBand <-> Percussion: Dynamic coordination

Suggestion from adjudicator: CG Soloist during mallet intro2. MATSURI

Drum Major: Swaying in conducting possibly causes pulsing issues on the accelerando. There is a discrepancy between the Low Brass and the conductor on the Measure 36-37 Accelerando.Battery <-> Band: Feet are either together or feet are apart, the difference in feet placement during holds causes a visual discrepancy.

3. MYAKUOverall Band: Pulse of feet, when slow marching is off (Phrasing issue).Woodwinds: Bow visual, need attention to the hand placement Piccolo: Conflict with applause is dangerous

4. DRUM SOLOOverall Band: Upper body posture

5. KOTOTrombones: Timing of entrance and pulsesDrum Major: Conduct smaller, less body motion to define pulseBattery <-> Band: Feet are either together or feet are apart, the difference in feet placement during holds causes a visual discrepancy.

VISUAL

Overall Points-Drill design lacks good usage of negative space*** (OUT OF OUR CONTROL)-Need auxiliary support during velocity changes**-Repetitious, needs more innovative design*-First Half of Show -> Good pulse-Second Half -> Sloppy pulse-Define the depth of the design of the show

1. SAKURAOverall Band: Clean, overall, good alteration of step size

2. MATSURIFlutes: Initial Step Off, Interval issues on latter setsSnare: Step size discrepancyClarinets: Early turn SIDE 1 50-yard line Alto Saxes: Off step, off hip orientation/alignment

3. MYAKUOverall Band: Step control issues, Form development into clusters not articulate or defined, Use back/abdominal strength for the bow

4. DRUM SOLOOverall Band: Need a VISUAL throughout the entire drum solo

5. KOTOFlutes: Off step, messy – back to diagonal Snare: Swaying – physical continuity Overall Band: No unity between the ideas of the sets
