The Mechanical and Aero
space Engineering Department
at New Mexico State University
will give graduate students the
opportunity to learn and devel
op ingenuity in a new graduate
program.
Crystal Lay, director of Aero
space and Special Projects at
NMSU, said the university has
already given the goahead to
start the program and has given
the approval to hire two faculty
members. However, it is going
to take a bit more than that to
!"#$ #%"$ &'(!')*$ '+,,-,!$ "./ciently, Lay said.
“What I am worried about
right now is the state cutting
the funds for the program and
not being able to hire the rest
of the faculty, which is another
four,” Lay said.
Lay said the university will
provide funds to hire two fac
ulty members, and additional
faculty may be funded by the
state.
“If the state cuts the funds,
we’re going to run the depart
ment by the ear, miraculously,”
Lay said.
Lay said there is already an
agreement between NMSU and
the Universidad Autonoma de
Chihuahua, to bring 20 gradu
ate students into the program.
There are also a few undergrad
uate students at NMSU who are
ready to start the program in
the fall.
Justin Bowyer, who is in his
/'0#$1")'$(.$!')2+)#"$03%((4$)#$NMSU, said he started his mas
ter’s degree in mechanical engi
neering because the aerospace
master’s degree did not exist.
Now that it does, Bowyer said
he will merge into the aero
space classes for his graduate
degree.
Corporations, including
Honeywell and Boeing, and
White Sands Missile Range
encouraged the department to
push for the program, a process
that took about two years, Lay
said. And in light of Spaceport
America starting its operations
next year, the need for such
programs is even greater, Lay
said.

Although H1N1 cases have
decreased significantly,
healthcare professionals say
the dangers of H1N1 have not
yet passed, and New Mexico
State University Health Center
personnel are gearing up for
another potential outbreak.
Dr. Sidney Webb, University
Health Service clinic director,
said Employee Health Cen

cases of H1N1, or swine flu,
during the fall semester. Stu
dent Health Center personnel
diagnosed 512 H1N1 cases, 14
of which were diagnosed in De

“Right now our cases are
going way down,” Webb said.
“We haven’t had any this week
that I’m aware of.”
NMSU has 1,000 doses of
H1N1 vaccine available for dis
tribution, Webb said. Webb
said he plans to gather a team
of other medical personnel,
including NMSU nursing stu
dents, to distribute H1N1 vac
cines to NMSU students, be
ginning in the dormitories in
late January.
“Universities are more at
risk [for H1N1 epidemics] be
cause of the younger popula
tion,” Webb said. “[The group]
most at risk for H1N1 are un
derclassmen in dormitories.”
H1N1 vaccinations will also
be available for walkins at the
Student Health Center, and
any leftover vaccines will be
distributed at the Employee
Health Center. H1N1 vaccina
tions are free to NMSU stu
dents and staff, Webb said.
Webb said Memorial Medi
cal Center in Las Cruces has
5,000 H1N1 vaccinations
available and will host a drive
through distribution on Satur
day. Webb said MMC is very
efficient, and he recommended
that students living offcampus
get vaccinated at MMC. MMC
also distributes H1N1 vaccina
tions for free.
“[MMC] has it down to a sci
ence,” Webb said. “It’s a good
deal for Las Cruces.”
Webb said everyone, es
pecially campus residents,
should get vaccinated for H1N1
because it is a serious illness.
According to the Depart
ment of Health, a total of 47
New Mexicans have died due
to complications of H1N1 as of
December 2009.
“[H1N1] is something brand
new, something that’s in front
of us,” Webb said. “It’s some
thing that has our attention.”
Webb said it is likely NMSU
has not seen the last of H1N1.
“January and February are
usually the worst months for
seasonal flu,” Webb said. “It’s
very possible H1N1 will come
back. Getting vaccinated is a
good idea.”

The Aggie men’s basketball team battled WAC opponent Fresno State on Saturday, and thanks to hot shooting in the second half, came out on top 8677. And now for the rest of the story: The Aggies came out in the second half red hot on offense. It took NMSU only seven possessions to take the lead. The Aggies scored on six of those seven possessions thanks, in part, to three offen

two points. Sparked by three straight threepointers by Gibson and Young, the Aggies went on a 170 run in less than four minutes. NMSU pushed the tempo all night. The release of the nonconference New Mexico State University football schedule revealed four teams and a noteworthy game to be played in late September against Kansas University. The Aggies will travel to Lawrence, Kan., on Sept. 25 to play the Kansas Jayhawks for the third game of the 2010 Aggie season. The Aggies will also travel to El Paso on Sept. 18 for the annual meeting with I10 rival UTEP. The Aggies’ two nonconference home games include a season opener against San Diego State on Sept. 11 and a nonconference play conclusion against instate rival UNM on Oct. 9. “The game against San Diego State is considered our winnable game,” said Athletics Director
McKinley Boston. “Our winnable game is always scheduled as a home game against a team we have a good chance of beating.” Although conferenceplay games have not yet been scheduled, nonconference games are set years in advance, and the amount of nonconference games NMSU plays is based on a philosophy dating back four years. Boston said the total amount of games the football team can play is based on where the game against Hawaii is played. If NMSU travels to Hawaii for the season matchup, the Aggies may schedule up to 13 total games. On years the Hawaii game is played in Las Cruces, the Aggies may schedule a total of 12 games. Because the 2010 Hawaii game will be at home game, NMSU will be allowed a 12game schedule.
Since eight games must be put aside for conference play, four games are left for nonconference teams. Two of those games are put aside for the annual rivalry games with UTEP and UNM. Boston said the home and away games with the rivalry teams alternate every year. This season, UTEP will be the away game and UNM will be the home game. With the rivalry games considered, only two games are left. A twoyear contract was signed with San Diego State, stating the two
teams would agree to play each other at each location, Boston said. The last game on the schedule is considered “the money game,” Boston said. NMSU will receive an estimated $800,000 from KU for traveling to play the Jayhawks. “The ideal schedule is one winnable game, one money game, our two rivalry games, and all of the conference games,” Boston said. “We always try to set it up so there are an even amount of home and away games, or more home games
than away games.” Boston said nonconference teams have been scheduled beyond the 2010 season as well. A twoyear contract has been signed with Ohio University starting in 2011, and the University of Georgia has also been scheduled. Boston said agreements have also been made with Texas and Minnesota.
