ON THE 49-60 LOSS TO SUNSHINE COAST LIGHTNING We’re having some good patches, but aren’t able to find consistency for four quarters. I’m very pleased with some of the work the defenders are doing and everyone is working really hard. We just need to make sure that is being transferred into effective work on the court. Our options for the ball carrier aren’t quite there at the moment. We’re playing with one option and we need multiple options for the ball carrier, so that’s something we’re working hard to address. The Lightning on the other hand are a very strong team. They’re playing great netball in the moment and that’s the challenge for us.

ON THE TEAM’S FOURTH QUARTER FIGHT BACK AGAINST SUNSHINE COAST It’s encouraging (the Firebirds reduced the margin to two goals at one point during the final quarter) and especially so because we’re not playing our best netball. We recognise that and know we’re having those lapses and lulls. If we can put together more consistency we’ll be right in the match. At the moment, our opposition are doing it better. We need to value the ball better, create more options and not be affected by the opposition riding us and disrupting us.

ON THE LADDER-LEADING GIANTS They’ve lost Kim Green to injury and we know what it’s like to lose a pivotal player at a very important time with Mahalia Cassidy. It took a big chunk out of our team and they have to face that challenge now with Green out.

COACH'S PREVIEW

Our focal point in coming up against them is valuing possession of the ball, making sure we have multiple options for the ball-carrier and being resilient when the body comes on us. The Giants will come out strong and contest every ball. If we give one option, they’ll come through and take it. We need to do more work off the ball to be competitive against them.

ON THE RETURN OF ERIN BURGER FROM SOUTH AFRICA Having Erin back will add stability in the attack end and enable us to put Caitlyn Nevins back into her preferred position of wing attack. It’s vitally important. It puts Caity closer to the goalers and Erin’s been really consistent with her play. She has been able to pick up a couple of tips and intercepts. She’ll jump straight off the plane and straight onto the court.

ON THE ROOKIE FIREBIRDS MAKING THEIR MARK THIS SEASON They’re still working on their games and every bit of court time they get is invaluable for them and the team. It’s critical for us to build those minutes. Every time they hop out on court they’ll be that little bit better in the long run. It’s exciting for our future.

"OUR FOCAL POINT IN COMING UP AGAINST THEM IS VALUING POSSESSION OF THE BALL, MAKING SURE WE HAVE MULTIPLE OPTIONS FOR THE BALL-CARRIER AND BEING RESILIENT WHEN THE BODY COMES ON US."

GRETEL TIPPETTW I T HQ&A

YOU WERE ORIGINALLY A BASKETBALLER IN THE WNBL. HOW DID YOU TRANSITION TO NETBALL? I had joined a local netball club with my friend to stay fit. After the first training session I got a call from the Golden South Jaguars coach. One of their shooters had fallen pregnant, so I slipped right into the line-up. It meant my first game of netball was at state league level. Two months later Queensland held under 21 trials. I think my height played a big part in getting me into that side, but (now Firebirds assistant coach) Jenny Brazel was the coach and saw something in me. She took me under her wing and taught me a lot.

TELL US ABOUT THE MOMENT YOU FIRST FELL IN LOVE WITH NETBALL I played my first state league game for Golden South Jaguars at my old school venue at All Saints Anglican School. I graduated in 2010 and had so many memories of playing sport on those courts – netball, basketball, badminton, you name it. To step out there felt like home, but on the other hand I was completely out of my element playing netball. I was way out of my league. I played a half in goal shooter and I think I shot about nine air balls, I was very nervous. But there was something about that game. Even though I came off the court and thought “what am I doing?”, I looked up at mum and gave her a look. I just thoroughly enjoyed every second of being out there, challenging myself and playing a game that was so fast-paced, physical and athletic.

WHAT’S YOUR MOST TREASURED CHILDHOOD MEMORY GROWING UP ON THE GOLD COAST? We always got down to the beach as much as we could. I wanted to be a professional surfer, but unfortunately I was a bit too lanky for that. My Dad put an end to those dreams pretty quickly when it took two years to teach me to stand up. Whenever it rained my brothers and I used to take our boogie boards and slide down north Burleigh hill. That hill soon turned into our exercise regime to get us fit for pre-season. Kurt and Joel would take me over and we’d run the stairs. We used to have a lot of fun there rain, hail or shine.

WHAT'S YOUR FAVOURITE LOCAL SPOT TO GRAB A BITE? The Paddock Bakery. It’s right around the corner from our family home. My friends and I often ride our bikes there. The food is amazing and it’s an awesome place to catch up.

WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON TONIGHT’S CLASH WITH GIANTS NETBALL? The Giants are a very smart team under the guidance of Julie Fitzgerald. They’ve got players with experience like ex-Firebird Bec Bulley and international influence with Serena Guthrie and Jo Harten. I personally can’t wait to come up against Bec. I have so much respect for her and learnt a lot from her. Rose used to cringe every time we’d come up against one another at training because neither of us would take a backwards step. Our team has gone back to the drawing board after last week’s Sunshine Coast loss and we’ll give it everything for a full 60 minutes.

The return leg of Suncorp Super Netball’s rivalry round unfolded last weekend, with a bevy of important results helping shape the ladder heading into the second half of the season.

In Perth, West Coast Fever thrashed Adelaide Thunderbirds 57-40 to exact revenge for their tight round one loss at the hands of the South Australians. Playing under an open roof at Perth Arena, the Fever’s new-look defensive duo of Stacey Francis and Courtney Bruce wreaked havoc in the second half to blow the contest open.

In Sydney, New South Wales Swifts blew a four goal three quarter time lead to fall to Giants Netball 56-59. The home side were flying off the back of near perfect shooting from attacking duo Sam Wallace and Helen Housby, while goal keeper Sarah Klau took three intercepts and a rebound during the third quarter to set the table for an unlikely Swifts win.

But the Giants wouldn’t be denied, romping home a 17-10 fourth frame to seal victory and maintain top spot on the table.

Sunshine Coast Lightning drew first blood in their burgeoning rivalry with the Lorna Jane Queensland Firebirds, defeating the reigning ANZ champions 60-49 at USC Stadium. Queensland came within two points of their rivals during the final frame, but ultimately lost every quarter en route to a result that leaves them in fourth spot - one point clear of Collingwood Magpies in fifth.

A surging Vixens posted their fourth consecutive competition win and inflicted Collingwood’s fourth defeat in seven games in their 60-56 besting of the Magpies. The black and white trimmed the Vixens six goal lead to three with less than two minutes remaining before shooter Mwai Kumwenda scored to put her side out of reach. The result leaves the Vixens one point off the summit of the ladder heading into round eight.

The University of Queensland recently announced a total of 57 sporting scholarships, including six to Firebirds players. UQ Sport Chief Executive Mr Bryan Pryde said the UQ Sporting Scholarship program has grown significantly. “2017 is by far the biggest year for sporting scholarships at UQ, not only in terms of the number awarded, but also the number of donors supporting the initiative.

Scholarship holders benefit from access to UQ Sport’s health and fitness facilities, as well as athlete workshops, academic liaison, support and tutoring – all delivered through the UQ Sport Academy.
