1 Dear Parents / Caregivers & Whanau As you will read in this week’s newsletter we have had some great recent successes achieved by students in our school. Our Senior students have also been dealing with the stresses of prelim exams and those results will be important as they form the basis for further work and also derived grades. The experience of sitting exams, while never pleasant, is important to prepare them for the externals at the end of year. The government has recently announced further resourcing for learning support with the delivery of 623 Learning Support Coordinators across the country. We have been fortunate in our Kahui Ako (Community of Learning) to have received an allocation of 4 learning support coordinators. How we develop this resource and use it to its best potential, is currently being explored. At the end of last week I had the pleasure of visiting a number of our rural contributing schools and had discussions on how we can develop stronger pathways for students coming through to RLHS. Many of you may have seen the article published on the front page of the Weekend Post on Saturday regarding NCEA where 2 of our students featured prominently in the article. I would just like to take this opportunity to reemphasise the positive impact of the professional support given by our staff to all our students to help them develop the pathways they wish to follow. The results are clear to see. On the 16th of August, 19 RLHS students attended the Bay of Plenty Science Fair. Our students worked very hard and put a fantastic effort into their Science Investigations and Displays. This played a huge part of their success at the fair as we won three prizes.
Stella Weston won for her work on
Climate Change and received $200. Very well done Stella!!
Caitlin Lang and Menna Lloyd-Jones were awarded $100 - second place for their work on testing different flour in baking
Lukas Joy was awarded $20 - Highly Commended for his work on
Agustina Gonzalez Diaz has earned her place in the Bay of Plenty Artistic Gymnastics Squad. She is one of only 7 gymnasts chosen from the Bay to compete at Step 6. Agustina will compete at the New Zealand Gymnastics Championships in Auckland starting on the 1st October. This national competition hosts the best gymnasts from each region to represent their province. Competition week is a huge week with training and competing each day. Currently, Agustina trains 12 hours a week at Te Puke Gymsports. Alongside her normal training in Te Puke she will also train with the Bay of Plenty Squad over the next few weekends in the build up to nationals.
This is a prestigious competition and Agustina has worked hard this season to earn her place.
Well done!! We wish her all the best.

GREAT DAY OUT AT THE ONE TEAM UNIFORM SERVICES PROGRAMME
Lazarus Dixon Amotawa, Tanner Lawson and Gabriel Santos really enjoyed the challenge of being on the OTUS (One Team Uniform Services) Programme. OTUS offers students a taste-tester to military training such as drill, military fitness tests, search and rescue including water rescues. Also included is self-defence, adventure based learning activities with high ropes, Waka Ama, visits to Military bases/camps, team building, communication and leadership activities. Students are expected to work to the best of their ability, turn up on time and do as they are instructed. This is a reflection of Armed Forces culture and training. No doubt, our boys were up to the mark!
The following assessments have been set down to take place within the next two weeks. There may be times where, due to unforeseen circumstances, changes will need to occur. This will be done in consultation with the class(es) concerned.
In Week 7 Term 3 the 3 11MAT Maths classes are sitting AS 91036 over 3 periods. All students need to be at school for all 3 periods according to the timetable below. If your child is going to be away for any of these periods, please ring Mr Shaun English (ext 261) as soon as possible.
All Visual art students are busy working on portfolios at present. These projects are external assessments worth 12 credits (year 11 and 12) and 14 credits (year 13). As they are external assessments, failure to submit finished folios on time will result in a Not Achieved grade. Due dates are as follows:
Year 11 (Paint and Print / Sculpture/Mixed Media and Photography)
International author, speaker and trainer, Patrick Sherratt will be visiting Rotorua again to present his interactive and entertaining exam-preparation seminar to our senior students. In this two-hour public presentation, Patrick will offer a five-step approach to prepare for exams while building in solutions to many of the common challenges students face in the lead up to exams. If your son or daughter is having problems getting motivated to study, procrastinates, gets distracted easily, has a poor memory or suffers from exam nerves, this will be a "must-attend" seminar. Held in the school library at 11.30 – 1.30 on Wednesday 16th of October, this seminar will cost $20 per person. If you would like your child to attend, registrations and payments can be made at the student reception

FROM THE HEALTH & WELLNESS CENTRE
The flu season is definitely upon us! Here are a few helpful hints for you and
your whanau:
What you CAN do
If you have an infection of the ear, nose, throat, sinuses and / or chest, most likely caused by a virus – Antibiotics aren’t effective. Antibiotics won’t make you feel better or recover faster, and may cause unwanted side effects (eg diarrhea, thrush, rash or allergic reactions). There are no instant cures for viral colds and flu but some of the following suggestions may help make you feel more comfortable:
Rest – A warm comfortable environment will help your immune system fight off the viruses that cause
colds and flu. Stay at home as this will avoid spreading the infection to others.
Drink plenty of fluids.
Paracetamol or Ibuprofen pharmacy products – Use to relive aches and pains. Ask your doctor or
pharmacist about the most appropriate medicine and dose. CHILDREN SHOULD NOT BE
GIVEN ASPIRIN-BASED PRODUCTS.
Steam inhalations or nasal rinse – Breathing in steam during a hot shower can help you clear mucus from
blocked sinuses, relieve nasal congestion and chest tightness. Nasal saline irrigation may provide relief for
some people. Again ask your pharmacist for advice on products.
A decongestant – These may help ‘dry’ a runny nose or relive blocked sinuses. Ask your pharmacist about
an appropriate medication but do not use for more than 5 days.
Lozenges and gargles – Antiseptic throat lozenges or gargling either warm salted water or dispersible
aspirin may help to relieve a sore throat.
Prevent spread of infection: cover your mouth when sneezing or coughing. Wash your hands after
It was a wet, cold and windy night for the boys on Tuesday night. Despite the weather the boys played a hard,
tough game and came out on top, with a well-deserved 6 - 2 win against Taupo. Player of the Day Callum Downes.
