Golden Bears NOTE FROM CAL 6

Greetings Golden Bear Battalion Alumni, Family, and Friends!

We are excited to start a new school year with our largest freshman class in recent history. We just completed a short field training exercise at Camp Parks and the entire Battalion?s motivation and energy was outstanding!

To update you on the latest happenings in the program, let?s begin with the Spring commissions from May, when we were pleased to host COL Phil Deppert, Commandant of the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center at the Presidio of Monterey, as our guest speaker. We commissioned ten new Second Lieutenants at this ceremony - Joseph Daniszewski (AD - Armor), Douglas Kim (USAR ? Military Intelligence), Anjanay Kumar (AD - Military Intelligence), Albert Lai (AD ? Air Defense Artillery), Johnson Lamwatthananon (AD ? Infantry), Steven Montoya (CAARNG ? Military Intelligence), Ian Panlilio (CAARNG ? Infantry), Jacob Planchon (AD ? Field Artillery), Jason Rozal (CAARNG ? Military Police), and Anli Tran (AD ? Field Artillery).

For Cadet Summer Training, we had great success sending a total of 15 Cadets to various courses and cultural experiences ? achieving a 100% graduation rate at all training opportunities including 10 Cadets completing Advanced Camp and 3 Cadets completing Basic Camp at Fort Knox, KY. Cadets Hui, Monlux, Nepomuceno, and Robbins also completed the Cultural Understanding and Language Proficiency (CULP) program travelling to Albania, Malawi, Sri Lanka, and Thailand, respectively. Cadet Mendez earned his Airborne wings and Cadet Winter earned his Air Assault wings. Finally, Cadet Bulik-Sullivan travelled to Latvia and Lithuania to study Russian as part of Project Global Officer (GO). We are very proud of all of these accomplishments as our Cadets continue to grow the tradition of excellence of the Golden Bear Battalion.

Golden Bears NOTE FROM CAL 6

At the start of this fall semester, we also commissioned two additional officers that had summer school requirements ? 2LTs Tony Chang (AD ? Chaplain Corps) and Sang Ko (AD- Signal Corps). This brought our Fiscal Year 2016 total to 14 commissions ? an historic number for the Golden Bear program and a great, positive reflection of our growing strength at UC Berkeley.

On the Cadre side, we bid a fond farewell to our Recruiting Operations Officer, Mr. Joe Margolies, who departed Berkeley to take a job in his hometown of Stockton, CA. After nearly three years with the program, we thank him for the indelible mark he has left on the program by recruiting such outstanding officer candidates and we wish him all the best moving forward. We also say goodbye to 2LT Johnson Lamwatthananon and 2LT Jason Rozal, who are both off to their BOLC training courses after spending a few months with the program as Gold Bar Recruiters. Thank you for all your hard work in support of the program! We?d like to extend a warm welcome to MAJ Ben Raphael, a recent Haas MBA Graduate, who has joined the program as a U.S. Army Reservist currently assisting with our Ranger Challenge team?s preparation for their upcoming competition and 2LT Albert Lai, one of our recent graduates, who will take over as our Gold Bar Recruiter for the remainder of the fall term.

Please do not hesitate to contact us or drop by the program anytime you are around campus ? we?d love to hear from you!

Bears Lead the Way!

SUMMER TRAINING

In the words of CDT M endez: "This summer I had the privilege to attend Airborne School hosted at Fort Benning, Georgia. Here I was given the necessary training that would prepare me to perform five static line jumps out of a C130 airplane. This was a three week training course broken down into three parts: ground week, tower week, and jump week. Throughout this course I learned a variety of skills such as rigging a T-11 parachute and performing proper parachute landing falls. All this training would come together in the final week where I would execute three hollywood jumps, a mass exit jump, and a combat equipment jump in order to earn my parachutist badge and graduate from this course. "

RANGER CHALLENGECadet Zachary Winter is the Captain of the Ranger Challenge Team this Fall! Cadet Winter has also attended Air Assault School this summer, and continues to be a positive and outstanding addition to the team. Bears Lead the Way!
