Rotary Club of Somerton Park Inc. | Chartered 7 April 1988 Club Bulletin October is vocaonal service month and whilst our club parcipates in vocaonal service through the Pride of Workmanship Awards to Minda employees and the sponsoring of young people to aend the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA), we may not always have a clear concept of what vocaonal service is all about. Here's what Rotary Interna- onal has to say about it. Vocaonal service stems from the Object of Rotary which is a philosophical statement of Rotary’s purpose and the responsibilies of all Rotarians. The concept of vocaonal ser- vice stems from the Second Object, which calls on Rotarians to “encourage and foster”: • High ethical standards in business and professions • The recognion of the worthiness of all useful occupaons • The dignifying of each Rotarian’s occupaon as an opportunity to serve society As a Rotarian, how can you put these ideals into acon? Consider these suggesons: • Talk about your vocaon in your club, and take me to learn about fellow members’ vocaons. • Use your professional skills to serve a community. • Pracce your profession with integrity, and inspire others to behave ethically through your own words and acons. • Help a young person achieve his or her career aspira- ons. • Guide and encourage others in their professional de- velopment. If you do any of these things, you are performing vocaonal service. And if vocaonal service movates and energizes you, then you’re in the right place, because vocaonal ser- vice is the very essence of Rotary. It is what sets Rotary apart from other service organizaons. So I challenge all members in October to consider these points and how you may foster and promote vocaonal service and Rotary through your own profession. October is vocational service month and whilst our club participates in vocational service through the Pride of Workmanship Awards to Minda employees and the sponsoring of young people to attend the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA), we may not always have a clear concept of what vocational service is all about. Here's what Rotary Interna-tional has to say about it.
Vocational service stems from the Object of Rotary which is a philosophical statement of Rotary’s purpose and the responsibilities of all Rotarians. The concept of vocational ser-vice stems from the Second Object, which calls on Rotarians to “encourage and foster”:
• High ethical standards in business and professions • The recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations • The dignifying of each Rotarian’s occupation as an opportunity to serve society
As a Rotarian, how can you put these ideals into action? Consider these suggestions: • Talk about your vocation in your club, and take time to learn about fellow members’ vocations. • Use your professional skills to serve a community. • Practice your profession with integrity, and inspire others to behave ethically through your own words and actions. • Help a young person achieve his or her career aspira-tions. • Guide and encourage others in their professional de-velopment.
If you do any of these things, you are performing vocational service. And if vocational service motivates and energizes you, then you’re in the right place, because vocational ser-vice is the very essence of Rotary. It is what sets Rotary apart from other service organizations.
So I challenge all members in October to consider these points and how you may foster and promote vocational service and Rotary through your own profession. For further reading see;
Wild Dog Advisory Group. Geoff spoke on the sub-ject of Wild Dog Predation in SA with a well illustrat-ed pictorial presentation. He indicated the scope of the problem as Australia wide and showed some graphics and photos of the fence, which is designed around cattle to the north and sheep to the south and to keep dogs north of it. He presented the prob-lem of dog predation on both sheep and cattle with some graphic photo evidence, and statistics on the maintenance, upkeep and effectiveness of the fence. Geoff claimed that SA is where QLD was 25 years ago and that without control or a major breach of the fence things could only get worse. Geoff finished his talk with an outline of the re-sponse in the ‘Biteback’ monitoring, baiting and trapping program, but indicated that trapping need-ed to be expanded and that trapping skills were light on. He also indicted directions which might need to be taken.
Geoff fielded a number of questions and we heard some comments from both Duncan McFetridge and Adrian Pedrick who both attended the breakfast and clearly indicated an understanding of the problem.

Brenley reminded all of the Hat Day joint meeting with an international theme and the Group 8 evening on 11 November. Member were also asked to check out their BBQ duty in October (see later in bulletin)
John introduced guest Hayley Everuss, State Manager of OzHarvest. An engaging and thoughtful speaker Hey-ley describe the food rescue and redistribution service in its 10th anniversary year and its growth from a single unit in Sydney to a burgeoning national presence. She pointed out the obvious project stimulator of tons of left over prepared food going to waste each day and the desire to do something with it. Demand is from both food businesses who no doubt don’t want to see good food go to waste, and from charities who need contributions. She pointed out their complementarity with Foodbank which deals in different food spectrum and the challenges of placing prepared food, specially with institutions which may be locked into set menus. Hayley pointed out that all types of food come their way, even from well know producers in the Barossa Valley, and that they work with about 80 charities in Adelaide. Perhaps most stunning were her statistics on food waste in our world and communities, details of which are on their website.
Our second speaker was Geoff Power, who has held a number of senior positions in the agricul-tural industry in SA. Geoff owns farming property at Orroroo and Jamestown and is cur-rently the chair of the

Don received the following information from OzHarvest re food waste in Australia which is itself "food for thought". Australians waste up to 20% of the food we buy. For every 5 bags of groceries we carry home, we throw away 1 of them. Australians throw away food worth $7.8 billion a year. The average household wastes food worth $1036 each year.
Australians dump over 4 million tonnes of food per year, that's 178kg per person per year sent to landfill. Of every 10pieces of fruit or vegetables grown by suppliers, between 2 and 4 pieces are rejected by supermarkets, usually because they don't meet the excessively strict cos-metic standards of colour, shape and size. Dumping 1kg of beef also wastes 50 000 litres of water it took to produce that meat. Throwing out 1kg of white rice also wastes 2835 litres of water. More that 25% of school lunches end up in the dustbin.

2012 Shiraz Colour:-Medium depth crimson with pink, purple hues. Nose:- Ripe Satsuma plums and Raspberries leap out of the glass with lovely biscuit sweetness and brambly spice adding to the complexity. Palate:-Juicy plumbs and stewed Rhubarb fruit flows over the tongue with pepper and spice following closely behind. The wine is medium bodied but with loads of flavour and plenty of silky tannins to balance the sweet fruit. Quite a complex wine with hints of Black Olive and Aniseed and a long pepper and spicy finish.
2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Colour:-Medium depth crimson with purple hues. Nose:-Juicy Blueberries and Black Currant dominate the aroma with hints of Licorice, Black Olive and briary spice.
