BACKGROUND OF VOCATIONAL SERVICE IN ROTARY
Whence came the ideas for Vocational Service in Rotary?
Actually, the founding club’s sole purpose was vocational service in a social context.
Rotary’s founder, Paul Harris formed a small club of businessmen in Chicago with the idea that business leaders should meet periodically to enjoy camaraderie and to enlarge their circle of business and professional acquaintances.
These early "Rotarians" realized that fellowship and mutual self-interest were not enough to keep a club of busy professionals meeting each week. Reaching out to improve the lives of the less fortunate proved to be an even more powerful motivation. The Rotary commitment to service began in 1907, when the Rotary Club of Chicago donated a horse to a preacher. The man's own horse had died, and because he was too poor to buy another one, he was unable to make the rounds of his churches and parishioners. A few weeks later, the club constructed Chicago's first public lavatory. With these inaugural projects, Rotary became the world's first service-club organization. Founding precepts included emphasis on the importance of all vocations.
The work history of Paul Harris, the founder of Rotary, explains his views on the value of all workers. Before practicing law he spent several years, traveling the World, working as a farmer, cattle boat sailor, and mineral salesman. He recognized the value and worth of all occupations. This is reflected in the second part of the Object of Rotary that calls for Rotarians to apply high ethical standards in their businesses and professions, recognize the worthiness of all useful occupations, and to consider their own occupations as opportunities to serve society.
Today’s society provides numerous challenges to vocational success. In the U.S. we have a serious problem with illiteracy, poverty, drugs, and health issues. Corporate executives have been ethically challenged. Developing countries have the same problems magnified many times over. In Georgia there are 600,000 persons in need of adult education services. Only about 50,000 are being served. Displaced factory workers need more education and training opportunities. Illiteracy is a large and costly problem.
