Glisse culture and creativity
Knowledge comes from experience... hands on. All rossignols
products derive from their observations taken in the field. the
design team for the major line of collections show their
impas-sioned commitment with their at-tention to detail of the
functional aspects. rossingol have always made their mark in
textiles and their consistency and evolution are valued. tenacity
and creativity are two words that could also be used to describe
the faithful presence of Jean-Charles de Castelba-jac. A fruitful
collaboration spanning 10 years that clearly justifies popping a
few champagne corks. Fashionable, creative but above all high tech,
this extremely developed Nordic clothing fulfils the demands of the
most elite sports enthusiasts and the life style that wins races.

style of this product. Its a mixture of technical apti-tude and
lifestyle to bring a flash of fashion to what is often a rigid
circuit. Nowadays the runners person-alities are more modern so we
want to offer them a range that is more suited to them, explains
Gregory Delamarre textile product manager. but what started out as
an internal idea will now soon be distributed in a small circle of
mountain shops. To begin with we wanted to produce a trendy
sweatshirt inspired by sports and fashion graphics. As it was a hit
within the company we decided to produce a sweatshirt inspired by
the Olympic Games for Vancouver. And as this also became a success
we have ended up doing a whole collection. It is a progressive
process. We move forward step by step, says Gregory Delamarre.

thE vALuEs oF rACINGAvid admirers know the weight of the racing
universe and their sporting exploits and for Gregory Delama-rre it
was natural to offer them a means of express-ing their passion in
their everyday clothes. The idea is also to create better media
coverage of the World Cup. In France we dont speak enough about the
circuit like they do in Austria or Switzerland, and it is
nevertheless very exceptional in sporting terms when a runner wins
a globe at the end of a season, this performance should be
appreciated for its real value. And whilst the runners are plunged
into a new season of emotion, work and engagements, an
effer-vescence of fashion travels the world of racing.

this is the story of an invention that is prac-tically invisible
because it is almost com-pletely integrated. how can you guess that
there is a climbing harness in these trousers? only the belay loop
is visible. For a committed fre-erider, an improving skier on a
glacier such as the valle Blanche, this type of invention is
undeni-able progress in safety.
Anne bauvois one of the few female mountain guides in France,
had a light bulb moment. I was working in la Grave and every
morning my clients and I had to put on our harnesses, it was a real
pain! I won-dered then if it could be possible to integrate the
harness directly inside the trousers Anne, who climbs at level 7b
and who has climbed some of the most beautiful routes in the Alps
or gone on solo expeditions to Pakistan is not the type of person
to abandon an idea easily. Pigheaded? No, persevering and
imaginative. After throughout many races in la Grave, the project
had ripened. At the foot of la Mei-je the glaciers are not quite as
docile as you would imagine, therefore freeriding is technical:

think about one more piece of equipment, a harness, as they will

lightest harnesses on the market was selected. The big question
was: how do we integrate it inside the trousers whilst respecting

Throughout the discussion it appears that it is the learned mix of
nostalgia and modernism, which cements Charlies universe to the
1907 collection. It is not melancholy, but positive creation that
allows space for imagina-tion and dreams. I think the idea was to
remind peo-ple that Rossignol doesnt date back to yesterday but is
a very French designer, with a long and rich history that has made
its reputation what it is today. even if the greater part of their
collections are in parallel with the present modern trends, their
1907 range is here to remind us that it is an authentic ski brand

uvre facilite.
thinsulate? does that mean something to you? the labourers who
work on the pipelines in the Great Canadian North know exactly what
it is. they even owe their lives to this mate-rial. these men are
exposed, during blizzards, to chills of minus sixty degrees they
are kitted out with specially designed outfits using thinsulate
padding. Due to the amazing performance of this magic fabric
Rossignol decided to integrate it into the clothing to benefit
skiers. Manufactured by 3M, the American giant, Thinsulate is
simply the thinnest fibre, from where hails its name Thin-sulate,
and the worlds first in insulation. To explain simply, its theory
is to trap air in the heart of the ultra fine fibres, and you
obtain what you call a static effect. body heat is con-served, even
better it is reflected towards the skin. The Thinsulate comes in
the form of rolls of fibre, so it is not necessary to create
compartments as you must do for down. Stitching is reduced to a
minimum and it is easy to use.

A FIrst For rossIGNoLRossignol is the fi rst manufacturer in
europe to have access to the Rolls Royce of Thinsulate, the
Plati-num. It is an assembly of different padding (there are
approximately twenty types of them depending on the required
needs). This cocktail offers perfect thermal insulation but also
exceptional comfort. The Thinsulate Stretch (one of the components
of Plati-num) is a little secret weapon: it has the capacity to
stretch in both directions, horizontally and vertically. You can
imagine the amplitude of movements this enables These are top
quality materials that ne-cessitate years of research in American
laboratories in Saint-Paul Minnesota. The secret of its fabrication
is one of the best guarded in the United States. Itsi a clever soul
who fi nds out the manufacturing process or even has a slight
glimpse of a machine in action making this magical fabric. The
engineers wanted it lightweight, strong, resistant, washable,
comfortable and quick drying. Contrary to down which retains
hu-midity, Thinsulate does not hold any water vapour at all, you
can quickly understand the benefi ts that can
be drawn practising the sport which concerns us, ski-ing. After
a long run in the forest, the body heats up, perspires and dampens
the layers of clothing. Once back on the chair lift, sitting still,
the skier gets cold very quickly and discomfort intervenes. Studies
have shown that a damp body loses thirty percent of its resistance
against the cold, worth thinking about In the last few years
manufacturers have particularly focused on the waterproofi ng
qualities of the cloth-ing, it was a Schmerber dictatorship. Of
course, pro-tecting oneself from exterior aggressions is
impor-tant, but we have forgotten by the wayside the notion of
insulation. here it is, brilliantly rehabilitated with Thinsulate
Platinum.
Thinsulate is quite simply the thinnest and best insulating fi
bre in the world.

the 1907 col-lections, Jean-Charles de Castelbajac and Claire
Stanislas have the upper hand on the fitting. It is this team that
ensures the correlation between the note-book of specifications for
the fit, look and comfort of the products. We receive prototypes
for each collec-tion from the factory. each of the prototypes is
fitted on a live mannequin so we can validate the products general
look and comfort. Also, being sportswear it is imperative that
there are no difficulties or hin-drances whilst moving. During the
fittings we verify that the model conforms to the correct sizing
chart. If the model complies as it is, then its perfect. If not we
do the necessary adjustments, details Claire Stanislas. Concerning
the more complex models,
the cutting lines must be realised internally with the factory
providing the patterns. Mislaying informa-tion is the major
problem, this is why we dont waste time when asking for the
patterns. A more frequent problem concerning the trousers, as it is
imperative that all measurements are correct with the appro-priate

If there are utility inventions for the public, the Magnestick
is undeniably one of them. Who has never had chills down their
spine when see-ing their children on a chairlift? There is of
course the security bar but what happens if it is not pulled down?
Or, if the child wriggles and slides underneath the bar? The
Magnestick removes this legitimate fear for parents. Kitted out
with a special waistcoat, whilst seated on the chair lift each
child has their back fi rmly stuck to the seat until they reach the
top. how does it work? The Magnstick, as its name denotes, carries
a powerful magnet. As soon as the child is seated on the chair
lift, the magnetic fi eld at-taches the two parts together: the
back of the child and the seat. Once at the top the chair lift
detects the arrival and releases automatically. An electrical
system shuts off the magnetic fi eld and the child can get up and
off the chair lift.
Both pAssIvE ANd ACtIvE sAFEty.Parents are the fi rst to
appreciate this incomparable safety. Ski instructors are also
concerned as it is impossible for them to accompany all the
children on the lifts. Despite all the advice before getting on a
ski lift it is more reassuring to know that nothing can happen to
our little treasures. For example when you watch groups of kids
serenely on the ski lifts in Courchevel, the reason is clear why
such a fabulous invention is necessary. Rossignol collaborated with
Sommital, the company who conceptualised this product. Rapidly the
Magnestick concept was taken even further. The magnetic plate had

into flexible back protection, comfortable to enable freedom of
movement for a young skier. The weight is equivalent to ordinary
back protection enabling safety without measure, both active and
passive! The safety concept on the slopes has taken a step further
by adopting high visibility fabric for the waistcoat de-sign. So,
the child is safe from falling from a chair lift, their back is
protected from shocks and the child is visible from any distance on
the slopes therefore avoiding collisions. Of course the Magnestick
con-forms to all safety regulations and received an ISPO Award two
years ago. A deserving recognition for an invention that is 100%
effective. Several resorts have already equipped certain chair
lifts with the system: Courchevel, la Tania, Mribel-Mottaret, Mgve,
Peyragudes, Gourette, Val Frjus, Arcalis (Andorre) The idea has
even made it across the Atlantic to the American ski resort
Alapaine Meadows who can boast about having two of their chair
lifts kitted out.
