Roots Part 3: Better Roots Jeremy LeVan Proverbs 12:3 3 A man is not established by wickedness, But the root of the righteous cannot be moved. Proverbs 12:12 12 The wicked covet the catch of evil men, But the root of the righteous yields fruit. Colossians 2:6-7 As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith. Romans 11:16 16 For if the firstfruit is holy, the lump is also holy; and if the root is holy, so are the branches. Better Roots Must Be 1. Planted 2 Kings 19:30 30 And the remnant who have escaped of the house of Judah Shall again take root downward, And bear fruit upward. Its not enough to just spread seeds on top of the ground once a week. Psalm 92: Those who are planted in the house of the L ORD Shall flourish in the courts of our God. 14 They shall still bear fruit in old age; They shall be fresh and flourishing Better Roots Must Be 2. Watered Jeremiah 17:7 7 Blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD, And whose hope is the LORD. Jeremiah 17:8 8 For he shall be like a tree planted by the waters, Which spreads out its roots by the river, And will not fear when heat comes; But its leaf will be green, And will not be anxious in the year of drought, Nor will cease from yielding fruit. Psalm 1:1 Blessed is the man Who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, Nor stands in the path of sinners, Nor sits in the seat of the scornful; Psalm 1:2-3 2 But his delight is in the law of the LORD, And in His law he meditates day and night. 3 He shall be like a tree Planted by the rivers of water, That brings forth its fruit in its season, Whose leaf also shall not wither; And whatever he does shall prosper. Revelation 12:15 15 So the serpent spewed water out of his mouth like a flood after the woman, that he might cause her to be carried away by the flood. Better Root Must Be: 3. Fertilized Luke 13:6 6 He also spoke this parable: A certain man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard, and he came seeking fruit on it and found none. Luke 13:7 7 Then he said to the keeper of his vineyard, Look, for three years I have come seeking fruit on this fig tree and find none. Cut it down; why does it use up the ground? Luke 13:6-9 8 But he answered and said to him, Sir, let it alone this year also, until I dig around it and fertilize it. 9 And if it bears fruit, well. But if not, after that you can cut it down. 2 Kings 19:30 30 And the remnant who have escaped of the house of Judah Shall again take root downward, And bear fruit upward. 2 Kings In the fourteenth year of King Hezekiah, Sennacherib king of Assyria attacked all the outlying fortress cities of Judah and captured them. King Hezekiah sent a message to the king of Assyria at his headquarters in Lachish: Ive done wrong; I admit it. Pull back your army; Ill pay whatever tribute you set. 2 Kings The king of Assyria demanded tribute from Hezekiah king of Judah eleven tons of silver and a ton of gold. 2 Kings Hezekiah turned over all the silver he could find in The Temple of GOD and in the palace treasuries. Hezekiah even took down the doors of The Temple of GOD and the doorposts that he had overlaid with gold and gave them to the king of Assyria. 2 Kings The third officer, the Rabshakeh, was spokesman. He said, Tell Hezekiah: A message from The Great King, the king of Assyria: 2 Kings 18 Youre living in a world of make-believe, of pious fantasy. Do you think that mere words are any substitute for military strategy and troops? 2 Kings 18 Now that youve revolted against me, who can you expect to help you? You thought Egypt would, but Egypts nothing but a paper tigerone puff of wind and she collapses; Pharaoh king of Egypt is nothing but bluff and bluster. 2 Kings 18 Or are you going to tell me, We rely on GOD? But Hezekiah has just eliminated most of the peoples access to God by getting rid of all the local God- shrines, ordering everyone in Judah and Jerusalem, You must worship at the Jerusalem altar only. 2 Kings So be reasonable. Make a deal with my master, the king of Assyria. Ill give you two thousand horses if you think you can provide riders for them. You cant do it? Well, then, how do you think youre going to turn back even one raw buck private from my masters troops? 2 Kings 18 How long are you going to hold on to that figment of your imagination, these hoped-for Egyptian chariots and horses? 2 Kings Do you think Ive come up here to destroy this country without the express approval of GOD? The fact is that GOD expressly ordered me, Attack and destroy this country! 2 Kings Isaiah answered them, Tell your master, GODs word: Dont be at all concerned about what youve heard from the king of Assyrias bootlicking errand boysthese outrageous blasphemies. Heres what Im going to do: 2 Kings 19 Afflict him with self-doubt. Hes going to hear a rumor and, frightened for his life, retreat to his own country. Once there, Ill see to it that he gets killed. 2 Kings It wasnt long before Isaiah son of Amoz sent word to Hezekiah: 2 Kings 19 GODs word: Youve prayed to me regarding Sennacherib king of Assyria; Ive heard your prayer. This is my response to him: The Virgin Daughter of Zion holds you in utter contempt; Daughter Jerusalem thinks youre nothing but scum. 2 Kings Who do you think it is youve insulted? Who do you think youve been bad- mouthing? Before whom do you suppose youve been strutting? The Holy One of Israel, thats who! 2 Kings Did it never occur to you that Im behind all this? 2 Kings 19 Long, long ago I drew up the plans, and now Ive gone into action, Using you as a doomsday weapon, reducing proud cities to piles of rubble, 2 Kings Leaving their people dispirited, slumped shoulders, limp souls. Useless as weeds, fragile as grass, insubstantial as wind-blown chaff. 2 Kings I know when you sit down, when you come and when you go; And, yes, Ive marked every one of your temper tantrums against me. 2 Kings Its because of your temper, your blasphemous foul temper, That Im putting my hook in your nose and my bit in your mouth And turning you back to where you came from. 2 Kings To sum up, this is what GOD says regarding the king of Assyria: He wont enter this city, nor shoot so much as a single arrow there; Wont brandish a shield, wont even begin to set siege; 2 Kings Hell go home by the same road he came; he wont enter this city. GODs word! 34 Ill shield this city, Ill save this city, for my sake and for Davids sake. 2 Kings And it so happened that that very night an angel of GOD came and massacred 185,000 Assyrians. 2 Kings 19 When the people of Jerusalem got up next morning, there it wasa whole camp of corpses! 2 Kings Sennacherib king of Assyria got out of there fast, headed straight home for Nineveh, and stayed put. 2 Kings 19 One day when he was worshiping in the temple of his god Nisroch, his sons Adrammelech and Sharezer murdered him and then escaped to the land of Ararat. His son Esarhaddon became the next king. Next Steps: (Connection Card) Next Steps 1. What is God saying to you this morning through this message?
