This an index of the Rootes Group Engineering Standards books in the Archive covering the periodfrom 1943-1959 and 1959-1968. The later series consists of a set of annotated drawings in ring binderscovering all common items bought in. Many of the drawings have the names of the suppliers andoriginal references. The books have survived from the late 1960s at which time the ealier series hadbeen super-ceded. The earlier lists are therefore fragmentary. Some of the later drawings carry theChrysler name.
Matt spent 30/11/2015 re-arranging the digitisation area of the Archive Centre to make room for tworecent donations an A2 printer and an A3 scanner. The printer has already been put to use producingsome of the posters for our building fund, and now the A3 scanner is earning its keep digitising theengineering standards manuals. The engineering standards contain the details of all the small partson the vehicles like nuts, bolts, trim clips, washers, grommets, dzus fasteners. If you check your partslist it’s the parts with numbers from (7)9000000.
The first manual to be digitised starts at 9116110 and ends at 9169329 that’s a potential 53,000 parts.I checked the series Alpine parts list and this covers about 250 Alpine and probably Tiger parts.
There were several purposes for these books. Firstly designers could see what was available fromexternal suppliers, thereby avoiding items having to be specially made and so keeping the cost down.Secondly, the drawings were annotated with the materials strength, finish and tests to be carried outso that, when tendering for order suppliers, could comply with the Group wide requirements.
2 Book 0
This book references the old Standards Lists before the “million” number series was introduced c.1959.
The mysterious prefixes for the older part nos. are partially explained as follows. In Book 5 they aretranslated into the later number series.
B – bolts CB – coach boltsD – DS – drive screwsGCI – grey cast iron H seriesJP – K seriesM – SEMS units N – nutsP – pins and plugs P seriesR – rivets S – studSC or SCR – screws SPN – spannersSQ – T –TS – screws W – washersWS – wood screws
P, H, K series continued to be used for numbers higher than 1000 and may now be included in theMicrofiche collection.

3 Finish Specifications – List 40A
This is List 40A, re-issued in 27/9/1965. Initially the pages were not numbered, but have had pencilnumbers added to them which are the ones used below.
Its introduction notes that ... this manual is made up of standards lists covering two categories ofitems:
1. coventional standard parts of the type dealt with by National Standards, and
2. parts in common use... They are included in the standards manual as a guide.
The Group Part Numbers of all standard parts are within the 9 million series... with the exceptionof certain parts for which the second number will always be 9, e.g. 29— Each of the standards listscarries an identifying number comprising the first four digits of the Group Part Number... to the ListNumber is added in brakets the Sheet Number, thus 9068(1).

This book illustrates sections through various materials available as extrusions or in the form of sheet, seals, etc. The section drawing numbers relate quite closely to the Group numbers (part numbers),but it is not an exact match. The first sheets of the book contain the cross reference tables. Bothnumbers are listed on other sheets and below.
Many of the sheets have two sets of drawings and tables, so we have listed them in pairs where possible. There are no dates on these drawings but the style suggests they were from the 1959-68 series. Theywere probably drawn by apprentices as there are a large number of corrections.
Some highlights of this book include:
door seal etc: Bright Manufacturing Co. Ltd. (UA part codes)
conversion tables: old lists to new “million” series and vice versa c. Jan’1959
Not sure where the following drawings belong, probably at the start of Book 1.
