Recap pp. 120-144• Dad goes on a violent, drunken rampage and threatens Mom with a butcher
knife.• Mom decided it was time for another move/adventure, this time with West
Virginia being the destination. She thought Dad’s parents might help get him under control.
• A month later, they arrived in Welch, WV and stayed with Erma (Grandma), Grandpa, and Uncle Stanley in their run-down house.
• Because Welch appears so poverty stricken, Mom cheerfully announces that she will probably be the only artist in town and her career could take off there!
• Mom enrolled them in school and the teachers and kids were mean because they thought Jeannette was uppity. The kids were bullied mercilessly.
• Jeannette “saves” a boy from a vicious dog and one of the mean girls saw it happen.
• Jeannette becomes friends with this girl, who happens to be black. This causes Erma and Uncle Stanley to turn on Jeannette and Jeannette tells them not to use the N word.
• Mom and Dad don’t defend Jeannette and tell her to just get along with the bigoted relatives, which confuses Jeannette. Mom says Jeannette must look for a “redeeming” quality in Erma.
13. If parents aren’t getting along, is it better for them to live separately? [pg. 125]
14. Is there a point when it is time for one to give up one’s dream? If so, what is that point? [pg. 133-135]

16. Everyone on Little Hobart Street in Welch is poor, and “everyone grudgingly accepted some form of public aid.” The Walls, however, refused any kind of help, although they were the poorest family on the street. Is it more important to have pride or have food? [pg.159]
17. Do you think that difficult family circumstances bring siblings closer together or push them apart? [pg. 167]
18. Jeannette Walls has said in interviews that because she had so little as a child, she really appreciated things when she finally got them. Do you think that parents should give their kids less so they appreciate things more? What about high school? Would you appreciate it more if you had to pay for it? [pg. 177]
19. Mom says that welfare “would cause irreparable psychological damage” to the kids. “Once you go on welfare, it changes you. Even if you get off welfare, you never escape the stigma that you were a charity case. You’re scarred for life.” Does it scar people for life if they rely on welfare or charity? [pg. 188]
20. If kids are content with the way they are living, but Family Services (DHS) doesn’t like it, who is right? The kid/s or Family Services? [pg. 194]
21. Jeannette Walls has said, “Some people think my parents are absolute monsters and should’ve had their children taken away from them. Some think they were these great free-spirited creatures who had a lot of wisdom that a lot of parents today don’t [have].” What do you think? Should the kids have been taken away? If so, what should have happened to the kids? If not, what benefits did the kids have by staying with the parents? [pg. 213]
22. How much do you think the Walls children helped each other survive their circumstances? [pg. 230]
