Note: I do not work strictly to a specific brand of thread just
use a color that is most suitable to fit in with the others hence
you will not find brand names and codes rather a description. Also
note that machine stop colors are just there to make the machine
stop for you to perform certain tasks and are of no specific color.
You can thread any color you like. --------- Comb / Beak / Flap

Sand 9. Tan Method: Parts 1 to 4 are all started the same way: Part
1: Tightly hoop a piece of lightweight fabric such as poly cotton
or cheesecloth. Loosely place a piece of low loft (thin) batting
into your hoop, hold in place while 1st color stitches. Remove hoop
and trim away excess batting along the outer edge. Replace hoop
place another piece of lightweight fabric over the batting and
stitch 2nd color.
-
Part 1 is appliqu only: Stitch next color the placement line for
your 1st piece of fabric. Place fabric and hold in place while
machine stitches it down. Remove hoop from machine and trim off
excess fabric always leave a seam allowance of about 1 cm / 0.4
inch to all outer edges and a smaller one of about 0.5 cm / 0.2
inches along inner edges. But you need to trim very close to the
fabric along a narrow satin border.
This applies to the 2nd and 3rd fabric piece:
-
Next is the eye and the inner stitching followed by some
decorative stitching.
Part 2: This is appliqu for the 1st piece of fabric and piecing
ITH for the next 2 fabric strips. Start as done with part 1. Stitch
placement line for 1st piece of fabric. Place it, stitch in place
and trim off excess:
From contrast color cut a piece of fabric 18 x 6 cm / 7.2 x 2.4
inch. Stitch next color which is the placement line for this piece
place right side down leave a small seam allowance along 1 long raw
edge and on both sides stitch in place with next color, fold over
and finger press.
-
Cut another piece of contrast color fabric 14 x 8 cm / 5.6 x 3.2
inch and place/stitch down/fold over/finger press as done with the
one before. Secure with next color.
Next is the appliqud wing followed by a row of decorative
stitching.
-
Part 3 is very easy: Start of as done before and stitch 1st
color. Place batting over that, hold in place and stitch 2nd color.
Trim away excess batting, place your fabric (contrast color?) over
that, stitch last color.
Part 4: Just done as Part 2 only here you have 2 wings to do.
For the 2nd and 3rd contrast color cut 1 piece 10 x 9 cm / 4 x 3.6
inch and for the last one 16 x 9 cm / 6.4 x 3.6 inch. I took
pictures as I worked:
-
Part 5 (tail feathers) all done in applique Tightly hoop a piece
of WSS water soluble stabilizer such as Vilene and place the same
fabric you will use for the backing of the project right side down
into your hoop followed by a piece of heavy duty tear away
stabilizer hold both in place and stitch 1st color.
Next is the placement line for your 1st piece of fabric place it
and tack down with next color trim excess away place 2nd and 3rd
fabric pieces.
-
Stitch stippling detail. Remove hoop from machine and carefully
tear away heavy-duty stabilizer and trim off all fabrics around the
outline incl. the one underneath the HD stabilizer. Return hoop to
machine and stitch last color. Roughly trim away WSS and dip into
warm water very briefly you will need the stiffness here. Dry
flat.
Comb/Beak/Flap: Tightly hoop another piece of WSS Comb and Flap
are first. Stitch 1st color cut 2 pieces of fabric you will use for
the comb and one piece of the same size out of HD tear away
stabilizer. Place first fabric piece right side down, stabilizer
over that and the 2nd piece of fabric over the stabilizer right
side up. Place over the stitched 1st color, hold in place and
stitch 2nd color. Stitch Stippling. Remove HD stabilizer and trim
off excess fabric from top and bottom. Stitch next color. Repeat
with flap and beak. Also just quickly dip into hot water and dry
flat.
-
All parts are now ready for assembly:
From now on you will see different colors fabric please dont
worry about that . Accurately pin and sew the 4 main sections
together trim off inner seam allowances to avoid bulk.
-
If you want you can off course do the front as done now again
for the back. But I just did a plain, quilted backing. For that cut
the backing fabric somewhat bigger than the assembled 4 main
pieces, a piece of low loft batting and a piece of lightweight
fabric of that same size. Sandwich batting in between (a little 505
spray helps) and machine quilt.
Position beak and flap as shown secure with pins. Position comb
as you would like it to be final and mark on both ends. Put comb
aside.
-
Pin assembled front part right side down onto right side of the
quilted back piece. Remember that beak and flap are sandwiched in
between. Sew together by machine carefully follow the contours left
by the embroidery. Leave the bottom area open as well as the area
between the 2 points you marked earlier in the comb area. Trim off
excess fabrics neaten edges. Leave the 1 cm / 0.4 seam allowance
intact at Bottom and between marked points in the comb area.
Position comb and hand stitch in place repeat for the back.
From the bottom template cut a piece of cardboard and somewhat
bigger a piece of fabric. Glue fabric to cardboard as shown.
-
Stuff project and fill a small plastic bag with sand. Position
that over the stuffing. Place bottom into opening and slip stitch
closed.
For attaching the tail feathers I have tried various ways
including hand sewing but came to the conclusion that fabric glue
works best. ( peg idea is from DH)
