ROMAN SQUARE in Brno

Site desrc ipt ion:

Roman square represents a set of premises which connects Josefska and Masarykova streets. It belongs to the places with the well-preserved historical character in the central part of Brno. Currently it is mostly used as a passageway. The look of the place is fundamen-tally aected by the surrounding facades of buildings. The most striking building is the former Franciscan Monastery Brno and St. Mary Magdalene with a clown in front of them. On the eastern side of the square there is a gallery house with a ''newly'' built Josenka store next to it. On the western side of the square is a small marketplace formed on the place of the original medieval houses.

Problems :

Violation of silent hours consequence of the relative remoteness of the place; no one really controls the area at night Desolate courtyard used only for parking, walking the dogs and as outdoor toiletsAbandoned monastery takes up almost the entire southern edge of the Roman square. This means, that no one lives or work inside, so the object is deteriorating - especially the facade of the object.,,Just passage’’ most visitors is only passing through an area , there's not many reasons to stop hereVacant sites no buildings means no residents, no stores, no parterre, no urban life.Lack of urban furniture

Strenghts :

Calm Roman Square is located away from all busy routes running the center, so it is a much quieter place than the surrounding streets and squares.Atmosphere unique character of the square inside the block is driven primarily by buildings of the former monastery, the passage of stone virgin, landscape of roof space and history of the area itself.Parterre at least part of the space is dened in terms of living parterreGreen existing green , mature trees

Water e lements – ver t ica l :

are designed in a perforated bronze plate. From the openings, water strands are running down the surface. Furniture for s i t t ing:

It is made of the same material as water elements, with a top layer made of wood.Water e lements - hor izontal :

Adjacent lanes to the surrounding streets are enriched with water channels. Their main purpose is to attract the atten-tion of pedestrians on Masarykova and Josefská streets, and they are a great attrac-tion for children in summer as well .

IDEA of solution:

The proposal maintains the existing distribution of space. The area is divided into two basic parts, both located outside the transit section of the square. Both sections are equipped with water features and street furniture to make space for relaxation and meet-ings. A several new buildings is proposed inside the solved area. First of them is a house, whic will replace existing gap to the courtyard in the northern part of the area. Feasible function of this new building is a combination of a nursery and retirement house. Second one new building is proposed next to the passage of the stone virgin. Third new building is located on a vacant site on the place of the former medieval houses.
