CANDLE INTENTIONS:
Church: Walter Krebs
Today’s readings,
alternately harsh and gentle, speak of priesthood. What qualities are needed by those who would lead others in God’s ways?
■ FIRST READING: The prophet Malachi, like all the prophets, minces no words in denouncing hypocrisy and betrayal among the people of Israel. God speaks to the priests; they themselves must listen, taking to heart the words of God. If they do not, their very blessings will become a curse. What is the great sin of these false priests? They “show partiality” in their decisions, forgetting that all are children of one Father, God (Malachi 2:9).
■ RESPONSORIAL PSALM 131 comes in striking contrast to the harsh words of the prophet. It is one of the gentlest psalms in the Psalter, a song of childlike trust in God.
■ SECOND READING: St. Paul was the model priest and pastor, as “gentle... as a nursing mother cares for her children” (1 Thessalonians 2:7). He did not lord it over the people, but instead he worked alongside them. He did all this out of love, and the people received the word not as Paul’s word, but truly as “the word of God” (1 Thessalonians 2:13). Paul offers a model of gentle, selfless service.
■ THE GOSPEL: The last two Sundays have shown us Jesus in conflict with the scribes and Pharisees. Today, Jesus speaks to the crowds about these religious authorities - and he urges caution. Do what they say, Jesus says, for they have legitimate authority, having “taken their seat on the chair of Moses” (Matthew 23:2). But they should not follow their example, for they do not truly live God’s law. In the second part of the reading, Jesus lays out a new model for leadership. He calls on his disciples not to get addicted to the external trappings of power, whether titles or places of honor. God is the one Father, and Christ is the one teacher of all. The task of disciples is to lead through humble service.
Reminder that during the month of October, we place special emphasis on the role of Mary and praying the Rosary. Throughout the month, we invite you to remember our community, young and old, in your prayers especially in praying the Rosary.

Support St. Thomas’ Annual Christmas Concert
Dear Parishioners and Friends:
For the last 17 years our church has been blessed to have an outstanding traditional concert. All have enjoyed the fine musical work of the Garden State Concert Band and their guest vocalists. We have set it for Saturday, December 10, 2011, 7PM with reception following. To achieve this objective we need to have a Souvenir Program Journal that will raise the necessary funds. Please see the form below and make your contribution check to St. Thomas the Apostle. Thank you, PAUL ALONGI

Nicene Creed
I believe in one God, the Father of all things visible and invisible. mighty, maker of heaven and earth, I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages.
God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.
