The Community Engagement and Education Program, conducted by the Department of the Legislative Assembly on behalf of the Parliament, aims to raise the awareness and understanding of the role of the Parliament amongst school students.

Parliament Role Plays are educational activities available to students in Years 5, 6 and 7. The topics covered are designed to assist in meeting the Australian Victorian Essential Learning Standards (AusVELS).

The Parliament Role Play is an exciting program that provides an opportunity for Year 5, 6 and 7 students to pass their own law by taking on the roles of different people in the Parliament, including the Premier, Leader of the Opposition, Speaker, Clerk and the Serjeant-at-Arms.

The presentation includes video footage and props including a replica Mace and gowns. Students sit in the Legislative Assembly chamber as they perform their role play. Alternatively, our Tour Guides will come to your school and conduct the role play in the classroom.

A choice of pre-prepared scripts is available, covering a range of topics designed to be accessible to Years 5, 6 and 7 students. The script replicates the passage of a bill through the Legislative Assembly.

Parliament Role Plays are conducted by experienced Legislative Assembly Tour Guides.

Parliament Role PlaysBookingsParliament Role Plays are available either at Parliament House or at your school. Bookings for a Parliament Role Play at Parliament House are offered at 9:30 am and 11am on non-sitting Wednesdays. The Role Play is approximately 90 minutes in duration and includes a guided tour of the building.

Legislative Assembly Tour Guides can also visit schools in metropolitan Melbourne to conduct a Parliament Role Play in the class room. Using props and equipment including banners, nameplates, and a replica Mace, the classroom is set up to replicate the Legislative Assembly chamber at Parliament House. Bookings are available at 10.00 am on non-sitting Tuesdays and Thursdays.

A group of up to 30 students can participate in a Parliament Role Play.

Parliament Role Plays are free. Bookings are essential.
