What is Watershed

A watershed is an area of land that collects and drains water from high points (hills) to low points (valleys). When rain falls in a watershed, the water travels over natural and manmade terrain features toward the lowest point. Any area that drains water to one location is a watershed.

Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA)

• WAPDA establish in 1958.The responsibility to construct Dams and barrages to store water for irrigation purpose.

• WAPDA play an important role in watershed management.

• The responsibility of WAPDA according to watershed to reduce the sedimentation flow into the Dams through different Watershed.

Indus River System Authority (IRSA)

• IRSA was established in 1992• The water comes from the Dams and Barrages

to main irrigation system is assessed and controlled by IRSA.

• IRSA also manages to resolve disputes among the provinces pertaining to their share of water.

• The primary function of IRSA is to monitor, regulate and distribute the available river water resources among the provinces.

Pakistan Council of Research in Water Resources (PCRWR)

• PCRWR was established in 1964• The PCRWR is mandated to conduct, organize, co-

ordinate and promote research in all fields of water resources engineering, planning and management, so as to optimally use the available land and water resources and to help achieve sustainability in the agricultural sector.

• Make Pakistan sufficient in water resources for supplying good quality drinking water for human, livestock, wildlife, and for irrigation of agriculture crops as well as for industrial use.

Water Quality Management

• Water Quality Testing and Advisory Services • Development of Low Cost Water Testing and

Water Treatment Technologies• Provision of Safe Drinking Water to the

Public.

The National Agricultural Research Centre (NARC)

• The National Agricultural Research Centre (NARC) established in 1984, is the largest research institution of Pakistan Agricultural Research Council (PARC).

• To conduct high level basic /applied research in crops, natural resources, livestock, and agricultural production.

• PARC utilized watershed for maxim crop yield to manage water from sprinkle and drip irrigation.

Global Change Impact Studies Centre (GCISC)

• (GCISC) was established in May 2002• The objectives of GCISC are to monitor the

current and the likely future global trends in areas such as climate, water, food, agriculture, environment, biodiversity, health and energy etc., and scientifically determine their impacts on Pakistan.

SOIL SURVEY OF PAKISTAN (SSP)

• Soil Survey of Pakistan was established in 1962 as Soil Survey Project of Pakistan under Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestock. It was regularized in July 1973 as Soil Survey of Pakistan an attached department of Ministry of Food and Agriculture.

• Another development scheme National Institute of Soil Survey and Land Evaluation launched in 1974, which was regularized.

Page 12: Role of different departments in watershed management

Objective SSP

• Soil survey, comprehensive inventory of the soil resources of the country and their proper utilization.

• To prepare Pakistan soil resource inventory through reconnaissance surveys and maintain an updated database concerning the national land resources.

• To evaluate the land resources for various kinds of agricultural and non-agricultural use/development.

• To carry out detailed/semi-detailed soil survey of project areas and evaluate the project land for specific types of utilization and development.

Pakistan Meteorological Department

(PMD)

• PMD is responsible for astmeateded and predicted prescription in the watershed area.

• The meteorological observation is also impotent in the watershed region. The annual rainfall data is helpful to study the watershed and the impact of rain fall is observed on sedimentation load on watershed.

• Flood forecasting division is astmeateded the flow in river and water Resources.

Geological Department

• This department dialed with geology of watershed and mitigation the geology hazards.

• To check Geological structure and topography of watershed.

Soil and Water Conservation Department

• To increase infiltration of soils.• To improve water  holding capacity.• Harvesting run off.• To Check soil erosion • To Develop water Reservoir

Page 17: Role of different departments in watershed management

Forest Department

• Watershed management and upland conservation provide a means to achieve sustainable land and water resource management.

• Ground water recharge research.• Mountain slope development by planting of forage tree

and grass species and by soil conservation techniques.• Water conservation techniques: Water conservation

techniques have been developed and tested in different localities for the establishment of plantations of forest tree species.

Provincial Agriculture Department

• Development & reclamation of culturable waste land.

• Development of hilly areas, through terracing.

• Development / improvement of water storage ponds, mini dams and fish ponds.

Page 19: Role of different departments in watershed management

Provincial Irrigational &Drainage Authorities (PIDA’S)

• PIDA’S posed such a large number of operational, maintenance, institutional, financial & management problem that reforms of system were considered indispensable.

Page 20: Role of different departments in watershed management

The factors responsible for such described by PIDA.

• Overall deterioration of system management. • General lacks of agency responsiveness.• Inequitable distribution of irrigation water. • Lower irrigation efficiency.• Environmental degradation .

NGO’S

Page 22: Role of different departments in watershed management

WWF-Pakistan

• WWF Pakistan take part to Aware the public with respect to watershed.

• Improving Sub-Watershed Management and Environmental Awareness in the Ayubia National Park

• Using Micro-Hyde's For Improved Sub-watershed Management in Swat.

International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development

• To develop, test, and pilot equitable PES methodologies for watershed services in the HKH region

• To develop and test, through assessments and research, suitable watershed management strategies that address adaptation to climate change

• To build capacities of watershed managers to help scale up good watershed management practices

• To support policy development in integrated use of watershed resources.
