"Quicker than the surf"

France 1994. The atmosphere at the "Tour deFrance" was exhilarating and working with theteams and mechanics was exciting too. OurRohloff SLT-99 chan has proven a successwith its reliability! So at last, a couple of quietdays on the Atlantic coast. Why not take theMoutain bike on the beach?! Crazy idea, yes!Riding exactly where the surf runs out! Afterjust 200m, total stand still! The rear wheel isstuck fast in the wet sand. Changing the gearsimpossible! Derailleur gears won’t work whenyou are stuck! The next wave came and bothrider and bike received the first salt-watershower. Chain and sprockets are grinding fullof fine sand. The next wave came - nownothing works. The waves were rolling in fasterthan we could change gears.Still, it must feel great to have the waves roll outunder the bottom-bracket. This idea didn't letgo of me.

From now on the lights were burning bright andlate into the night. The constructiondepartment in the Rohloff Company wasworking overtime. Successful gear changesand sprocket combinations were investigated.Mountainbike, downhill, touring and everydayriders were asked along with sportsphysicians: How many gears do you need andwhat has a gear hub got to be capable of inorder to achieve maximum riding fun? 1997:findally we had our answer and put it to the test!Guess where...

The rear wheel is stuck fast in the wet sand. The first wave is coming. Change the gearsdown while stuck. 1st gear, gentle on thepedals, riding further - 2nd - 3rd - 4th... Thesegears are quicker than the surf!

30km of beautiful sandy beach lay ahead of us.It is a great feeling to have the waves roll outunder the bottom bracket!

14 effective gears

SPEEDHUB 500/14

The right gear system plays a very important role in makingbike riding fun. The difference between the largest and thesmallest gears (range of gears) and the size of the increasesbetween them play a large part in deciding which ridingsituation the gear system has been taylored to (e.g. High speedracing, MTB, Downhill). The size of the increases between gears will determine howsmoothly the flow is from gear to gear. The shifting betweengears in all riding situations (also whilst stationary) must thenbe made as light and intuitive as possible in order to maximisethe riding fun. When the range of gears lies over 500% and the increasebetween these gears lies under 15% but remains evenlyspaced out, then the sports rider as well as the hobby rider hasthe ability to change gears at the precise moment when

needed, regardless of the current riding conditions and withoutchanging the comfortable crank rotation speed. This is onlypossible with the .

The diagram below shows a comparison between a 27-speedderailleur gear system and the .There is no difference between the range of gears and thenumber of effective gears. Next to this is the optimum, evenlyincreased speeds of theImpossible for the derailleur gear system is the shifting speedand the possibility of shifting through all gears with just oneshifter whilst stationary or whilst pedaling.Just like the derailleur system, the range of gears can betaylored to the riders individual wishes whether it be for a fasteror a slower riding style.

The possibilities of an alternative gear systemhad been thought over by Rohloff for a longtime. All aspects of the derailleur system (lowweight, high working efficiency, large range ofgears, etc.) were held against with the knowndisadvantages like high maintenance, lowlevel of dirt resistance, short wear time, etc.

Professional and hobby riders alike havelearned to trust the substantial properties: Highreliability, optimum gear increments, wideoverall gear range, carefree and easy use, quick shifting, low weight and a high workingefficiency. This combination is sure to leave norider´s wish unfullfilled.

Close to the technology of the car indrustry, thefully encapsulated gear mechanism runs withinan oil bath to guarantee a long life for the hubeven under extreme riding conditions.

The indexing of the gears is controlled withinthe gear-unit itself, and so this allows the

to run adjustment andmaintenance free for thousands of KM’s. Theeven gear increments of 13.6% ensure that therider can always ride at their optimumperformance level. The large overall range ofgears (526%) ensures that there is always thecorrect gear available for every type of ridingsituation. Pure cycling fun is guaranteed!

The rider will enjoy the extraordinary tech-nology for over thousands of kilometres. Onlythe

special transmission.

As the result of many years research anddevelopment, the high performance gearhubwith 14 speeds was at the end of 1996, finallyready for testing. After intensive investigationand thorough testing, the production started in1999. Since then, thousands of

Chainguide CCThe Chainguide CC Art.No. completely prevents the chain from springing off the chainring. When just riding normally with a chain tensioner in use, it is possible that the chain might momentarily loseits tension and springs off the chainring. The Chainguide CC is definitely necessary on all full-suspensionbikes and for off-road use.

Rohloff ( 8260)

Chain tensionerA chain tensioner is necessary if it is not possible to tension the chain by pulling back the wheel withinthe dropouts or by using an eccentric bottom bracket. The and modelsinclude the chain tensioner as part of the original package. The chain tensioner is alsoavailable separately when needed (Art.No. 8250).

Due to the especially high level of load in MTB sport (extremely high chainforce, gear-shifting under pressure, etc.) the chain causes the sprockets towear more quickly. To ensure a safe operation of the chain the wear of thesprockets must also be monitored. This is made easily possible with theuse of the sprocket wear indicator. This tool is onlysuitable to measure the wear of HG and IG sprockets .
