ROEBUCK PRIMARY SCHOOL OBSERVANCE OF NAIDOC

Our students and staff marched last Friday in the Reconciliation Walk in Chinatown with one of the highlights being our choir, joining voices with the other primary schools in Broome, to bring a tear to the eye of many with their rendition of ‘From Little Things Big Things Grow’.

Monday saw a tremendous assembly hosted by the Year 6 students in Spoonbill 3 and the official unveiling of the totem poles; 21 in total. Each pole each represents a class from Roebuck Primary School in 2017, with each cluster of poles representing a theme of: What Broome means to me; the birds of Roebuck Primary School; and, the Six Seasons. This story line connects each student and class and allows for a connected pathway throughout our school.

Leading up to and including this week classes have been completing fantastic activities that inform, acknowledge and observe elements of our traditional history and culture. In our classrooms and noticeboards there are samples of this work.

On Friday, our traditional NAIDOC football game between the Goolils (turtles) and Jalangardi(goannas) will be played with the Jalangardi hoping to extend their unbeaten winning streak to three consecutive games. Your attendance, support and cheering is most warmly welcome.

STAFFING

After several years of service to the students at Roebuck Primary School, Mrs Di Herbert is leaving us this Thursday to commence a new chapter living in the northern suburbs of Perth. Mrs Herbert has worked with many students and across many year levels and has contributed greatly to our school community. Mrs Sarah Fisher, one of our School Officers who has been with us since February 2015, is moving with her family to Karratha. Mrs Fisher has often been the point of contact for many new families; greeting all with her cheery smile in addition to tending to many students who have sought assistance from the office. I am sure Mrs Fisher will continue to enjoy the camping experiences in the Pilbara which will almost be as good as the Kimberley. ON behalf of all staff, students and families, past and present, we wish you and your families all the very best.

SCHOOL HOLIDAYS

With the dry season upon us, many are heading off to various distant holiday spots; others, more closer to home. Whatever your plans, may they be safe and enjoyable with much time spent with family and friends.

To ALL staff: You continue to provide the very best for the students at Roebuck Primary School. The amount of time, energy, passion, commitment and professional standards by which you uphold is exemplary and I wish each and every one of you a restful, relaxing and well-earned school break

FIVE MINUTES WITH MISS SONEE….

Most of us know Education Assistant extraordinaire Sonia Ragoonanan, as Miss Sonee!

I got to sit down with Miss Sonee to find out a bit more about her and what she gets up to when she’s not working with our gorgeous students at Roebuck Primary School.

Did you know that Miss Sonee worked at Roebuck Primary School a long time ago as our GARDENER! That’s right, before she worked with our students she used to make this place look amazing too!

Miss Sonee grew up in Tom Price but moved to Broome almost 30 years ago! That’s right, she has lived here for nearly 30 years! I always joke with Miss Sonee and tell her that she must have found this town and that she thinks it’s ‘her’ town because she has been here forever!

Miss Sonee was inspired to work with children because her husband was a high school teacher and the hours suited her. She also wanted to make a difference to student’s lives and is passionate about helping those students that need a little bit of extra help.

Miss Sonee enjoys working at our school because of all the ‘LAUGHS’ she gets to share with the students and staff. Miss Sonee has actually been banned from the Music room because of her gorgeous big booming laugh – it makes everyone around her laugh and we never get any work done! Just jokes

Miss Sonee’s greatest accomplishment is owning her own home in Broome. I can tell you that Miss Sonee has the MOST AMAZING garden which she spends hours in, making it look beautiful! Miss Sonee loves to garden and it is one of her biggest passions!

In the future Miss Sonee would like to buy her next home in Tabago. Tabago is in Trinidad and is an exotic island! Miss Sonee would like to move there, meet the man of her dreams and live happily ever after!

We hope your dreams all come true Miss Sonee, but we would miss you here at Roebuck Primary School!

P&C NEWS

A huge thank you to everyone that supported our recent movie night which raised $1,400 with the door prize being won by Victoria De Bruyn.

The evening kicked off with the exciting announcement of the first ever Roebuck Primary School Colour Run! The Colour Run with be held on Friday, 4 August and will be replacing the annual Lapathon. It will give students a chance to raise money for the school in a new, fun and exciting way, while also winning super cool prizes for themselves. More information will sent home during week 1 next term.

It’s great to see all the beautifully decorated totem poles finished and in place on the school grounds in time for all the NAIDOC week celebrations. The totem poles were proudly supported and funded by the P&C earlier this year.

Please join us at the next P&C meeting which will be held at 6.30pm on Tuesday, 1 August in the Staffroom – everyone is welcome!

NAIDOC WEEK

Today we went on a bus and we drove to Streeters Jetty. Then

we lined up. After that we started to walk along Male Oval and I

realised this walk was special because we are all united. We

went passed the Police Station and I felt good. I hope one day

we will be united.

What is NAIDOC?

National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee (NAIDOC) celebrations are held across Australia each July to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

NAIDOC Week is an Australian observance lasting from the first Sunday in July until the following Sunday. NAIDOC Week celebrates the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Symbols of NAIDOC

The Australian Aboriginal Flag was designed by artist Harold Thomas and first flown at Victoria Square in Adelaide, South Australia, on National Aborigines Day, 12 July 1971.

What is the meaning of the Torres Strait Islander flag? The thin black stripes between the green and blue panels signify the Torres Strait Islanders themselves. The white five-pointed star at the centre of the flag represents the five major island groups, and the white dhari (dancer's headdress) around it also symbolises the Torres Strait Islands people

Reconciliation walk: This march was a public expression of support for meaningful reconciliation between Australia’s Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples and occurred in the year 2000 across the Sydney Harbour Bridge and other locations throughout Australia and is repeated each year as an endearing symbol of this united commitment.

Today we went on the bus all the way to Streeters Jetty.

Then we walked to Male Oval, Hammersley Street and

Shire Offices. My partner was Jacinta. We walked,

walked, walked and walked. We walked because we

wanted everyone in Australia to be united. I felt happy,

excited and exhausted. My favourite part was when we

walked because we got exercise.

This term has seen the finalisation of the Early Childhood and Junior Primary

Play area upgrades. This has been an 18 month project initially commencing in

2016 with our community consultation process where parents, students and

staff all got to have a say in the changes that were planned for the outdoor

environments. Students are thriving in the newly developed stimulating natural

environments and we have been overwhelmed with the support from the

community. In particular the school wishes to thank the following business and
