Wiggins he had been drinking beer from a cooler he brought into the Ag Center on that day. He had not been to an auction since his son’s death, something the two of them always did together, he said. “I’ve been going through a lot of depres-sion,” Cundiff told the court. According to the cita-

tion, local law enforce-ment received com-plaints from citizens who witnessed Cundiff drinking beer at the auc-tion. Judge Wiggins told Cundiff he is facing very serious charges, and willfully violated the conditions of his release. The Commonwealth’s motion was sustained, and Cundiff’s bond was

revoked. He was taken to jail from the courtroom. Cundiff will serve 45 days in jail and be re-quired to post an addi-tional $50,000 cash bail in order to be released prior to his trial. The court also ordered that upon release, Cun-diff must remain at his residence at all times, unless traveling to court, seeking medical treat-

ment, or meeting with his attorney. Cundiff also must not be in vio-lation of the law, cannot consume illegal drugs or alcohol, and cannot pos-sess or be in the proxim-ity of any firearms, ac-cording to the order. Cundiff will face a jury at his trial on mur-der and domestic vio-lence charges, beginning on Sept. 28.

This spike accom-panies the new Delta variant which accounts for half of new nation-al cases according to the Center for Disease Control and Preven-tion. Director Rochelle Walensky, who heads the CDC, said fully vaccinated people are resistant to the Delta variant.

This hardly quells concerns locally, con-sidering the vaccina-tion rate in Muhlenberg County rests at 40.3%, well under the goal to achieve herd immunity. “We expect to see in-creased transmissions in these communities, unless we can vaccinate more people now,” says director Walensky.

plain a few things about the powers of the au-thority. He said it has two distinct roles un-available to other agen-cies. The first is the abil-ity to initiate revenue bonds and the second is to run a PILOT pro-gram, which is payment in lieu of taxes. Both of these are tactics used to recruit and retain indus-try, Clifton said. The board of the Muhlenberg Regional Industrial Authority will have eight members, ap-pointed by the county’s judge executive. Some concern was raised about giving too much authority to the judge executive to select these board members, but county attorney Ryan Rice said the statute un-der which this industrial authority is created stip-ulates the board shall be selected by the judge executive. Term limits will be addressed when the governing board cre-ates its bylaws. Some concerns were raised by the public and magistrates regarding this board’s ability to claim land under em-inent domain. Clifton explained any decisions regarding eminent do-main would have to be approved by the fiscal court. He also explained there are rigorous rules surrounding its use, making it highly unlike-ly to be done by the in-dustrial authority. The court approved a change to the use of the shelter in Paradise Park. The park is a popular

spot for parties and fam-ily picnics, and people could reserve the shel-ter for $25. However, people often got to the park to find something already happening in the shelter, creating an awkward situation. The court has decided to waive the $25 rental fee and make the use of the shelter on a first come, first served basis. Keenan Durall of the Graham Fire Depart-ment requested the court approve an ordinance allowing the fire depart-ment to use a third-par-ty company to collect funds from insurance companies due to the department. This would help recuperate money for calls made by the de-partment, but only from insurance companies, and not individuals. The court asked that county attorney Rice look over the ordinance, and also change it to in-clude all departments in the county, not just Gra-ham. The court approved the use of county prop-erty in Central City for a religious tent revival, to last approximately two weeks, beginning in the week of July 12. The church hosting the event is Harvest Vision Church. The next meeting of the Muhlenberg County Fiscal Court will be July 22 at 4 p.m. Meetings are held on the second floor of the Muhlenberg County Courthouse in Greenville and are open to the public.

be $20.78 based on water usage of 2,000 gallons or less each month. The ordinance details water and sewer rates both in-side and outside the city, up to 50,000 gallons per month. No action is tak-en upon the first reading of the ordinance. A resolution may be in sight to ongoing public outcry for the city to act on a dilapidated house on Oakview Drive. Neigh-bors to the home, located at 401 Oakview Drive, have voiced their con-cern to the council at sev-

eral recent meetings, but at the July meeting a new owner of the home came to update the council on progress he is making to repair the home. A recent transplant from Wisconsin has taken ownership of the home and detailed for the council his plans to renovate and live in the home. He has been working with the city’s fire chief and has cleaned up the yard with plans to continue improvements. City administrator Leslie Cornette said a

June 12 surplus auction, held in conjunction with the county and the school district at the Muhlen-berg County Agriculture and Convention Center, was very successful. The city received a total of a little more than $46,000 for the sale of surplus property at the auction, Cornette said. About half of the funds were for the Utilities Commission, she said. The council approved a request for $30,000 moved from a city in-vestment account to

Morgan Park, for park expenses. The funds will go toward replace-ment of lights around the pool’s perimeter and creation of a spray pad, work on a futsal court, and pool maintenance. The council approved a sponsorship request from United Way, in the amount of $300 and a contribution request from Pennyrile Area RC&D in the amount of $350. The next meeting of the Greenville City Council will be on Aug. 12 at 5 p.m.

The 4-H Teen Club is partnering with The Studio to host an inau-gural event to help feed hundreds of Muhlenberg County children, and offer local groups and artists a unique way to give. County 4-H coordi-nator Mackenzie Pogue and local potter at The Studio, April Jernigan, are bringing an interna-tional hunger project, called Empty Bowls, to the community in Octo-ber. They plan on making it an annual event. Empty Bowls was cre-ated in the early 1990s by an art teacher in Michi-gan, as a way for artists and students to make a difference in their com-munity. The concept has spread, and while each Empty Bowls event is independently created and organized, the result is the same – to create bowls as a fundraiser for food related charities

around the world. Participating artists are busy creating bowls for the local Empty Bowls event, which will be held on Oct. 16 to coincide with World Hunger Day. Jernigan, at The Studio in Central City, is holding workshops for individu-als and groups to paint, throw and hand build bowls for the event. The price to create bowls for the October event is $22 for two bowls, and at least one bowl must be donated to Empty Bowls. For bowls made and donat-ed through The Studio, Jernigan will donate an additional $2 to the proj-ect. Then on Oct. 16, a simple meal will be served at the Central City Convention Center and ticket holders can select a handmade bowl at the event. Jernigan said she’s already hosted several groups at The Studio to create bowls, including a few from local churches. “You can come to The

Studio and paint bowls. You can also do a little throwing session and donate those,” Jernigan said. She will also be offering hand-building classes to make bowls for the project. Artists, crafters and anyone who would like to try their hand at creat-

ing a bowl for the project can give it a try on July 19, between 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. at the UK Ex-tension Office, at 3690 State Route 1380. Partic-ipants can paint a ready-made ceramic bowl, or hand-build one from clay. Proceeds from the

event will help to pay for the 4-H Teen Club’s Backpack Program. The popular program sends a backpack full of kid-friendly food items home from school each week with hundreds of qualifying children in the county’s schools. With their usual fundraisers

getting canceled for the past year or more, Pogue is looking for new ways to raise the money need-ed to keep sending home food. “We didn’t have all the support that we’ve had over the years because of covid,” Pogue said. “So we didn’t raise the money needed to be able to 100% fund the whole year.” The backpack program is funded through the community, and Pogue said this year they hope to raise more than $43,000 to feed approximately 360 children throughout the school year. It costs about $3 per bag, and they are provided for 41 weeks, and $120 can sponsor one child for the entire year, Pogue said. For more information about Empty Bowls, the 4-H Teen Club’s Back-pack Program, and op-portunities to create bowls for the event, con-tact Mackenzie Pogue at the UK Extension Office at 270-338-3124.

Letters to the Editor

As a patriot, resident and taxpayer of Muhlen-berg county I’m in complete disgust that our coun-ty officials would agree to a such a partisan event at the Ag Center on the weekend of 9/11. I can only speak for myself, but know others happen to agree that this day should be reserved for bipartisan celebrations of the unity of all patri-ots, bringing citizens together and not dividing us along political party lines. It should also be recommended that a rule be made that protects our county and its officials from future scheduling of anything of this nature with-out anyone’s acknowledgement. From what I un-derstand, not one county official was approached about this and found out through a Facebook Live video. Shameful!! I would also like to thank Malcom West for his vote against it, stating his concerns (as a former first responder) about the preparation that usually goes into an event of this size. Thank you, from a truly embarrassed and upset taxpayer and fellow patriot.

When we close the door on the COVID-19 pandemic, unemploy-ment insurance will re-flect one of the greatest governmental failures in generations. Almost over-night, Kentuckians found themselves depending on state government, many for the first time in their lives. The system in place at the beginning of the pandemic was designed to meet the needs of a growing economy with record-low unemploy-ment, not the staggering shutdown with hundreds of thousands out of work. Unfortunately, the system was not temporarily ad-justed to keep up with the massive economic shut-down and the expansion of eligibility. While various reasons are given for why the sys-tem was unable to handle the increase in claims, many of the offices were closed over the past four years because of record low unemployment, with

a rate that dipped down as far as 4.8 percent, and there were more effective ways to spend taxpayer money. The offices that remained opened were strategically placed at or near community and technical colleges or vo-tech centers to encour-age those unemployed to seek an education or skill training to get a job. While some of the of-fices were closed, the state employees who worked in those facilities were not fired; many still work for the state today. My question has always been, why not call them back, since they have the skill set, and create some mobile units to travel the state? Very little of that has actually taken place. Instead, Kentucky spent $14.5 million with an out-of-state compa-ny, Ernst & Young. After missing multiple dead-lines to “catch up” on claims, the number of unprocessed claims has more than doubled to approximately 122,000. While more than two million claims have been

processed, many Ken-tuckians still have not re-ceived the money prom-ised to them. Even now, almost a year and a half after the shutdown began, I re-ceive messages, emails, and phone calls from constituents asking for help with their unpro-cessed unemployment in-surance claims. My office continues to provide my constituents with as much assistance as we can and I am regularly texting, emailing, or calling the contact we were given in the Labor Cabinet. While she has been responsive and as helpful as she can be, many people contact me multiple times out of frustration at the lack of progress. The legislature does not have the authority to oversee the day-to-day administration of the un-employment insurance office; that is an Exec-utive Branch function. However, we can enact laws. During the 2021 Regular Session, we ex-ercised our authority to make the unemployment

FRANKFORT—Rep. Matt Lockett, R-Nicho-lasville, said he believes his bill, Bill Request 69 “will be one of the most vital pieces of legisla-tion” that will be consid-ered when the General Assembly convenes for its 2022 session. According to Lockett, who is the bill’s primary sponsor, the goal of BR 69 is to ban the teaching and promoting of critical race theory in Kentucky’s public schools. The pre-filed bill was the main topic of discussion during today’s Interim Joint Committee on Education meeting. Lockett said critical race theory (CRT) teach-es that the political and social system in the US is based on race and labels those who are white as the oppressors and those

who are Black as the op-pressed. Lockett along with one of the bill’s co-sponsors Rep. Jennifer Decker, R-Waddy, said they have both heard from parents and educators across the Commonwealth who say CRT is being taught in schools and that they are against it being part of the school curriculum. Kentucky Department of Education Commis-sioner Dr. Jason Glass testified that curricu-lar decisions are left to school based decision making councils. “The Kentucky De-partment of Education is not aware of any districts or teachers specifically teaching critical race the-ory and neither CRT nor terms associated with it appear in our state stan-dards,” Glass said.

Although he is not an expert on critical race theory, Glass did offer a definition of CRT and suggested the committee invite an expert to testify. “Critical race theory is a decades old legal and academic theory which seeks to explain why rac-ism continues to exist,” Glass said, adding that CRT is typically taught and discussed in gradu-ate-level courses and is not a developmentally appropriate concept for elementary and middle school-aged students. Glass said the bill hurts freedom of speech and that these types of laws hurts education and hin-ders the state’s ability to recruit and retain teach-ers. Lisa Wilner, D-Louis-ville, also criticized the bill’s language.

“When I read Bill Request 69, I found it vague,” Wilner said. “…The goal seems to be to want to ban discomfort, but you know, unfortu-nately, that’s not really something we can legis-late.” Lockett responded by explaining the goal of the bill isn’t to just eliminate the term critical race the-ory, but to make sure stu-dents are not taught they are less than somebody else due to the color of their skin. Lawmakers hinted this will not be the last time BR 69 or any other crit-ical race theory related legislation will be dis-cussed during the interim. Any official action law-makers choose to take on BR 69 cannot begin until the legislative session be-gins in January 2022.

Claims decline in states opting out of weekly unemployment bonus

program more effective and efficient to serve both employers and employ-ees. We provided addi-tional funding for tech-nology upgrades, required additional staff be added from other agencies, and provided relief to employ-ers who faced increased premiums. We also cre-ated a task force to study future changes to the pro-gram to avoid a disaster like this from happening again. As life returns to nor-mal, Kentucky businesses are facing a different real-ity. There are more than 100,000 available jobs across our state. Business-es have been forced to re-duce their operating hours or shutdown their dine-in

or drive-through options because they cannot find people to work. We can all agree that our current labor short-age must be addressed to grow our economy and make a successful come-back. I, alongside my col-leagues, have urged the Governor to terminate the federal unemployment subsidy for unemployed Kentuckians. These ben-efits, which were orig-inally intended to keep Kentuckians afloat during the pandemic, are now enabling a massive labor shortage that continues to harm our already strug-gling businesses. Throughout the Unit-ed States, unemployment claims have declined by 35 percent in states opt-ing out of the addition-al federal $300 weekly unemployment subsidy. Of the states that contin-ue to pay people more money to stay home than return to work, there has been nearly a 19 percent increase in initial claims. There are jobs available, and it is time to get back to work.

Like many of you, I was shocked by the $1,500 per person return-to-work incentive. This incentive is offensive to those who have worked throughout the pandemic, including countless frontline work-ers. While a one-time re-turn-to-work bonus may attract some to return to work, without ending the additional federal benefit, it does not go far enough to correct the current la-bor crisis. After all, you are still paying many more than twice as much to stay home. Where is personal re-sponsibility? Why not end the additional $300/week and put the $1,500 towards getting those who haven’t received their unemployment paid, give a bonus to those who haven’t missed a day of work, or maybe give a supplement to the elderly on a fixed income?

Day should be for bipartisan celebrations

Psalms 16 Preserve me, O God: for in thee do I put my trust. 2 O my soul, thou hast said unto the Lord, Thou art my Lord: my goodness extendeth not to thee; 3 But to the saints that are in the earth, and to the excellent, in whom is all my delight. 4 Their sorrows shall be multiplied that hasten after another god: their drink offerings of blood will I not offer, nor take up their names into my lips. 5 The Lord is the portion of mine inheritance and of my cup: thou maintainest my lot. 6 The lines are fallen unto me in pleasant places; yea, I have a goodly heritage. 7 I will bless the Lord, who hath given me counsel: my reins also instruct me in the night seasons. 8 I have set the Lord always before me: because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved. 9 Therefore my heart is glad, and my glory rejoiceth: my flesh also shall rest in hope. 10 For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell; neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption. 11 Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy

presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore. MADISONVILLE – Toyota Motor Manufac-turing of Kentucky has donated four cars to the automotive technology program at Madisonville Community College. Types of vehicles do-nated include Camry, Avalon, and Lexus and range from 2017-2020 models, including hybrid models. These vehicles provide MCC students the opportunity to learn the latest technology in the automotive world. MCC would not have been able to purchase vehicles as frequently as needed to keep up with technology, so Toyota’s donations ensure MCC students are at the fore-front in the automotive field. “This donation from Toyota provides a great opportunity for our stu-dents to gain hands-on experience with the latest automotive technology,” said Adam O’Rear, MCC automotive technology instructor. “These newer mod-el vehicles broaden the scope of what students

can troubleshoot in the lab, better preparing them for their career in the auto industry,” he said. The automotive tech-nology program provides students with knowledge in troubleshooting, per-forming preventative maintenance, servic-ing and repairing auto-mobiles. The program prepares graduates for entry-level service tech-nician jobs in the auto repair industry. “We believe it’s our responsibility to partner with educators to sup-port career readiness pro-grams that help develop our future workforce,” said Kim Ogle, Toyota Kentucky corporate com-munications manager. “Our goal is help prepare students for future work-force success and expose them to an industry that is a vital component of Kentucky’s economy.” For more information on MCC’s automotive technology program, contact Matt Luckett at (270) 824-1757 or email: [email protected].
