The second one was definitely the 80's, a
period that marked the world in so many
ways, today we refer to it simply as "the
legendary 80's".
Without detriment to the first, the early 80's
were a period of overflowing creativity,
boundless youthful expression, reflected in its

underdeveloped
technology.
On those days you couldn´t download the hit

you just had to pay for it. So, at the beginning
the record companies had more money

Since the end of the 90's,
the music industry has
been strongly punished by
illegal online downloading,
that means less sales and
less money for companies
to invest in artists and
music, which also means no
time to flourish as an artist.
As a new artist you have to
be successful since the very
beginning.
Nowadays, the music is too available and it
makes that those songs burn so quickly. In
the past, if you didn't buy the song, you just
had to wait until it was
played on the radio or TV. I
think this wait brought
magic and got to keep it in
people's mind for a long
time.
In my opinion, the best
proof of the level reached
by the rock in the 80's and
90's was that it managed to
establish as the universal
rhythm and it was sung in
every language around The
globe.

Rock Music in
80`s and 90`s
Pure inspirations,
Feeling and Talent
Rock music is a musical genre from 20th
century that was developed during and after
1960´s, especially in the United Kingdom and
United States. It has its roots in the 40´s and
50´s Rock and Roll music, whose influence is
done by rhythm like blues and country
music. Rock music also was influenced on a
number of other genres such a blues and folk
as well as it incorporated influences from
jazz, classical music and other musical
sources. Usually, Rock music is interpreted,
among many other instruments that
normally are added, with electric and
acoustic guitars, drums, bass, and voices and
sometimes keyboard instruments such as
organs or synthesizers.
Particularly, 80´s and 90´s was an amazing
time for the growth of Rock Music, given that
there were a lot of great bands and singers
like: Queen, Aerosmith, Pink Floyd, Iron
Maiden, Black Sabbath, White Snake, Dire
Straits, Metallica, Guns and Roses, Eric
Clapton, Carlos Santana, Kraken, among
many others. Specifically, according to a
survey about the 100 best songs of the 80´s
made by the specialized music channel Vh1,
the top five were the next songs: 5th for
Madonna with “like a virgin”, 4th for George
Michael with “careless whisper”, third place
for Guns and Roses with “November Rain”,
second place for Dire Straits with “Sultans of
Swings” and the winner was Queen with
“Bohemian Rhapsody”. According to these
results, it showed the predominance of rock
music in that time. Consequently, all
marketing and advertising was stronger for
rock music than for another kind of music in
those decades.
In the same way, the music business has
been a great opportunity for music
producers, as well as for specialized channels
like MTV, that created in 1984 the MTV
Video Music Awards. Besides, famous
concerts performed like Live at Wembley,
Live Aid or Rock in Rio, collected millions of
dollars. Especially, The Freddie Mercury
Tribute Concert for AIDS Awareness was an
open-air concert held on Easter Monday,
April 20th, 1992 at London's Wembley
Stadium, for an audience of 72,000 people.
The concert was broadcasted live on
television and radio to 76 countries around
the world, with an audience of up to one
billion. The profits from the concert were
used to launch The Mercury Phoenix Trust
AIDS charity organization.
In conclusion, Rock music of 80´s and 90´s
left a real legend on people around the world
and most of them, according to comments
on social networks, and including me, feel
that music of these years was much more
interesting, ingenious and emotional than
music nowadays. Finally, I have to add why
we haven´t forgotten that time? Maybe
tomorrow we could find a better way to
continue doing real music like classic rock
music!

The rock
growth in the
80´s and 90´s
Generally, the rock is the sound with
more power among all types of music that
was born in United States on the XX Century,
but everyone is asking, ¿where was the rock
born?, which means this sound?. The root of
the rock began with the blues, with just a
guitar, a bass and drums, instruments that
made the most amazing sound for the
rebellious youth of all the times Now, let's
see the most important moments of rock in
80's and 90's.
The Rock in the 80´s has its roots in
the age of rock and roll in the 50´s, at the
pass of the years, the rock has several
fusions such as folk, blues, jazz, hard and
progress rock, and it has created many
subgenres such as New wave, New romantic,
synthetic and alternative rock. Also the rock
has had a crisis since a stupid fanatic killed
the singer John Lennon, of the band the
Beatles; the most awful event in the music
history and in the world. Furthermore, other
incredible event was on the TV, 24 hours of
music and The Radiophonic died suddenly.
In the 80´s, the top 5 were: Marillo,
Michael Jackson, Bon Jovi, Poisson, Red hot
chili Peppers (Source: Wikipedia). Now in the
90´s, a technique change, NO MORE
cassette, the compact disc was wonderful,
that had 74 minutes of music without stops.
The other thing that changed was the
parties. The teenagers did not go to clubs
and bars now they go to garages, malls, and
streets alone where a DJ is playing.
In that decade, subgenres like Black
metal, grunge, funk and rap were born and
these are the generations that will be forever
in our hearts. This is the top 5 in the 90´s:
Nirvana, Placebo, Ramstein, Metallica, and
the Chemical Brothers. (Source: Wikipedia).
The fans of rock were in the 80's and 90's
and this time leave us incredible songs and
that with just a guitar, bass and drums was
possible this rumbling sound, which never
change and it is and will be the genre that
moves the masses worldwide.
This sound like no other feeling
makes you live without equal, you can cry,
laugh or just say no more. What makes an
Impression genre. In conclusion as well as
English is the universal language, the rock
musical genre is the universal of all times.

ROCK MORE THAN SOUNDS
Music is the combining art of sounds through human voices or instruments. Music is a very
important expression that humans have created to show his feelings throughout the history. Rock,
for example, represents different ways of thinking; also, because people like to express their
opinions with this genre, specifically young people.
This genre was born in the 50's. This new genre was born as a “counterculture movement”
of young people for young people, when the lyrics of the songs show all the things that they were
thinking but they could not say. Its influence begins with the sound, it is loud, its lyrics, its
messages and also with the help of its main instruments like guitar, drums and keyboards.
On the other hand, they are different artists of this genre who gave life to a new way of
expression and a peaceful protest. Some of them were, first, Elvis presley (1935-1977) "The King of
Rock and Roll".
He helps in the recognition and acceptation of the Black culture in United States, through
his music. Second, the Beatles (Decade of the 60’s) and with them "The Beatle-mania" was born.
A group conformed for their fans, also, their influenced in the hair style and clothes in this time, as
well as they inspired other movements, for example, "women's liberation", "gay liberation" and
topics about the care of environment. Third, in the beginning of the 90’s Grunge was born, a
young subculture, and with that it was born a new fashion, like ski hats than cost a lot. Bands like
Nirvana, promoted that.
These are topics that they (bands or artists) can show, for example during its concerts,
with its sound loud they show rebellion, other artists can
show peaceful protest, for example, this song of Michael
Jackson, "They do not care about us" who was other artist
than influence in this genre. Other artists can show their
songs with topics like peace and equality to everyone, for
example groups like U2 and the Beatles

"Beat me, hate me
You can never break me
Will me, thrill me
You can never kill me
Do me, Sue me
Everybody do me
Kick me, strike me
Don't you black or white me"
Through the rock, people express their feelings and thoughts with more freedom. The music is
able to transform the society, stay and change, break barriers and get to the heart; because Rock
is more than sounds!

Remember that everything changed
in the 80'S AND 90 this is our story
Here you can find your own style about old times so-called 80's and 90's that came
with new cultures and music. Do you remember?
You remember these crazy days make us cringe with embarrassment of the different styles.
You remember this style that reached the heavens with frizzy passion, or maybe ponytails, or
when you used hairspray. This was like to an explosion about being oneself.
In the 80's, hairstyles like long curly or French braids and also mullet for men was the hairstyle.
Moreover, the look of 80’s is quite particular, there were shims, big sweaters and brightly
colored hipster high, a lot of pads, shake and volume hair, very large accessories such as
belts, striped garments and leather jackets with shoulder pads.

Our journey through time has taken a most excellent turn! In the 90's these styles were
different, dyed with other colors and with high lights in the hair. It is more like blond hair, and also
90's clothing was very similar to the 80's clothes. Many trends were maintained for years.
However, gradually began to disappear, because people seek their own style and they wanted to
feel really good and be originals.
The fashion in the 90's was not characterized by a specific style, but it’d rather was defined as
an urge people to stamp their individuality through their clothes and with the contribution of
some musical trends.

In these years or epochs, that you maybe were an exciting time of cigars, Macarena but most of
all, they created a pop culture storm whose effects are yet very important. It’s a new generation
that we always remember but we believe we won’t use again. Don’t forget this I mean did a major
change in humanity!

THE ROCK’S INFLUENCES ON THE
80’S
The rock has been a big time in the development of the people; and we are still hearing
from classics songs to the evolution of genres that we hear today. But the most important of this
culture is to know about their ideologies and to know where their movements and ways of
thinking were born.
Rock’s ideologies were born from Marxism, I mean; its objective is to convert the society
and protest against the thinking of modern man. The first ages of the 80’s would bring tragic
events that marked the history of rock, like the death of John Lennon, Bob Marley and John
Bonham. These events marked a fall by the bands most important of 60’s and 70’s, and as
consequence it was born a lot of diversities of genres about rock like: heavy metal, punk, new
wave, dance pop and others.
The influence of these bands and the birth of Big Bands like Rolling Stones, The Doors,
Jimmy Hendrix, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Iron Maiden, occurred between the young people.
Their need of being like their favorites artists, like long hair, skinny pants, leather jacket, it meant a
symbol of rebellion and disorder, or it was the stereotype of how the people knew them.

ARGENTINE ROCK
The beginning of the Spanish rock
was in the late 50´s, when Mexican and
Spanish bands singing hits English. The first
hit in the Spanish rock was "La Bamba", one
of the regional Mexican songs interpreted by
Ritchie Valens in 1958. Then, another
Mexican singer, Danny Flores in 1958,
became the father of rock in Spanish. In
Argentina, the new genre finally exploded in
March 1955 when it was included the song
"Rock Around the Clock in the movie "Semilla
de Maldad". This article attempts to show
the history of some argentine bands and
their influence.
The Argentine rock began in the mid
50´s with the name of "Progressive Music"
and later "Country Rock 1" when the bands
started to sing songs with an important
content to youth of that time. The pioneers
were: Tanguito Luis Alberto Spinetta, leader
of Almendra, Miguel Abuelo, soloist and
leader of Los Abuelos de la Nada y Pappo.
Then, other bands came, Charly García,
soloist and leader of Sui Generis, La Máquina
de Hacer Pájaros y Serú Girán, Fito Páez,
Gustavo Cerati, Soda Stereo, Andrés
Calamaro, Miguel Mateos, among many
others.
One of these bands was Sui Generis,
this band was born from the union of youth
bands led by Charly Garcia (piano, acoustic
guitar and vocals) and Nito Mestre (flute,
acoustic guitar and vocals). Popularity and
fame came during the first half of the 70's.
They became one of the largest
groups of Argentine rock. Several of the
songs in this group talked about what was
happening in Argentina in the time of
military dictatorship. One the most famous
songs of this duo is "Rasguñas las piedras".
It's a hymn of the military dictatorship in
Argentina. It's the story of dead, missing and
detained people in secret, where they were
locked in cells separated by walls attached,
then the prisoners were scratching the wall
and the stones and if the other would
answer with the same sound, it meant he
was still alive, otherwise he was taken to be
tortured and killed. The group disbanded in
1975 due to major socio-political pressures
that existed in Argentina and the problems of
censoring their music, their last concert
attended by about thirty thousand people in
each role. Then in 1980 and 2001 they came
together
to give some concerts. Today, both artists continue their careers as soloists.
Page 12
12 http://issuu.com/englishclassskills3/docs/rock_it_all
The other important band was Soda
Stereo, one of the most influential and
important in Latin America to founded in
Buenos Aires in 1982 by Gustavo Cerati
(guitar and vocals), Héctor "Zeta" Bosio (bass
and vocals) y Carlos Alberto Ficicchia (Charly
Alberti, drums and percussion). His song "De
Música Ligera" was considered the second
best in the Spanish-American rock and fourth
best of all time, both the Latin rock, and the
Argentine rock, this song ("Música ligera")
was chosen to close their las concert in 1997
before their separation. Soda Stereo was the
first band to out of the local limits of their
country of origin and to be considered Latin
America as a unified culture language,
including the United States.
The rock in Spanish and Argentine
rock especially with many fans now have
more and more artists who dare to sing in
Spanish. The Argentine rock continues to be
a reflection of the reality of the country.
Andres Calamaro, Bersuit Vergarabat and
others are a good example of this. Today the
Argentine rock fused with other rhythms as
funk and tango very interesting presenting
alternatives for fans of this genre.

Do you like to know
about crazy bands
and glamorous
styles?
Here is the Glam Rock
Since several years ago, rock music has been
strongly marked in each generation and it
has been influenced as total revolution of
music with its great musical style. Just as
each day, past generations, older people and
young people go crazy for big groups which it
had been leave their mark and a great legacy
to the music’s history. The objective is that
you can know and recognize a new and good
style! Already that still survives in all genres
of music and this can be interesting for you.
Among many groups and genres were born
songs full fresh development called the Glam
Rock! It was born in Britain with the singers
Bod Dylan and David Bowie, who started the
innovation of the music but mostly with
aesthetic and appearance. First, they
rebelled and played with sexual ambiguity
and displaying a brazen and provocative
attitude. Second, they increased to wear
futuristic clothes with bright, platform boots,
hairstyles and make up. For example Bod
Dylan introduced glamorous style and
aesthetic leopard prints, the top hats,
feather boas and glitter.
The other characteristic, it was created by
the artist T. Rex, who included styles as
cabaret theatrics, Victorian literary, occult
mysticism, science fiction and mythology. It
manifested itself in outrageous clothes,
make up and showmanship. The Group
Duran Duran was other influential group with
great sound and a new image of innovation,
besides they showed videos around the
planet where they were riding a camel with
pyramids in the Taj Mahal or with sculptural
models. This aspect led to a better tendency.
In consequence of this change and
innovation, many bands emerged with the
new glamorous style. The most prominent
were Motley Crue, Dokken, Guns N Roses,
Bon Jovi, Cinderella twisted sister, Kiss and
Poison. Today a lot of bands don’t exist with
this style but their music is preserved in
some places of our country and by adult
people that vibrates with this genre.
However young people continue with this
style in all parts the world, because the Glam
Rock will never be forgotten and they will
continue in the minds of the people and new
bands appear glamorous as the band “The
cure”. So you must jump into the new world
of glam rock and the madness of the same.

Grunge, New
sound New
rock
The time passes, but the music remains
intact. Since 1991 when the music changed
radically and expanded to new things, it was
known as Grunge. It´s a genre inspired by
punk, and hard rock, and with essence of
indie rock. So, grunge was well known and it
was successful in the middle 90s, in this time
the grunge had a strong influence on young
people who follow the freedom and
independent spirit.
The names of Nirvana, Pearl Jam,
Mudhoney, Screaming Trees, Soundgarden
and Alice In Chains were not anonymous
anymore and became the biggest bands of
the era, and as a result the grunge, music left
a great discs and remembered for all eternity
as Nevermind by Nirvana, this is a classic of
music world; other as Badmotorfinger by
Soundgarden one of the most interesting
albums that rock has given us; following by
Dirt of Alice in Chains for lovers to heavy
rock, hard rock, very close to heavy metal
among many others that took grunge style to
make their own sounds.
The success of grunge was his tragedy at
the same time, the excesses generated by
the sudden fame and influence in the lives of
those protagonists that left an immense
tragedy that many people started to ask:
“This is what I want?” “Do I want that death
be a constant part of my life?” Because Kurt
Cobain, a singer of Nirvana, Layne Stanley of
Alice in chains, Andy Word of mother love
bone, all ones have their owns history about
suicide, abuse of drugs, so they were lost
souls in a word that enjoy with their music.
The best influence of Grunge for the
universal music was the claim of
independence and the art that they gave to
the music in that time, and a lot of bands had
a vision of the biggest objective, they said:
“Should always be honest musicians, desire
to create and identity of what you do
because no one can buy what our mind
creates.”

BENEFIT ROCK
CONCERTS
In the 70`s and 80`s was born a musical
genre the "ROCK", that changed world's
history. This was the youth's answer to social
situation in that time. Everybody knows that
rock is the most popular music in the world,
therefore each country has an important and
national band. Thats why great bands get
together in order to organize benefit
concerts to influence in social or politic
issues.
"Concert for Bangladesh" was the first event
done for a social cause, this was in 1791 and
in it participated artist like Ringo Star, Billy
Preston, Bod Dylan, Eric Clapton together
with others bands. After a few years the big
bands met to sing in a concert again, It was
to protest for the use of nuclear energy,
almost 200 000 people attended.
The most important benefit rock concert in
the 80`s it was named "Live Aid" the concerts
target was to raise funds for Ethiopian
famine. This concert was born when Bob
Geldof saw in a newspaper pictures or
millions of people starving to death in
Ethiopia, then he organized the event at the

The rock has been a very big musical
movement in the world, but besides of
song’s lyrics also rock has let people join to
help in big social causes like AIDS, famine,
social injustice and others. Therefore when
you listen to a rock song, you can think about
the relation between the humanity and the
rock. LONG LIFE ROCK.
