Materials

Road Base

Queensland Department of Main Roads has a specification structure which is arrived at after a setof tests. These tests are comprised of a range of requirements including rates of expansion/movement, water absorption, mechanical strength and compaction. There are three products commonly supplied which comply with these standards. They are Main Road Dept (MRD)2.5, 2.3, and 2.1. The common aggregate size is 26.5mm minus and this is shown as MRD 2.5c, 2.3c, and 2.1c.

Commonly, road building materials are classified by a CBR (California Bearing Ratio). This is a penetration test to evaluate the mechanical strength of road sub-grades and base courses. This measurement was developed by the California Department of Transport and is now a common form of rating Road Base material. Basically, the higher the CBR rating, the harder the surface. Asan example, Top Soil has a CBR rating of 5, moist sand is around CBR10, where a high quality crushed rock (Blue Metal) has a CBR rating well above CBR80.

The higher the CBR rating, the less movement or compaction when vehicles are driven over the roadway, so higher rated material will require less thickness to produce a stable and strong road surface. Queensland Transport require minor roads to have a minimum thickness of 200mm for light vehicle use, comprising of a sub base minimum of CBR35 (100mm) and a base minimum of CBR60 (100mm).

The Main Road Specifications include the CBR rating along with several other requirements. This means that a MRD2.5c product will out-perform a product which only has a CBR15 rating, even though MRD2.5c has the same CBR qualification.

Rock Hammer EarthmovingExpectations of Rock Hammer Representatives

When on site you are representing Rock Hammer Earthmoving and/or the company we are representing. Your actions reflect on all of us. The attitude of “couldn’t care less about this customer, I will get work elsewhere tomorrow” will not be tolerated. You are expected to treat every customer as if they are our only customer.

All dealings with clients are to be handled professionally at all times. If you find yourself “starting to lose it” take a breath, walk away and give Harley or Rochelle a call to bring them up to speed. We can’t tolerate anyone threatening or “losing it” with any other person on-site. You have to be the bigger person and walk away before anything escalates.

Always tackle a job as you would for yourself. The market is extremely competitive. “Milking a job” or “stretching it out” will cost us customers and ruin our reputation.

A 7am start means that you are ready to work at 7am.

If you are not able to get to site on time for whatever reason, make sure Harley, the company youare working for and, where appropriate the customer is aware.

When on the clock, keep your mobile phone usage to an absolute minimum.

Always make sure you know where you are tipping any material removed from site before leavingsite and check with the client on-site to make sure they’re happy with the tip choice. “Parking up”on your way to or from the tip is stealing from the client and will not be tolerated.

On rainy days, ring Harley to check the job is on before leaving home.

NEVER alter a job docket after it has been signed by the client. If you notice that you’ve made a mistake, cross out the docket, do up a new one and get the client to sign the new one. If you notice the mistake after you leave site, let Rochelle know the docket number and customer then explain the mistake.

While our customers may not expect you to help on-site, if you can, please do. Simple things like cleaning the road or driveway, helping with levels, dust control or picking up rubbish on-site are noticed by customers. These little things differentiate us and help us get more work.

PPE, including long pants and long sleeves, are a requirement on many jobs. Make sure you have a set with you.

Safe Work Methods Statements (SWMS)

The Rock Hammer SWMS cover high risk construction work that:

• is carried out on, in or adjacent to a road, railway, shipping lane or other traffic corridor that is in use by traffic other than pedestrians

• is carried out in an area at a workplace in which there is any movement of powered mobileplant

All Rock Hammer representatives will be required to sign the SWMS register acknowledging their familiarity with these SWMS.

When on a Rock Hammer job, using a Rock Hammer docket, if asked to show the principal contractor a copy of the SWMS, show them the Rock Hammer SWMS that applies to the work you are to do. If they ask a copy, ask for an email address so a copy can be sent to them. Let Harley or Rochelle know that we need to send them a SWMS.

When working on a job where subcontracting for someone else, such as Mitchelmore or Eagle Alliance, their SWMS would be used and should have been supplied to the principal contractor in advance. If not, call the appropriate office for advice. Do not use the Rock Hammer SWMS for these jobs.

If you believe that any of the SWMS should be changed or improved, please contact Harley or Rochelle with your suggestion.

Tips & Tricks

Mitchelmore

Mitchelmore trucks usually run on CH 26.

Hanson

When working for Hanson, call the allocators before arriving at the quarry for your first load and after delivering each load to confirm your next load. This will save you driving back to the quarry to find out there are no more loads.

Hanson tippers usually run on CH 10 on the north side and CH 11 on the south side.

Always use your Hanson fleet number when using a Hanson quarry.

Tipping

When tipping material larger than 300mm diameter swing the tailgate, if possible so the load doesn't get stuck or damaging the tailgate.

When tipping material larger than 300mm diameter or green waste, where possible, drive forwarduntil you are clear of the tipped material before lowering the bin. The bin will give the back of the truck some protection and reduce any damage done if material falls toward the truck.

When tipping mulch or green waste, swing the tailgate so the load does not get stuck.

If your bin will not lower, normally this is because you are not on level ground, drive forward and tap the brakes, you might need to do this a few times. Once you are on level ground it should lower all the way.

Never drive further than necessary with the bin up.

If material is stuck in the bin, do not try and shift it by racing forward and hitting the brakes with the bin up. Try slamming the tailgate, if possible or drop the bin and try moving it manually.

When tipping onto a stockpile do not back right up to it because as you tip you will drive the tailgate into the pile. Repeatedly doing this will twist the tailgate hinge.

Loading

If asked to load dry sand, ask if they can give you some bags and tape to seal the inside of the tailgate or the sand will run out the gaps.

Never move the vehicle once loading has started unless directed to do so.

Always ask for slightly less material than a maximum load if the loader is cold. The scales can take a while to warm up and you might get overloaded.

If you are overloaded and need to tip off quite a bit of material, ask if you can tip it all off on the stockpile and try again.

Whenever possible, tarp the load.

Page 18

Page 20: Rock hammer Earthmoving

Rock Hammer EarthmovingGeneral

When in doubt about if travel should be charged on an hourly hire job, check with the company that we are working through. If you are not able to confirm travel put 1hr travel on your docket.

When collecting product for a Rock Hammer job from a supplier and the Mitchelmore account is used, you need to fill out two dockets. A Rock Hammer docket with all of the normal details that will go to the customer. And a Mitchelmore docket using the Rock Hammer docket number as the order number and Rock Hammer as the customer. Don't fill in the delivery address on the Mitchelmore docket.

If you need to purchase product for a delivery using a credit card, call Harley or Rochelle.

If you need consumables such as grease, oil, rags, cleaning products, straps etc. you should find some at the yard. If not contact Harley.

If you have an accident, follow the accident guide in this folder.

If your vehicle / machine is damaged by someone else, inform the client, Harley and follow the accident guide in the truck.

If you damage something on site, inform the client and Harley.

You are better off taking your time than rushing and breaking something.

Use the correct tool or attachment for the job.

The Yard

We share the yard with Grayson Haulage. Most of the Rock Hammer supplies are in the container. Most of the items at the shed are the property of Grayson Haulage, if you are not sure, ask someone if you can use it.

• Do not litter the yard use a bin

• If you use something put it back where you got it

• If you break something tell Harley

• If you use the last of something tell Harley

• Do not leave vehicles in the middle of the yard or on driveways

• Do not tip material off in the yard without checking with Harley

Driving

In the MAN trucks:

• Do not use DM or RM unless you really need to. They are only to be used when unloaded and you are doing slow, tight manoeuvring. What happens in the background is that they both slip the clutch, so if overused, the clutch gets burned out.

• DX in the TGM trucks is to be used off road. It holds each gear longer and typically shifts up one gear at a time.

• When driving through undulating country, especially when loaded, it can be best to use manual mode to hold/shift through the gears.

In the Mercedes Benz:

• Pre-select the action you wish to perform before pushing the clutch. For example, to shift up, push the lever forward and then when you are ready to change gear push the clutch. Wait for the click and release it. Same to down shift pull the lever back, push the clutch when ready, wait for the click and release. Do not push the clutch then try and shift gears.

• Do not use the splitter paddle to change through multiple splits. Like the main lever pull up or push down once on the paddle to preselect a split, then push the clutch, wait for the click and release. If you need to move through multiple gears use the main lever.

• To drive, push the main lever forward, the gear will preselect, then clutch, click, release.

• For neutral, push both buttons on each side of the main lever at the same time.

Dockets should be placed in the box on the container in the yard or at the Woolloongabba office regularly.

Check the following on weighbridge / tip dockets to make sure they are correct:
