Wood Energy component

…encourages the use of wood cut-offs and waste from the wood chain. A reduction in the use of fossil fuels,… will invigorate the economy and stimulate technological innovation.

Planned results:

Consumers will receive information on wood fuel Increased sales of wood as a fuel source New suppliers of innovative technology in the area Politicians and SMEs are aware of biomass

Still to be done from 1st half year :

Reports have to be submitted to Brandenburg (including the information using the set up indicators, a detailed list of stakeholders and quantitative indications of wood fuel sales and forest owners engaged from 2003).

Brandenburg will comment on the results and ask for additional information to get a consistent picture.

After final transfer of information Brandenburg will edit a report on the situation of wood fuel in 6 European regions (as a basis for the conference).

Documentation on Technology and Fuel Quality (1)

Every partner should give a description on typical production methods of wood fuel from first thinning, final cutting, wood processing and waste wood production including technological and economical parameters.

Every partner will describe typical installations for private homes, public buildings and SMEs using technical and economical descriptions on heat demand, fuel supply, storage, feeding, furnace, emission control, control, ash disposal, building envelope.

specific

Page 21: Robinwood Component 4 Promotion of Energy from Local Wood Dr. Georg Wagener-Lohse, CEBra Cottbus challenging.

Documentation on Technology and Fuel Quality (2)

Every partner will describe typical installations for electricity production (small or large scale) including constraints of the energy market where it has to compete with.

Every partner will give information on technology providers and R&D institutions in his country that work on the improvement of one or the other technology step.

Please give information as well on quality parameters and quality control that are being used in trading wood fuel with regard to production and combustion technology.

Regional Basis for the Public Call Murcia is heading to find access to late develop-

ments in the value generation from natural resources and bioenergy development.

Liguria has started with the implementation of its forestry and environmental plans to develop an energy market for regional forestry products.

Wales has got some experience in wood fuelled municipal applications and is on the verge to step from pioneer applications to early adaptors.

Brandenburg has some experiences in heat and power production in big and small enterprises and heating networks and would like to make wood energy a real market.

specific

Page 24: Robinwood Component 4 Promotion of Energy from Local Wood Dr. Georg Wagener-Lohse, CEBra Cottbus challenging.

Rational based initiatives to enlarge the sales of wood fuel should be taken according to the partners on

(1) getting access to forest owners to make use of the wood fuel potential from first thinning and final cutting for both heat and electricity production,

(2) offering technical and economical information on production methods (cutting, chipping, drying),

(3) getting customers like municipalities, SMEs or real estate owners involved in asking for bioenergy as their favourite technological innovation,

(4) making use of latest developments in combustion, gasification and combined heat and power production.

detailed

Page 25: Robinwood Component 4 Promotion of Energy from Local Wood Dr. Georg Wagener-Lohse, CEBra Cottbus challenging.

Initiatives should put emphasis on

(5) assuring the right fuel quality to each specific conversion technology,

(6) giving advise on suitable grant schemes to put public initiative on technological development and market uptake,

(7) comparing state of the art of investment and fuel costs with regard to technological achievements,

(8) supporting the development of new businesses aside classical installers or fuel producers,

(9) to overcome missing knowledge on all levels of the value chain and strengthen the regions political commitment on rural development.
